Beautiful bowl. More importantly, as a novice turner, I enjoy how you explain the techniques you use. So many RUclips turners don't take the time to explain their processes and just assume all viewers are skilled. Thanks, enjoyed this video immensely.
Thank you for all that you do. I appreciate your ability to review the "simple" stuff that more advanced woodworkers such as yourself know. It enhances our ability to experiment and make beautiful things when we understand why and how to do things. Your opinions on the different options and woods inspire me and others.. In my opinion there are two types of woodworkers... Process and project wood workers. Both are brilliant! The project wood workers focuses on getting a certain project finished, constantly pushing ahead to reach the finish line. The process woodworker just enjoys the process and listens to the wood and methodically works with the wood to be inspired. During your projects you have a general idea that is constantly improving. Thank you for all the hard work and the keen sense of humor that you both you and Sheila give the world. You create and help others create what a awesome gift.
Hi Keith, that is a beautiful bowl mate! and I am with you with those ridges you weren't happy with, I always remember my woodwork teacher in school saying " If a jobs worth doing, it worth doing well" and that's how I work with any job I do to this day, almost 50 years later :)
I think you've outdone yourself, Keith! Beautiful job! Beautiful piece! I can't wait to see your next project! Please, more cool inlay work! A true fan!
Excellent! Thank you for taking the time to share your gift with viewers. I will now employ some of your shared knowledge into my projects. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. God bless you.
The bowl looks great Keith, really like the yew segments. They look a bit like pieces of courgette & really unique design. The finish is very nice & yes, I think it's definitely one of your best. Thumb up from me. Geof
The additional information on the how and why you are doing specific things is really helpful. Even though I have yet to begin turning, I am learning many great things that will allow me get off to a great start. Thanks for videos and please keep them coming.
Hi Keith, both yourself and Harry from the Little Garden Workshop have inspired me to have a go and make a video by turning a piece similar to your Sycamore bowl with Yew Inlay. Please keep your video's coming. Many thanks, Stephen
I found your channel just a couple of days ago and subscribed immediately, and I'm so glad I did. You make such lovely pieces and I can't wait to see more of your work :)
Hi Keith just found you. Great turning. An easy way to get the glue block off is to put it in the microwave a few seconds at a time and the glue softens again
Hello Keith and Shila,,,this is by far one of one of my favorites you'v done,,,love the yew and the acrliic,,,,i,m going to try that myself...happy Turning
Inbox clean up time again!! :) It's always nice to come back to 54a :) That inlay came out just amazing!! That finish man, so shiny, like glass! Gives me a second wind in going back to make some inlays as well!! Thank you for sharing man! Yuval.
Thanks Yuval.I think the Yo-grit helped a lot with the shine.I'm working on another inlay bowl at the moment, but it's something I don't think anyone's tried before,it might not work,so don't tell anyone.! 😀 Cheers, Keith.
Really beautiful bowl, Keith! Those yew inserts really look nice. I'm glad you thought about undercutting the rim, that was my thought while I was watching. I've found that I get better success with epoxy things by gluing the pieces down with some CA or even regular wood glue then pouring the epoxy around and over them - but that may just be me. Keep 'em coming!
Lovely bowl, the contrast of the Yew works really well with the Sycamore and I like the shape of the inserts. I will be trying something like this at some time, once I have got through the list of other things I want to try :)
Really nice bowl Keith. Looking down on the bowl to the yew inserts is almost an illusion. The inside of the bowl seems to stand taller than the rest but it isn't. Can't wait to see what your other ideas are.
great job again sycamore is a under rated wood just done a bowl with two miliput lines in the top turned out great so going to try one like you're bowl if OK with you, keep the good work up
Hi Keith! Beautiful work my friend! Loved the combination of Sycamore and Yew! Very nice to leave the bark in the Yew as well. The finish is absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing it! Cheers! Daniel
I like how this came out! Very nice. An idea fro setting the wood pieces. before doing the epoxy, spread some wood glue on the bottom of the wood inlay bits, put them in place and let it set up for 10 minutes, then use the 5 minute epoxy to fill in the gaps. That way you dont need to wait hours and hours, or even a day to finish the piece.
Its a great looking bowl.I enjoyed the video. It looks like you have the same lathe as I have except yours is red (Axminster?) but mine is blue (Charnwood) but they are both made in China by the Bert factory. Thanks james
Thanks James. Yes,it's an Axminster, and as you said, made in China like many more just about identical lathes.Different colour, different badges, same lathe!!Cheers,Keith.
+Keith Barrow I definitely can tell. When I was in high school, carpentry was my favorite class. It's been a while since I could do this kind of work, and I'm hoping I can start getting tools to get back into it.
Nice work Keith like that idea see you have changed your tool post I have the same lathe and find it won't go down as far has I need with some tools with the tool post that came with it do you find that one better.
Hi Keith. Fantastic bowl mate and it's great to have you back producing these videos. I have just started to get in to woodwork myself but mainly making handwork like clocks and candle holders, I really want to get into turning. Could you give me any advice on what would be a good starting lathe or what to look for when buying one. Thanks again mate and keep the vids coming.
I've just upgraded my lathe, but still stayed with Axminster. They have a 3 year warranty on their lathes, and their customer service is excellent. My first lathe was the Axminster 1218vs,which I would recommend if you don't want to turn any massive bowls (over 12"). If you want extra bed length you can get the bed extension for it. I've just got the Axminster AWVSL1000,which I mainly got for the revolving headstock in case I want to turn a big bowl one day! Whatever you choose, most of them are made in China by the same company! Try to go for variable speed though,it saves messing about changing belts from pulley to pulley. Good luck, let me know what you end up with,Keith.
Thankyou Grant. We have quite a lot of sycamore in Britain, but to be honest I don't know if it grows in other countries.Maybe a Google search will tell you? 😀
Beautiful bowl. More importantly, as a novice turner, I enjoy how you explain the techniques you use. So many RUclips turners don't take the time to explain their processes and just assume all viewers are skilled. Thanks, enjoyed this video immensely.
Thankyou very much Tom. I needed everything explaining to me when I started,so it just comes natural I guess!!

