The lack of new stardom in hiphop is a great reason to check out your local HipHop music scene. They need the support to develop and take that top spot if you don't want some industry plant to push garbage to the masses. Once you break the surface, you start to find real people creating real art that you crave.
Ghost writers, producers not being paid or credited, upcoming getting a fraction of a penny for streaming and everybody overexposed. Why would anyone want to be the next wave under these conditions? You have to hit the top immediately and remain there forever to get paid or find a sucker that'll pay you today cause the industry not doing it no time soon and we know it from all the testimonials of the next up wave that died off from the current wave scamming them. Hip-Hop also isn't fun because the top can be petty enough to make you stop rising under the guise of I'll put you on and then make you remove all of your current albums with a following and then say I saw that tweet from 7 years ago, you work for me and you won't ever drop another album without my approval.

Kanye lost all merit as a rapper for me when it was exposed that he doesn’t write his songs. He’s an excelente producer one of the bests and when he raps he is a flow master but I can’t regard him as a rapper. Rappers write their own songs.
I thought Cole too but then I realize he's not as critically acclaimed as Kendrick, his albums aren't "classics" and 2024 has just not been a good year for him. I mean for rock music it’s a blessing and a curse. It’s a good thing that the music will last for generations but it’s not healthy for the genre to have 20+ year old bands headlining the biggest rock festivals whilst legacy acts refuse to retire. Younger bands need the torch passed down to them and they need to create new subcultures and forward thinking projects. They need to do something that’s dangerous and risky instead of appealing to nostalgia.

As someone who was more into Rock growing up, I've seen this trend before. Rap has been the most expansive and inventive genre of popular music for most of the 2010s and beyond, same as Rock was during the big 70s prog era. Rock was also known as a young man's game, with a lot of 50s and 60s artists retiring in their 30s, or fading from the charts, but the 70s group didn't fade anymore. They adapted to the 80s, shifting to popular synth pop, going into glam metal, or digging deeper in their own style, while still growing their audience. Then they became dad rockers that toured till someone died since the 90s, because they built an audience that matured with them, and followed them. Hip-Hop is looking to develop the same way, as the current rappers can keep on making music into their 60s, since that's what their audience wants. The caveat is that "Rock" in it's 60s-70s "pure form" doesn't exist anymore in popular music. Alt rock is coming back again, but that's mixed with metal, rap, electronic music... you get the idea. Rap will also evolve away from what "pure rap" viewers expect and will be rejected by them.

I appreciate how gracefully Andre 3000 stepped away from rap because he knew he was past his best days. While he's always gonna be one of the greatest emcees of all-time, his self-awareness is a breath of fresh air within a genre where some of these guys inching close to retirement are still rapping about immature things.

What you’re not grasping is that those artists get no streams and that’s what solidifies a genre of music’s mainstream success. No shit there are great rappers but if no one knows they exist it’s irrelevant. And if only mid rappers go mainstream with the occasional exception this will spell the death of a genre.

Been saying this forEVER. Any other genre will have musicians come in at any age and be great. The issue with Hip-Hop though is that the industry has manipulated it to be a 'trend' and most rappers either die or fizzle out 25-27 if they're lucky to make it that far. We're just now getting to a period were people want to hear things at different ages. The younger portion of Gen Z is the start of this open mindset. They can listen to art and wisdom at any age. Early Gen Z couldn't do that. Millennials couldn't, Gen X, etc.
This is why I hate how popular trap & mumble rap became. It sparked a generation of rappers that relied entirely on their beats carrying them. Now that those beats aren't banging anymore we see them for the talentless hacks they are. Thus we remain in our comfort zone of established artists because the industry has lost the ability to discover and develop new artists, & instead subjects us to whoever's trending on tiktok that particular week.
Hip Hop has a TALENT problem. This isn’t even a debatable subject if you compare the skill of old rappers and the new crop. It isn’t an old head problem…it’s a new talent problem. And using Soulja Boy and 3k (who’s supremely talented but don’t wanna rap) really doesn’t drive you point home. Drake, Cole, and Dot were the last true hip hop superstars. None of the new artists have stepped up to create new timeless music
I just think rap fans are aging. And older fans still want to hear rap from their favorite artists. In the 90s and 2000s most rap fans were young. That has changed. Almost every age demographic likes rap now.

Hip Hop / Rap Music is a relatively new genre with unique problems. I feel blessed and fortunate enough to see first hand history in the make right now as we speak
All the new generation rappers that we thought were going to come along to replace the current generation either died or fell off tremendously. The ones that are left got rich and got lazy and you can hear it in their formulaic music. Rappers from way back in the day weren't really retiring gracefully, they were being pushed out of relevance by the new and better rappers that were just out performing and out selling them. In the current generation of rap, the rappers that are pushing 40 are the one's selling the most, still breaking records to this day and have the best selling tours. Why would they retire when they've entered into an infinite money glitch because nobody from the new generation is good enough or hungry enough to take the spotlight from them? On top of that even if someone tried their best to take the spotlight, these guys (the big 3) are still out rapping 95% of the new generation so who tf is even good enough to take the spot?

