    My grandparents don't drink much tea, so whenever I visit them I get to drink one of the Lipton tea bags that has been "aging" in the back of their spice cupboard since the first World War.
    Congrats on 10K!!!!

      Adam Greenhaus Wow! So lucky to have that tea!

      Adam Greenhaus This literally made me laugh out loud. My grandparents passed on years ago, but they had "aged" Lipton tea bags in their cupboard as well. Thanks for the memories!

    • @kinghazzah

      Seems like many of us have this as a shared memory!

      Adam Greenhaus I never knew that Tea in Bags are better aged, especially Lipton. I thought they expire.

    • @adamgreenhaus4691
      @adamgreenhaus4691 7 лет назад +3

      It most certainly does not age. I was being a bit facetious.
      In its defense though, tea doesn't really expire unless its badly stored. Most old teabags should probably be safe to drink, but you wouldn't want to. Most low-grade teas just go stale and lose their flavor and complexity over time. (If they had any to start with.) In my opinion though, that stuff was "expired" the moment it left the factory.

    Celine: It has to be a quick infusion.
    Don: No it doesn't, let's brew it strong.
    Ha! Love it. Congratulations, guys!

      @@MeiLeaf The Chinese say that too many cooks will spoil the broth. So make up your minds and decide who is in charge!!! Celine is the perfect groupie who will "concur" everything the guru says. She is latched on to your every word and would not let go. She is like a tick attached to a dog's fur, a fitting ornament that goes so well with the scenery of your tea-tasting ceremonies.

      I think this isn’t giving Celine enough credit. She has serious tea knowledge and brewing experience. She is no groupie, she is a master in her own right. All respect of course!

    A friend in Singapore gave me a sample a black tea that dates from the japanese invasion to SGP. The leaves are quite broken, but the taste is very different to any other I've ever taste, its quite strong, a little of lychee and the fermented taste is present.
    I enjoy every of your videos, congratulations from México. Both of you are excellent presenting the tea world.

    Congrats fellas! Happy to squeak in just under the 10K mark.
    Edit: While it hasn't arrived yet, I have a 1990 Wang Tan Pei coming in from Taiwan. It'll be my first aged tea, and the last Tan Pei I had was an Alishan that kept tasting like different sorts of pleasantly musty ancient rooms like libraries, castles, and fortresses, before ending on a nice wooden barbecue. Mind, that was brand new, so I'm excited to find out what this aged one will do.

    Thanks for sharing this amazing tasting. A few years ago I had an aged Tie Guan Yin from the late 90s, a 11kg production. The first time I sampled it I felt drunk within 3 or 4 sips !
    It had a whisky like body, wooden / leathery coating with no bitterness but some tanic astringency when brewed for long. I purchased one kilo of it, and I drunk more than I sold of this one :) since this one I didnt find a good aged oolong / sigh

    I have a roasted Dancong thats 3 years old. Thats my oldest Oolong. It's slowly losing it's "roasted" flavor and the "fruitiness" has become more pronounced. I doubt I'll be able to hang on to it for 37 more years, but I should definitely get one to age for longer. Thanks for the video, and for letting me experience that beautiful view with you while i have my morning session.
    (edit) After watching more of the video I have to comment on the color. Even through the camera the color of that tea is amazing.

    Great to have 10K! I joined with my subscription not that long ago just about when you hit the 5K point. Let the "TeaHeads" of the world unite! Keep drinking the good stuff...oh and Don can't wait to see what may be more special than this one. About the oldest thing I've tasted would be maybe 15 years old (and it's because I bought it myself young and kept it). It was not a puehr but a white peony that sort of turned into a puehr and I was so new to teas at that time that when I opened the bag and is smelled like a puehr I decided to try it and I pronounced it GOOD! Take care and keep up with the good tea work.

    • @MeiLeaf
      @MeiLeaf  7 лет назад +2

      Thank you for your support, comments and for ordering some of our tea! A 15 year aged white peony sounds good actually.