Thankyou Kat. I just do what I enjoy doing, and am really pleased that others enjoy watching me (and Sheila).
Take care,
Keith 😀
Hi Keith, that is a beautiful bowl mate! and I am with you with those ridges you weren't happy with, I always remember my woodwork teacher in school saying " If a jobs worth doing, it worth doing well" and that's how I work with any job I do to this day, almost 50 years later :)
I totally agree with you. :)
Came out great! The yew inserts gave it just the right amount of contrast.
Thanks Scott. That piece of Yew was just a bit too small to do anything else with.Glad I never threw it away now!
I think you've outdone yourself, Keith! Beautiful job! Beautiful piece! I can't wait to see your next project! Please, more cool inlay work! A true fan!
Many thanks Marilyn :)
it's a beautiful bowl and the yew inlay really makes the bowl. As you said the design opportunities for this design are endless.

James

Thanks Aaron, when you finally get going you'll really enjoy it :)
Stunning bowl Keith, I love the fact that you left the top of the plugs exposed and didn't completely cover them with epoxy.
Very nice Keith. Nice use of materials.
Nice job, Keith. Thanks for sharing.
Keith, wow it is a stunning bowl wow.
That was extremely well done, I have learned quite a lot, that’s given me room for thought..thank you Keith

Absolutely love this bowl!! I love the natural look of the inlay!!
Thankyou very much :)

Hi Keith just found you. Great turning. An easy way to get the glue block off is to put it in the microwave a few seconds at a time and the glue softens again

Hi mate! You can't have enough time for turning with all those machines to make!!😀
Beautiful bowl Keith.
Thankyou very much David :)
Thanks Tim. They were quite rough offcuts,so I thought I'd give them a nice bed of epoxy to settle down in !! :)
Very nice Keith, it looks great. The Yew segments remind me of lemon slices so I had to have a few G&T's while I watched it.
Lol ! Glad you enjoyed it,and the gin! 😀
brilliant idea mate ,love the finish ,take care garry
Lovely bowl, the contrast of the Yew works really well with the Sycamore and I like the shape of the inserts. I will be trying something like this at some time, once I have got through the list of other things I want to try :)

Beautiful video, Keith.
The dish looks great, the idea with the inlaid yew pieces is super.
What was it, one needs to have only ideas
Thanks Gunter.I don't know why I thought of doing that though ,but I'm glad I did !😀
That's true.
The ideas usually come when machining the workpiece (turning)
Awesome bowl . Thanks for sharing !
I would love to see those beautiful glowing sycamore shavings done up in resin and made into something nice.
Very nice bowl Keith. Cheers, Jim
Thanks Jim,I might do one or two more pieces along the same lines.:) All the best, Keith.

Great looking inlaid pieces...what is that finish you are using,,,,?
Beautiful piece and a great idea for the inlay. Must try. Is the sicamore indigenous to Britain?
Thankyou Grant. We have quite a lot of sycamore in Britain, but to be honest I don't know if it grows in other countries.Maybe a Google search will tell you? 😀
Nice looking bowl! Out of linguistic curiosity (I'm not from England, I'm Swedish), is it a West Midlands accent you have?
Yes,it sure is!
