These are great guitars. As much as I love the simplicity and looks of an SG Junior, these SG Specials are a no brainer for anyone into P-90's. That neck pickup is so creamy and sweet. I can't imagine not having it.
I just got back from Nashville. Went to Gibson Garage. Had a list of guitars I wanted to try. What did I walk out with? A vintage cherry SG Special. It was the one that spoke to me. Ultra light weight and perfectly made. You can tell those Garage guitars are top notch. In my opinion, for the money (and a hard shell case to boot) this is the best value Gibson has right now. Especially in an SG.
@@leadstrat Nice! Congrats! I've been looking for one of the pelham blue Specials they discontinued. Did they have any exclusive finishes in the Special at the Garage? Was planning s trip to Nashville myself this summer.
@@Darth.ShredderI did not see any special colors in the SG. I was interested in a TV yellow LP Special but they didn’t have one that didn’t cost a million dollars (they had a Murphy lab one). They did have a nice selection. All of them are locked on a Hercules hook, so it’s not the most “accessible” guitar shop, but the guy there was very helpful and brought me about 10 guitars with no attitude. You might want to consider bringing a yellow Hercules key…😂. And they will not discount, but as I said before, they’re the best from the factory.
Def go to Gruhn Guitars. They encourage you to play any one you want and will remind you they will not be standing over you or harassing you. Kind of wish I bought from them, but we already had the Special wrapped up and Gruhn didn’t have one. Hope you enjoy it out there.

I have the Gibson SG 61 and the Gibson SG Special P90 Ebony the same exact as in the video… both sound amazing, but those P90 are magical… the Special is ma favourite… There’s something about those P90 sound… add a bit of distortion and enjoy! And on top of that, the Special is cheaper 😍 I highly recommend it

Pardon my colloquial expression but "Holy Shit" that is some monster tone on that guitar. I thought that the P90s were not that good with overdrive/grain. I have the '61 SG Standard Re-issue in Red and I think it's a killer guitar. I am debating on whether to get this. Thank you for posting this.
The best part about P90's is that they're hotter yet more dynamic than a classic PAF type humbucker. Clean to mean with the volume rolled back and forth.

Something about these guitars. That nasty bark from the neck pup unlike any other neck pick up sound out there.
Hells yeah, its my only guitar where I like the neck pickup better than the bridge. Not that I don't like the bridge PU, its just usually the other way around.
Has anyone done comparison video. Of the SG Special vs Am. Pro. II Telecaster?
Great guitar thats easy to obsess upon in a good way! I own one....only issue is its awful to play standing up (neck dive, leans forward). Sadly that makes it a very poor choice for gigs. Ugh! Still I love the guitar and play it at home and record with it regularly as it sounds and plays so good sitting down!
If you like that sg special kind of sound but without all those flaws that you ve mentioned, check out the Firebird studio 2018. Same woods, electronics, p90s and all, except in a more elongated body shape. It has a different balance and the neck dive isnt that bad. The only difference is the bridge - tuneomatic instead of the wrap around
Get a better strap ,one made of leather. I own 3 sg's including the special in red and I never had one dive yet.

Who owns one? Be completely honest is it worth $1600? With the cheesy vintage style tuners and simple wraparound bridge does $1600 feel justified still?
Shame that Gibson hates fun and had to discontinue the fun colours, still sounds good I guess but still…
It’s probably more about manufacturing a product they’re confident people will want to buy.
Those colors don’t sell well
The shell pink sgs are popular.
'fun colors' but we have a special with a wraparound and it isn't a crazy expensive VOS custom and you're upset it doesn't come in pink.
I didnt like the crazy colors personally but i definitely wish they didnt get rid of them, gibson’s biggest problem other than qc is lack of options.
If you were making a living as a guitarist,it wouldnt care about the neck. Thanks to medicare I can afford both. It is purely subjective. At high volume, I would bet my 81 les paul custom you couldnt tell the difference.l am old enough to remember when the sg was called a les paul. I love both.never had neck dive .In 2020 l purchased a sg. I found the neck seemed a hair thicker which I like. I chose the new one.
It would not matter to me enough to count.. I. Dont believe someone can tell the difference.would like to put them on a meter,then ask,hear the difference? I bet they would pick it for cosmetic features,its human nature. They would not be able to tell the difference if they were blindfolded. However the feel of the neck is different. I have had seven sg models due to theft. In the seventies l played through two marshall 200 watt stacks for rock festivals. In the eighties used two twin reverbs hooked up parallel. In the nineties a couple of sessions from England. Retired from any stage work in 2012. The sg and a les paul gave me a nice life in music . We all know that being a pro opens your life up to many possiblle problems . Only serious musicians survive.
