    Gr8 Andy, Like the video. You saved the day!
    I wanted to make a special present for a person who was very ill, the need for speed was paramount, the tide was coming in and I had the get the present out to a yacht so it could sail south from the small island where I live. I had all the bits of kit for turning a pen, but never made one before. I followed your video in stages, running from my computer in the house and out to the workshop. Cut blanks,... turn pen,... polish.. and assemble. Then run along the islands only track to the harbour. Did it all in under two hours and the pen is now on it's way to give encouragmnet and blessing. THANKS. GOD BLESS YOU.

    Simple enough. I have been watching other vids that went way above my budget and completely overwhelmed me.

    Subscribed. Fantastic video.
    Friendly to those who are inexperienced ( who may not understand some of the lingo), and for intermediate turners who just haven’t turned pens.

    Good video. Only thing I would add is that you need to screw the pen cartridge into the transmission, prior to mounting the clip end turned part..

    Are there any pen turners who have suggestions for what to use other than a powered saw for cutting pens?
    I’d really appreciate a recommendation on a specific parting tool~ I’ve been trying different things out, but I still haven’t found a great solution.
    The parting tools I have tried, feel too thick, and the current tool I’m using I think was sold as a “scraper” it has an arrow shape, replaceable heads.
    It’s great but I wish it was a bit longer, on the cutting part.
    Also, I’m using a Japanese saw, as for box cuts and initial cuts, it cuts on the pull. Which for someone with shakey hands, has been fantastic.
    Thanks!

    Are you using medium, thin, or heavy CA glue for the glossing? Also you forget to mention lining up the two arrows in order to keep the wood grain intact.

    What path would you suggest to someone who wants to start doing this but is not currently a woodworker? It looks pretty simple once you know the method you want to use.

    • @jayperdue1369
      @jayperdue1369 6 лет назад +2

      Frank Bellinger if you don't have a lathe already then you first need to decide if you want to get one that can do more than Pen's or if that's all your going to make is pens. Once you get the lathe I would definitely start with carbide turning tools so you don't have to sharpen them and can save money and they are easier to learn on. When making Pen's I only use the square with a s2 radius tip. You can get the set of 3 from rockler that he used in the video for $100 and that is the cheapest way to get all 3. Just know those are only for Pen's since they aren't long. But after you get the pen kit all that's left is to start having fun and relax. This is a great way to release stress. Hope this helped

    I was wondering what type of mandrill do I get for pen turning I dont want to get the wrong size. Plz help

    • @jayperdue1369
      @jayperdue1369 6 лет назад

      It is just called a pen mandrel. But the only thing that matters is what size taper your lathe is. You can get different kinds like one the shaft slides into the tapered end to the right length you need or the basic one you have to set a nut to the right size if it doesn't need the whole length. Just remember the Morse taper off your lathe is all that really matters

    Whats a good first wood lathe under $350.00 if any? i was looking at the brand WEN but some people say they are cheaply made. I guess because most of them are just rebranded Chinese lathes. Grizzly seems good but out of my price range. Anyone?

    1:16 The barrel-trimming end mill that came with my kit performs poorly. It's made of mild steel and the rake angle and the relief angle are all wrong for cutting wood. I don't get chips. I get smoke and squealing . Which is what a thoughtful woodworker would predict just based upon an examination of the tool geometry.
    Your mill here cuts much better. Perhaps you have specially sharpened you mill to correct this or you are using a special end mill not included in the kit. Perhaps your wood stock is of a species that is amenable to being worked with substandard cutting tools.
