As a South African, who has to pay a ton of money, fill out a ton of forms AND do an in-person interview when wanting to travel to Europe, this new online, cheap registration is nothing. Believe me, its not a big deal!
I did know that people from South Africa sofer more scrutiny!
You guys don't even have much of an electric grid there lol
@johnnysakura stop speaking nonsense of what you don't know

No surprise
The same thing was obligatory for EVERYONE travelling to the US in the last 20+ years...
electronic registration, which costs 14$
Now Europe is asking the same thing
Used to be 14. Recently raised to USD 21. I guess inflation is also affecting ESTA.
ESTA ( the US version of this) isn't quite 20 years old yet (introduced 2009/10) but the US visa-waiver program is much older. Before ESTA was introduced it was something you had to do on the plane coming, fill in one of those infamous green forms asking you whether you are a war criminal or a drug trader :)
Sounds like a new revenue scam. The fact that you said the US has been doing it first confirms it.
people going on these trips with credit card debt
I love when American are given a taste of their own medicine. They always treat people from.other country a way, but don't expect to be treated the same lol. Great
The US can command such a fee because it is the best country in the world. Europe on the other hand is far from it lol.
1. It's not a visa. It's a pre-registration, with almost instant approval online.
2. Europeans have had to do this to enter the US, for years now.
Except you might have to wait 30 days. Many will probably. So it’s really 30 days advance permission.
@@damnjustassignmeone What makes you think that? For the fast majority of Americans the approval will be instant. Unless you have some criminal convictions.....
@@Hupjeflupjeor if you're name gets confused with a criminal
I assume instante approval if the person qualifies to travel to Europe.
Europeans have to do the exact same thing when traveling to visit America. It’s not a big deal.
Except we been protecting them post ww2; without our military budget and might, you could imagine how well their Euro zone and their currency might be worth today. Their economic stability ride on back of US military.
Funny, South and Central Americans and Mexicans just come over and stay. And if we want to check them first we are called racists.
@@Steven-xf8mzThat's nice but it has nothing to do with territory security specific to each area - History doesn't change that: 9-11 happened on US soil and yet travel was globally affected. It's useless to apply an outdated hegemonic mindset. If the American government thinks it's owned something they can put tariffs and travel restrictions in place but in a global economy, only a few don't realize it's benefitting no one, except one's misplaced sense of pride.
That's correct, there's always been a bigger burden (including financial) for non-nationals, and even US lawful permanent residents to enter the US than for US travelers to go to abroad.
30 days? No. Anyhow, we should respond in kind. Europeans want 30 day’s advance permission? Then they can wait 30 days before entering the U.S.

UK is also launching its own ETA this Nov but I think it’s rolling out the programme country by country until 2025. US citizens probably won’t need one till then.
And some europeans have to pay 160$ + other taxes and go through a visa interview just to visit US

US, Canada and Australia all have pretty much the same system for years so it’s not a big deal the EU is doing this. It’s just for screening out what they consider potential “trouble makers”.
That would be reasonable if America had been harboring terrorists that travel to Europe and try to destroy the Eiffel tower, Louvre, Vatican City, etc.
No it's to make more money.
@philho.youtube Truth!!! It has absolutely nothing to do with anything except money. If EU countries were enforcing their borders, then the original comment would have made sense. The US is guilty of this, too. Just money grabs.
They literally ask for a small fee. If it was purely procedural why are we paying for our own documents?

Big deal.
Us EU nationals have had to apply and pay for ESTA to enter the US for years (even though my daughters are US citizens).
For my most recent Us trip (April this year) ESTA had gone up from 14 to 21 USD. So 7EUR fee is cheap. Should be at least double that.
I'm worry more about interconnecting flight on airport. Is it really US passport holder mandated to apply their EU(Schengen Visa)?
This is to reduce lines and waiting. I am sure the long queues were causing havoc to Airport security at European Airports. I think if they did something better than force people to use it. I bet if they said for 8 US dollars you can sign up at this website to pre enter your passport and travel information ahead of time you can skip the long lines. Everyone hates waiting in line. They would gladly pay 8 dollars and fill out an online form to do so.
> This is to reduce lines and waiting
That's happening gradually already. More and more European countries allow US citizen to us their e-gates for immigration. Usually takes only minutes.
In Egypt, just pay $35 cash at the immigration counter, you get a receipt glue to your passport, you walk out of the air port 😅
Even with this you'll still have to line up for customs. Unless they intend to use facial recognition
@@highlyfavored2434 That's a different thing but that's actually also already possible for US-citizens at some European airports. Local citizens generally can use e-gates at immigration when they have biometric e-passports.

finally some justice
no it’s bureacracy
So basically, Americans are getting finally treated the way they treat others.
Gonna see a lot of angry customers at airports. This is really dumb.
And yet we Europeans have been accepting this when visiting the US without making a fuss. We just accept that that's the rule and then enjoy ourselves. It really is no big deal!
This is Schengen not Europe. So it doesn't apply to Ireland for example.
People have to jump through more hoops to visit the US.
It's a bit hypocritical for Americans to be upset since all EU citizens need a green card waiver, which costs around $6, to enter the US.
This is pretty much exactly the same thing.
You can't get upset at something your own country does.
I wasn't old enough to vote when that rule was passed
It’s bureacracy, ideally the US should remove this fee itself instead of the EU imposing its own form. as an individual i didn’t preach nor create the fee for EU citizens to come to the US
The real upsetting factor is that illegal migrants need no visa to enter Europe. They just enter and stay. So, its ridiculous to demand visas from people entering legally when illegal migrants are tolerated.
Only fair to reciprocate
"Next year" is pretty vague.
It is, and it might not even happen.