All great points in your video. I'd also say, for decades the hip hop superstar always had a protégé or a certain neighborhood would work together before they blow up. Now these kids put music on soundcloud, get a distribution deal, a bunch of features and put out a trash album then disappear. If they still came up under Ogs then they would have time to learn and slowly make a name for themselves. Dre did it for Snoop, Puff did it for BIG and Mase, Tribe did it for Busta rhymes, Wayne did it for nicki and Drake etc...
Other music like rock country or reggae allow artists to continue doing music at old ages. But hip hop which is the youngest genre that JUST turned 50 seem to have a problem with older artists.
I would say one of the major reasons for this is probably oversaturation rather than just the fact that there's no one to take replace the greats. There are some really good rappers out there who are young and release fire music but due to all the noise we never really hear them. Coupled with the fact that our current greats not retiring plus all the ridiculous glazers out there who will never acknowledge when something new is better than one of the big 3
Its the ambition that has been lost. People are content to just enjoy the music rather than make it. The industry is less aggressive and the newcomers are struggling more because hip hop was kinda supposed to be underground but especially nowadays with how popular it is, people just don't have the ambition and drive to replace the big names
Feel like we were robbed of seeing these new dominant stars spring up and transform the genre ever since Juice and X died, they were supposed to be the next big rappers but tragedy struck.

The older gen was built on a solid foundation of quality over quantity and today's artist are too overexposed to the point of burnout and that's not even talking about beef. Watching this, I think we are fortunate to see the maturity and progression of hip hop. Those young dudes are going to keep coming up and there's a generation after Drake, Kenny, & Cole already putting in work. We got dudes like Denzel Curry, JID, Joey Badass keeping hip hop alive too. Then you got dudes like Kenny Mason, Tyler the Creator, & Smino pushing the traditional boundaries of the genre bleeding into RnB, punk, & pop in ways that is keeping the sound fresh. You have people in their late 20s early 30s being the center of the sound and up & comers finding their sound based on them. Rap does not have to equate to youth even though the culture is rooted in the spirit of being young, energetic, and rebellious. As a 28 year old, I want to grow and mature with the music I love & the past 15 years of being a hip hop head have let me do that.
It’s so crazy how long the current big 3 have been held up to that regard without a single one looking to have a solid runner up. It would be much more accurate to say we have a problem with lazy dum-dums of all ages trying to correlate making good music with age/gender/orientation/skin color/etc instead of effort, (how many rappers even play any instrument or know anything about reading/writing sheet music AT ALL?) natural talent, work ethic, heart, and putting the music before a paycheck.
This isn’t just a hip-hop problem but mainstream music as a whole, the artists on top are the ones who came out before the streaming era, it’s way harder to have that superstar allure and build that unbreakable mega fanbase in the social media/streaming era which is why none of these newer acts are as big and will likely never be as big as their mentors. As someone who was more into Rock growing up, I've seen this trend before.
Rap has been the most expansive and inventive genre of popular music for most of the 2010s and beyond, same as Rock was during the big 70s prog era. Rock was also known as a young man's game, with a lot of 50s and 60s artists retiring in their 30s, or fading from the charts, but the 70s group didn't fade anymore. They adapted to the 80s, shifting to popular synth pop, going into glam metal, or digging deeper in their own style, while still growing their audience. Then they became dad rockers that toured till someone died since the 90s, because they built an audience that matured with them, and followed them.
Hip-Hop is looking to develop the same way, as the current rappers can keep on making music into their 60s, since that's what their audience wants.
The caveat is that "Rock" in it's 60s-70s "pure form" doesn't exist anymore in popular music. Alt rock is coming back again, but that's mixed with metal, rap, electronic music... you get the idea. Rap will also evolve away from what "pure rap" viewers expect and will be rejected by them.

Been saying this forEVER. Any other genre will have musicians come in at any age and be great. The issue with Hip-Hop though is that the industry has manipulated it to be a 'trend' and most rappers either die or fizzle out 25-27 if they're lucky to make it that far. We're just now getting to a period were people want to hear things at different ages. The younger portion of Gen Z is the start of this open mindset. They can listen to art and wisdom at any age. Early Gen Z couldn't do that. Millennials couldn't, Gen X, etc.
This is why I hate how popular trap & mumble rap became. It sparked a generation of rappers that relied entirely on their beats carrying them. Now that those beats aren't banging anymore we see them for the talentless hacks they are. The ones that are left got rich and got lazy and you can hear it in their formulaic music. Rappers from way back in the day weren't really retiring gracefully, they were being pushed out of relevance by the new and better rappers that were just out performing and out selling them. In the current generation of rap, the rappers that are pushing 40 are the one's selling the most, still breaking records to this day and have the best selling tours. Why would they retire when they've entered into an infinite money glitch because nobody from the new generation is good enough or hungry enough to take the spotlight from them? On top of that even if someone tried their best to take the spotlight, these guys (the big 3) are still out rapping 95% of the new generation so who tf is even good enough to take the spot?
Might actually be the lack of creativity, fighting for something and doing your own thing. Part of the reason might actually be ( And I'll sound like 40 now) Social media, it has taken something important away from us, maybe our own thought's idk, it's complicated to explain. I just feel like we're not moving in a good direction

