I agree with you and I took piano lessons for a very long time, but could never grasp learning the music notes so I always had played by ear and I was able to fudge it with my piano teacher
Amazing tutorial! Probably the best I've seen on youtube. I've played piano for years but I never learned to read music sheets. I always played by ear and learned from synthesia piano tutorials. Your combination of first talking to us throughly about how its played and then at the end giving us a complete look at the piece, its just great. This is what all piano tutorials on youtube should be.
I play guitar but been wanting to build my piano/keyboard skills. I can play very simple thing with both hands but want to take my playing to the next level.
Thank you! I have been on a break due to moving and it taking some time for me to get the new recording space set up. But I fully plan on getting out more tutorials. Do you have any requests?
thanks Mike for this lesson. Great job. I have subscribed. I am an old man now, (played guitar for 20+ years) and upon retirement wanted to learn to play piano. Mostly love pop/rock/blues music (70's and 80's). Getting pretty far along (took lessons for 1-year, thru 2nd Alfred book on my own) now and so grateful learning piano forces one to read music accurately, especially if you are going to play with other people. sorry to ramble. this lesson is very accurate, it will help me smooth out the changes. AND to all others, if you play an instrument (no matter how good your ear is) LEARN to read and eventually write music. It is a blessing.
Man, I gotta say, that was simply outstanding. I’m a 2nd year adult piano student, and I am going to learn to play this timeless Journey song, thanks to your tutorial. 👏👏
I love watching this tutorial many times.....I see something I missed the first time and learn something new the next time....I guess it takes time to sink in . Cool bro!
OMG, where have you been?! Best tutorial for this song. Love how you teach, too. I subscribed. Could you make more tutorials for Journey? Open Arms is another great one. Also any simple and advanced Coldplay songs would be awesome.
Man this is awesome!!! This is really awesome! It’s really one of the only accurate songs I have found. Can you do, “ all cried out” by Lisa Lisa and the cult jam. Or Styx lady95 the 95 version. It’s amazing what other up to you tube. Leaving out notes and chords and wrong it’s a mess even with guitar tabs etc it’s like that. But, This is right in the money!! Amazing really good stuff!
Things I liked: The color coding. I’m not sure what the method is here, but it works. For a mostly play by ear player like me- sometimes all those black keys blend together. Also, all the small details do help. Like displaying chord names, and individual notes (B1, B2 etc. ) Also- a huge part is- having the vocal layover. Sometimes , if you’re someone who plays by memory like me, you get into a pre chorus or something and you forget where your at. Hard to explain but the vocal really helps you keep things in order. Once again, great work!
I'm so glad the tutorial was helpful and thanks for the specific feedback. I'm especially glad the color coding was helpful because there really isn't a method, it's just what my software generated.
Wow! Love this Bro! And watching you play along with the song has inspired and encouraged me to want to play with more feeling and harmony when I play . So cool at the school...you rule!
Glad I found this video, I am fairly new to piano, though I have played guitar for years, this video explains a lot of helpful tips and a visual demo- took me over a month to learn how to sing it like Steve Perry memorizing the lyrics and practicing the vocals, but I bet it takes 6 months minimum to learn to play it on the piano... but hey, The crowds love a good cover of this song so what are you gonna do... thanks for posting this!!
There is a part you skipped after, Restless hearts vs then it goes sleep alone tonight sending all my love on the wi re Then there are like three chords so after the wire it does like three chord run up before the Em gm#m B, I am sure it’s all the chords already played but. It will take me way to long to ear it lol. You play the part in the play through i seee I got it. Thanks again, I have tried a lot of other online lessons. This works best for me and specially accurate like this. I have played guitar since I was 13 and I play other instruments so I have a pretty good foundation, but piano is my weakest instrument. I can’t wait for you to do some more videos. This channel will be huge man if you put the time Into it. Awesome Lesson!!! I would pay for these membership or whatever just An FYI!!
Awesome Mike! Thanks so much for this… I’d been playing it this way pretty much, just the wrong inversion on the first chord.. this has helped me tremendously 👍🏻☺️
I noticed on a couple of parts, you adjusted some settings on the fly but, I couldn't notice any changes to sound, tone etc.. what were you changing? Just curious. Also, I LOVE your format. First CLEARLY explaining all of the sections. Then, playing it all together to see how it all fits. If I get stuck on a part, I can just flip to that part of the song. Love it. Keep up the amazing work. 👏
Hi Tami, unfortunately I do not. However I did put the link in the description where you can get the same sheet music that I used as a reference. Hope that helps!
Going through a tough time with my girlfriend right now and we decided we need a break. We are both hurting, but need time to improve as individuals. I don't know how to play piano, but I figured I'd learn how, and start with this song.

I wasn't changing tone at all, I was actually just turning pages on my tablet as I was reading the part. :-)
But thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you find it helpful!
Do you have the chord sheet for this on your website by chance?
Hi Tami, unfortunately I do not. However I did put the link in the description where you can get the same sheet music that I used as a reference. Hope that helps!
Amazing tutorial but at some parts I need you to slow down just a tiny bit please!