A billion travelers translate to 7-billion Euros of extra revenue.
@kevinw10 So t's not a billion travelers:
It's 1.4 billion people living in the 60 countries that can potentially use am ETIAS authorization to enter EU/Schengen-Zone for tourism. There were 168m non-EU arrivals into the EU in 2018, most of these from other European countries, only 30m from the US. Many of these would require a classical visa to enter. So let's be optimistic and say 100m per year with ETIAS, many of these repeat visitors, so if this brings in 400m a year that would be plenty.
I doubt that this will cover the cost of the system, considering it includes ideas about setting up electronic immigration gates at a large number of airports and all sort of connected IT systems/databases that have to be maintained and staffed.
Exactly 💯
I can imagine how Africans will be treated!! I was racially profiled in Dubai on my way to Canada. Those people think black people cant or should not travel
I was racially profiled in Dubai as well. And I saw several other blacks that were profiled along with myself
Only Mauritius and the Seychelles enjoy visa-free travel to EU/Schengen countries today. So nothing will change for the bulk of African countries, visitors will need a Schengen visa now and in the future also.

The month is for when you get rejected, still want to go, and even extra documents won't convince them to let you in.

🤔🤷🏻♀️ sounds like one of the main reasons is to increase a new tax a new burden on the citizens and subjects
~8 USD and valid for 3 years is some tax burden. That probably doesn't even cover the cost of the ETIAS system. The equivalent US system (ESTA) costs you 21 USD for 2 years, so is roughly 4 times as expensive for regular travelers.
Well America has charged Europeans who travel to the States for years, don’t see what the big deal is…..

I suppose that might be one of the reason why the introduction date of the EU ETIAS system has been pushed back multiple times already.
Even if you are going for a week
Would I need to fill one out if I have a layover in Europe?
yes
That depends on the airport but probably not.
Most or possibly even all European airports that would have flights to the US will have international transfer zones where you do not go through immigration into that country when you connect to another international flight.
E.g. direct NYC->Frankfurt connecting to direct Frankfurt->Delhi, no need for ETIAS.
Finally and the fee should be at least €20 👍
'extra layer of security'? how?
@johns6177 You won't be able to get on a flight to EU/Schengen when their databases flag your passport connected to things they don't like. Same as the US, Canada, Australia and some other places already do.
Think police, terrorism and immigration related databases.
Thanks for the update but you forgot to mention what month in 2024 this will start? 🙏🇺🇸
They haven't set an exact date yet, and judging by how often this has been pushed back already, I would be surprised if the start date pushed back once more.
ETIAS is meant to act as a pre-travel screening, to deny those that pose a security threat, or a risk in terms of irregular migration or public health.
Of course if a migrant comes over on a boat from Africa and lands in Italy there's no fee. If the migrant has no documents because he's destroyed them he still gets to stay. If the authorities find he's a security threat he still gets to stay in Europe and is financially supported by one of the European states because he's an illegal migrant.
Ahh ohh well. Who wants to travel to Europe anyways.🤔
Me.
……Those of us NOT living in the “Flyover states”. 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
@@eddieg6436You mean the states more people are moving out of? Makes sense.
Bet you don't own a US passport.
@@Allaiya. YOU and all your minimum wage family that can't afford a blue state can move to them red states... THEY NEED PEASANTS!
I see this affecting Americans and the United Kingdom post brexit
And all the other non-EU countries Americans don't know exist
Foreign travel? Just getting a US Passport now takes 5-7 months!!
So we basically need to buy $7 to enter EU? Just a fancy name to collect/ "process" the data🧐🤨🤔
Yes... prevents and discourages MAGA GRIFTERS who live off others.
well we as in europeans need to pay 14 E for esta and much more for visa to enter US. fair for you guys to do the same
The rest of the world pays approx 20 USD for the visa to enter the USA. And this since at least 20 years. So Europe is actually quite kind to only ask for 7 USD for a visa for Americans to enter Europe.
EU and the rest of the world also receives free American protection that kept commies and slant eyes out
More control as per usual
If this prevents entitled kids from doing sht to ancient sites or canals or anywhere... I doubt it, but cool that they have to pay a bit of what we have to pay ^^
USA has this too
Wont stop me from going
Nothing wrong with this each country should have some sort of vetting. I don’t mind the extra security.
Screw other countries...I'll keep traveling in my beautiful country and keep my money spent here...
Yay!
people complain about 30 day wait but who plans for a trip overseas with plane tickets such a short time in advance lol? We started planning for our US trip from Europe 6 months ahead of time.
No big deal.
Should have been done years ago. Borders too porous.
I love to travel without thinking that I have to apply for permission. This will stop a lot US citizens to travel to Europe including me. No more fun😅
@noratruong7816
> This will stop a lot US citizens to travel to Europe including me.
It didn't stop foreign tourists coming to the US, when the US gov introduced similar requirements in 2009/2010 for all the countries that had enjoyed visa-travel to the US before.
We'll see.
I wonder if this will be the same for Canadians!
Yes it will be the same for Canadians
Can't travel to Europe without a passport. How's that backlog going?
So this is americans answer on esta
