Currently looking for that one specific radio jingle used for the Oakland show of Pink Floyd on May 9th, 1977 during the intermission into “Wish You Were Here”
KYA's ownership at some point should've broken down and invested money in moving the transmitter to a far more conducive location like somewhere along the shore of the bay. That's what NBC did for KPO (Belmont) and ABC did for KGO (east end of the Dumbarton). The KLX/KEWB/KNEW transmitter was along the waterfront in Richmond. KRE's was in the Aquatic Park in Berkeley. KSFO on Islais Creek. KLS/KWBR/KDIA, KSAY/KIQI, and KROW/KABL's transmitter site was next to the Bay Bridge toll plaza. KYA would've doubtless had a far stronger signal than they did at the top of that hill. I wonder whose idea it was to put KYA's transmitter there in 1937 when William Randolph Hearst owned it. Whoever it was, they had no concept of AM signal propagation and I doubt Mr. Hearst would've allowed the move had he known. But he was a newspaper publisher, not a broadcast engineer.
All I heard is that the owner wanted the tower on the hill because he liked how it looked. What's worse, when the tower blew down in a 116mph wind storm, they put another tower at the same location. They should have left it there for FM and put the AM tower by the water.
@@RadioAirchecks I couldn't agree more, Tom...in fact, I consider you an authority on KYA. I'm wondering if some of these cuts were recorded in the 50s before the Bartells bought the station. What are your thoughts on that? When did the tower blow down? Never heard about that one.