    • @kinghazzah
      @kinghazzah 7 лет назад

      Actually Don, I pulled it out the other day and it still smells like a heavenly puehr, just on the light side and since it's all just loose leaf and was never put into a cake it's sooooo easy to brew! Like you, though, I do like "fiddling" with my tea cakes and separating out as much as possible the leaves from the "sweeping" prior to brewing. I just ordered some MORE of your great "stash" of teas...the most expensive tea in the world (I really broke the budget and bought 10 grams of the gleaming brow) so I can now say when it arrives and I savor the "real thing" that I have tried some of the extremely good teas of the Chinese Old World!

    Hey Guys - Enjoy your vacation & the warm weather. I think the coldest we have had in South Florida so far has been 58 F (14 C). The oldest pu-erh Barb & I have is 1950 Sheng (raw) - stored in Yixing clay unglazed tea storage jars with loose fitting clay caps. All our teas are stored in our son's bedroom - no light, electronic UV HEPA filter air cleaner going 24/7. Magnificent. Our oldest oolong is some 1960 Wen Shan Baozhong - this tea is stored in glass jars with screw-on metal lids having a silicone gasket for air tightness. I have not re-roasted any of my old aged oolongs but as the volume in the jar lowers, I do place them into smaller sized glass containers to keep out as much air as practical. No fermented or alcoholic tones at all. Again - wonderful. Year after year, the flavors, nose, and what we call "echo" gets better & better - so I think our tea storage room is doing well. As for the "weirdest" tea Barb & I have ever bought - a green called Azure Mountain. Extremely small fine leaves. What they did was cut the Camellia down so there was only a foot or so stump - no branches. The stump would than start to coppice - push out growth from everywhere on the stump. The growths, when they were smaller than 0.25" would be rubbed off and immediately dried. When this bright green dried tea is placed into a glass cup, all the tea immediately sinks and sticks upright under the steeping water - like a tiny micro-forest. The liquid is almost entirely clear and VERY medicinal. Super super bitter for 1 - 2 seconds and then bursting with sweetness. We only found this tea once when we visited the wholesale tea market in Shanghai. Barb asked the vendor woman if she had anything hidden under the bench or "in back" and she produced the Azure Mountain. Like I said - weird but wonderful.

    • @MeiLeaf
      @MeiLeaf  7 лет назад

      WOW! What a collection and being kept so perfectly. Can I come over for some tea?!
      I have never ever heard of this method of this Azure Mountain method but clearly Barb has got some tea hunter instincts!

    • @TerryPROorchids
      @TerryPROorchids 7 лет назад

      Hello Don - honestly, it took us several years and consults with a number of horticulture producers & professors in Taiwan to finally figure out the methodology behind that Azure Mountain tea even though i had the answer already in mind, but we needed confirmation. This is more of a medicinal steeping compared to a sipping tea because of the bitterness, but extremely refreshing and has that built-in kinetic show while steeping. Added extra benefit. I don't think you would have any reason to visit the Miami, Florida region - not much interest yet in good Chinese / Taiwanese / Japanese teas, but IF you are ever here, Barbara and i would obviously enjoy your company and get you guys thoroughly tea drunk.

    I was at a friend’s home today,she made the most amazing chicken and peanut stew,from West Africa,and I told her that I have some “gunpowder “ green tea,which is very much enjoyed in that part of the world,so I brought some for her to brew like they do in Senegal/Gambia.
    Oh my goodness.
    Gongfu,this was NOT.
    She put some leaves in this teapot,and boiled it for at least 6 or 8 minutes!!!
    Then,put a LOT of sugar into it.
    I was a guest in her home,so politeness was imperative.
    But yeah,wow,that happened.

    My oldest was a 1985 Aged Tieguanyin. Similar raisin/prune notes, But instead of an alcohol mouthfeel, think Szechuan pepper! Very tingly on the tongue and it had a mint coolness. Hi Don,
    Quick question. LOVE your videos...have seen them all. I am brand new to tea and really would rather not getting ripped off on bad tea. Do you offer a good tea sampler that I could buy? I'm trying to figure out what I like and would like to start with your personal recommendations. Any guidance here would be much appreciated! Also have some friends watching your channel and eager to get the same thing!!
    Thanks in advance!
    Michael

