For anyone who thinking a change as a Kitchen porter. Go for it. I started as a Busperson. Grew tired of Wait Staff to clean this or that Table. Cause you have to empty the Buspan. And walk fast to the Dining Room. And repeat Process. Honestly. Was a Busser in my Mid30s. Than decided to work as a KP. It beats being in the same room as the Customers. IMO.

4:03 "What will you say to a school child who comes to you says 'look, I want to start my life in the kitchen (as a kitchen porter)' " ?
Best answer: "Stop using drugs kid".

+Chefdicedfoot How often to you see a KP on a celebrity chef's reality TV show? Every member of front of house and chef's brigade features except the KP. How do you explain that, chef?

You are missing the point, cooking is not about 'celebrity' reality tv shows, it is a career, a vocation and a lot of chefs START their careers in the potwash, that's where I started 27 years ago, career Kp's on the other hand are a different story,
because it is an unskilled job it can attract shall we say 'eccentric' types that are on the edge of society, they may have had drug problems, they may have had mental health issues, they may have been involved with crime, the catering industry in the current climate is a very difficult industry to recruit good staff into, No one wants to be a KP at a young age as a career choice, most merely use it as a stepping stone. I know when I give a commis chef a trial he or she spends the first day in the potwash,

@@lovefive652 It's hard work in general but it's fine if you're a grafter like prefer just getting your head down and not talking much i think the toughest thing about the job is the workload and the uncomfortable working environment on the really busy days.

Muppet; try it.. Honestly, if anyone could take their choice o drugs and/or drink; then work the day next to a 200 degree oven/grill for 12 hrs a day without a break... then fair play to em. I've heard more people complain about stress working in an office for 6hr's a day and I know they take more drugs.