He hasnt done anything for anyone on this label the entire time they been signed. Em hasnt changed his music in ages and im kinda over it personally. At this point i really dont care about how many words someone can fit in a bar or how fast they can go. Sometimes Em rhymes shit just for the sake of it sounding good but everyone gives him a pass because hes done amazing stuff before. i honestly think more people need to start thinking critically of Em instead of being so caught up in what he did do. Other music like rock country or reggae allow artists to continue doing music at old ages. But hip hop which is the youngest genre that JUST turned 50 seem to have a problem with older artists.

I would say one of the major reasons for this is probably oversaturation rather than just the fact that there's no one to take replace the greats. There are some really good rappers out there who are young and release fire music but due to all the noise we never really hear them. Coupled with the fact that our current greats not retiring plus all the ridiculous glazers out there who will never acknowledge when something new is better than one of the big 3

Its the ambition that has been lost. People are content to just enjoy the music rather than make it. The industry is less aggressive and the newcomers are struggling more because hip hop was kinda supposed to be underground but especially nowadays with how popular it is, people just don't have the ambition and drive to replace the big names

This is pointless, older hip-hop did step out of the way like Jay-Z said because it's exhausting to be popular and follow trends the only difference is that the fans followed them this time. The older gen was built on a solid foundation of quality over quantity and today's artist are too overexposed to the point of burnout and that's not even talking about beef. Snoop Dogg has been rapping for over 30 years and I still don't know his address but today's kids are so exposed that they beef with whole cities and flash their locations by accident or purposely and sometimes die before the second album or mixtape drop. Also why does people only put Rap in this box, every other genre never stops even when their voices are dying, they're still touring and some is for money but others for the fun of it. Why would Hip-Hop be different it never has been
So many that are on the come up die from drugs or being taken out by other sets or people who can't stand for anyone else to succeed. Live in the hood always trying to get out but once they do large numbers of people in their old hoods become their ops. Crazy

Watching this, I think we are fortunate to see the maturity and progression of hip hop. Those young dudes are going to keep coming up and there's a generation after Drake, Kenny, & Cole already putting in work. We got dudes like Denzel Curry, JID, Joey Badass keeping hip hop alive too. Then you got dudes like Kenny Mason, Tyler the Creator, & Smino pushing the traditional boundaries of the genre bleeding into RnB, punk, & pop in ways that is keeping the sound fresh. You have people in their late 20s early 30s being the center of the sound and up & comers finding their sound based on them. Rap does not have to equate to youth even though the culture is rooted in the spirit of being young, energetic, and rebellious. As a 28 year old, I want to grow and mature with the music I love & the past 15 years of being a hip hop head have let me do that.
It’s so crazy how long the current big 3 have been held up to that regard without a single one looking to have a solid runner up. The only few I thought for a moment were on their way were Denzel and JID, but sadly, as rap keeps losing popularity, and pathetic industry gimmicks keep being pushed in order to squeeze the last bit of life out of it, rappers like them that take time with their craft and don’t follow every industry trend seem to be forgotten fastest by the masses

Also crazy how much the landscape has changed man. The industry really tore the rap game to shreds. Sure you can blame the masses for how shallow and superficial everyone’s become, but the industry is what pushed for this. They pushed every rapper to look, sound, even be named the same as every other rapper out.

Juice WRLD, X and even Pop Smoke got like some the most streamed rap albums of all time I believe on Spotify. I know Juice alone got three in the top 10. Denzel and JID bro? We’re talking about stars that never took over from freaking Drake, Kendrick and Cole. The ones you named don’t really belong in such conversations.
Part of the problem us that people are stuck on these older artist and the mainstream ones that are pushed out. There is plenty of talent out there with superstar qualities if people looked
It would be much more accurate to say we have a problem with lazy dum-dums of all ages trying to correlate making good music with age/gender/orientation/skin color/etc instead of effort, (how many rappers even play any instrument or know anything about reading/writing sheet music AT ALL?) natural talent, work ethic, heart, and putting the music before a paycheck.

This isn’t just a hip-hop problem but mainstream music as a whole, the artists on top are the ones who came out before the streaming era, it’s way harder to have that superstar allure and build that unbreakable mega fanbase in the social media/streaming era which is why none of these newer acts are as big and will likely never be as big as their mentors. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to you.