      Hi Michael. We offer tasters of all our tea so you can browse and select tasters. We offer this box (chinalifeweb.com/shop/product/gft-sigc) but it is currently out of stock because we are waiting for some teas to arrive.
      I would advise trying one of every tea type (a couple of oolongs) to get started or maybe you can choose 2 out of the following flavours and I can help you decide:
      Grassy
      Floral
      Nutty/Roasted
      Fruity
      Earthy/Woody
      Creamy

    The oldest tea I have had is only about 10 years old. The first 10 year old teas I had were awful though, lol. My ex-mother-in-law pulled the old "Hey, you like tea, you can have this!" and gave me a gift box of green teas that she had kicking around in tins that were not air tight. They barely even colored the water. I looked on the bottom of the tins and there was a date of 10 years before.
    Now I have had an aged pu-er that's 10 years old and was good :) So I guess that makes up for it, lol.

      :D There is a big difference between aged tea and old tea clearly!

    Hey Don,
    I have a question for you again. I have tried 5 different Raw PuErh's since the beginning of this year and noticed that all of them had this metallic iron taste in later infusions that got almost unbearable after infusion 6 or 7. The taste is very strong and it is very unpleasant. I have tried different Raw's to see if it was just a bad batch but the result was always very similiar. It feels like drinking blood or pennies. I have tried to find something on the internet but almost no one talks about iron or metallic taste which I find very strange. I wanted to know if this metallic taste is something normal vor puerh and I just happen to not like it or if it's something that indicates wrong storage or processing. With some of the teas it was coupled with an unpleasant sourness as well. I really wanted to give puerh a chance because you are talking about it so positively on your videos. What I experienced until now is not something that I want. Not as unpleasant as "Bacon-Tea" (Lapsang Souchong) but definitely not delicious for me.

    • @MeiLeaf
      @MeiLeaf  7 лет назад

      Firstly 'Bacon Tea' = LOL
      I have not experienced this metallic taste and have not heard it being mentioned by others either. I can suggest that either it is:
      1. The tea. But if you have tried 5 completely different ones then this would probably not be the issue.
      2. The water. I guess that you are using the same water as your other teas so I am not sure how this would be different for PuErh.
      3. You. People taste things differently and maybe some of the minerals in Raw PuErh are being picked up by your taste senses as metallic when others taste them as stone.
      Or a combination of the above? Sorry I can't be more helpful but maybe other teaheads can share their experiences?

      Thanks for your reply! Yes, Bacon Tea is a term that my friends and me came up with when tasting a very heavily smoked lapsang souchong. I know that not every lapsang souchong is incredibly smoky but we wanted to see what it is known for so we went for the strongest stuff we could find. THAT was a mistake! :D
      With the iron taste though: I thought that it was probably bad tea but when you say that you haven't come across this taste (And you must have had your fair share of bad tea..) then it is probably me and my tastebuds after all. I do use tap water but that actually doesn't mean anything because it's incredibly clean and soft water that we got from the tap here where I live. We got a water hardness of 3°dH (which is ~3,759°e) and barely anything in it. I check water quality regularly because I have three Aquariums. :) I also use it for all my teas and only expierenced iron taste in sheng puerh and nothing else.
      I am going to buy some samples of more expensive puerh's in the future and see how that works for me. I would actually love to send some samples to you so you could try it for yourself but I see that you are a busy man. :)
      EDIT: Also: I got the PuErh's all from the same vendor. So it might not be a coincidence.

    How big is that teapot i wonder? Looks so tiny! And i wonder if there are any other teas that kinda taste like alcohol.

    • @MeiLeaf
      @MeiLeaf  7 лет назад

      +Cadeyrn Dragheim it is a 70ml pot I think. I have never tasted a tea with such an obviously fermented taste. The closest I have tried is a very old white tea but I am sure that this Oolong had some alcohol level.

    Hello Don,
    I really enjoy the quality of the information itself, but why do you need to show fake emotions and social bullshit
    (as if there was that much bonding with the audience).
    Overtly promoting your videos or the shop is great, but this is obnoxious.
    The old videos where much more genuine.

    • @MeiLeaf
      @MeiLeaf  7 лет назад

      I am sorry if you think I am being fake but I am not and I genuinely appreciate this community of teaheads. The old videos were before we had this community but since then we have built virtual relationships with so many people and that is why the videos have naturally become more social.
