  • The Plants for the Southwest Nursery trip did something to me. Perusing Mesa Garden on a relaxing weekend evening in front of the TV with a Cookie lounging by your side is always a dangerous activity. I forgot about what I did and then one day a box showed up in my mailbox... Now let's open that box together and see what we did.

      Ha! I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one 😂 While I was unboxing I had a constant inner monologue of "I don't remember buying this. Did I buy this? Why doesn't it ring a bell?"

    I had those Echinoides 'Bridgesii' seeds in my cart and when I went to purchase they were out! At least they went to a good home :) Ended up receiving some gift cono ectypum tischleri and uviforme seeds in previous MG orders that are SO cute as they begin to poke out of the soil - now I'm hooked

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  10 месяцев назад +1

      Ha! I stole the seeds out of your cart! I sowed them already and I can say they are coming up really nicely so recommend them the next time! What's your method of growing cono from seed? Is it different from cactus seeds in general?

    • @rantillodesign
      @rantillodesign 10 месяцев назад

      Your videos inspired my seed growing journey so very similar to the same process as the copiapoa videos just a few deviations here and there! Surprisingly, all of my astros and copiapoas have experienced some form of rot or loss in one way or another but zero issues with the Conophytum thus far. I have started crushing my pumice to be coarse sand and mixing it with my roughly 20/30/30/20 “cactus” soil, pumice dg/lava and perlite mix and they were the first to get the treatment.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  10 месяцев назад +1

      Are you growing the lithops from seed? Any special treatment to grow them? Or treat them like any cactus seeds?

    • @HyrimBot
      @HyrimBot 10 месяцев назад

      i poured fine sand into the seed packet and shook it up then poured that onto the soil mix. i've been taking my seedlings out of humidity domes as soon as they pop up on most stuff other than ariocarpus but i have to babysit them so they don't dry out. i really wasn't sure when they would be big enough to stop watering them regularly. had to keep close eye on them and watch for the tops to start getting puffy like a marshmallow which i think is indicator that leaves are ready to split and then let off the water. some are still a bit behind on development so i try to give them a drop or two of water without getting the bigger ones wet. yes, i started with a mixed pack of 100 seeds from Mesa Garden and have recently been starting all the freebie packs that they send with my regular orders. i've bought a couple larger lithops live plants from a nursery in the past and i killed them so was really scared to even try.

    Cookie’s Conophytum 😂. I’ve never had much success with Conophytum. They always end up dying. I have a few now that are doing okay but I don’t hold my breath lol.

      I've had the same experience with Lithops and I'm hoping Conos will be more straightforward... but there's only one way to find out.... so far I have no idea what I'm doing! I kinda water them because it's winter but that's about it.

    Hey Jenny, where do you get those garden tags? It looks like pencil writes really well on them. The tags my local nursery sells smears really easily, and I've gotten similar results on Amazon.

      I bought the labels off Amazon. Here's my affiliate link to the latest ones I bought: amzn.to/3uSKrSV There are many options that are less than 1000 labels though lol. I've purchased this pack of 200 labels before too: amzn.to/3GDGhAY

    from what i hear, even if you think a cono died over the summer it's best to keep it at least another growing cycle or two and try to water it in winter juuuust in case it's not actually dead so you don't end up throwing away a perfectly good plant 😂

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much for leaving me this message because some of the conos are not looking too happy now. I will not assume they are dead even if they look like it 😂

      @@cookiescacti it's sooo hard with these guys 😭 i thought my C. maughanii were dying last year around this time but now i know they're just like that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ some conos go crispy earlier than others so it's always anxiety inducing the first time with a new plant 😭

      Its really common to ship plants bare-root, its a lot safer for the plants to be wrapped up individually as a full pot could very well be broken or shift during transit :>

    • @morningstar8187
      @morningstar8187 10 месяцев назад

      Shipping succulents bare roots is pretty standard. Mesembs deal with having no soil for extended periods of time exceptionally well. They are typically grown in a rocky substrate, which would make shipping unnecessarily cost prohibitive. The heavy pots could squish the plants during shipping, and the rocks could cut them and lead to rot. Most people like to use them as part of a larger succulent arrangement anyways.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  10 месяцев назад +1

      Ohh thank you to those who responded! Now I understand the comment. Yeah, shipping bare root is the most common method here, at least in the United States. Very few sellers ship plants with the pot. I've bought many plants that are shipped bare root and didn't have any issues potting them up after receiving them - they all acclimated to their new environment and are doing very well.
