  • A commonly asked question, by both non-practitioners and practitioners alike! In this short talk, Daizan Roshi explains simply and lucidly what Zen is. When you come to practice Zen you can find a source of happiness that nobody can give you and nobody can take away, independent of your situation or conditions.
Over many years of strict training, in Japan and the west, Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi received Dharma Transmission and permission to teach in both the Rinzai and Soto lineages of Zen. He now teaches at the Yugagyo Dojo in London, UK. For more information see www.zenways.org
Transcription/subtitles kindly done by Laura Shinsei Cecil.

Zen unlike various other forms of Buddhism puts most of it's emphasis on the meditative mindset then it does on either guide lines, rules or creeds and I think that in alot of ways Zen transcends both Buddhism as well as culture and I believe that you can achieve the Zen state no matter what culture which you are a part of even if that culture is not buddhist or even if your not a buddhist yourself.

What i like about zen is that it doesnt bullshit around or build complicated mythology imagery to distract the mind. It wants you to focus on whats actual enlightenment in a bottle, shikantaza. There is no less and no more to it. Whats zen good for? Nothing. Its so devilishly simple and hidden in plain sight... A work of art

I remember Eckhart Tolle speaking about a Zen master that said "enter Zen from here" ... that got me thinking about Zen as a kind of 'space' to be in. Then I started thinking about the Dao, that kind of 'flow' to be immersed in. I'm just now starting to look for that space, that flow, one thing I've noticed is that as I do my daily chores and are perhaps in that 'flow space' then I don't have accidents or mistakes. Haha I guess I would say 'exit Zen from here' as I hit my head on an open casement window. :) _/\_

Don’t misinterpret what I’m saying but last year, I moved from a big city to the a property of nothing but old forest. Well I slowly carved out enough space for a modest home and a few animals. Last year I put in a fairy garden, a large one, and this is no lie…as I would work out there on the smallest of detail (moving moss patches, gathering small stones or bits of bark, creating fairy yards…I would forget time. Hours would pass like mere minutes. I would lost myself and immerse myself in the bird sounds, my chimes, the wind and what my hands were touching. I felt like I had entered some other world but was grounded in this one. I learned how to sort of relax in a way I never have before and when I’d had enough, I could walk away and feel so entirely at ease. I called it “zen”. It sure feels like being zen. ❤

As someone who found zen in my youth and has now found a sort of peace that fills me with movement and compulsion, this calmness is interesting. It strikes me as acceptable, and practically rhetorical, but not necessary.

For your security I would not suggest you looking for Zen, a big connectivity, at this point. Your profile pic is a skull and you have lots of videos looking for spirits at night. These might not be toys.
Cheerish gratitude, love, life... create them everywhere and those will naturally come to you and the things you are not ready to deal with will leave. Then you will understand.
My best faith that you will take good care of yourself and look for the Sacred to guide and protect you. Please take care and ask for help if you need, the Sacred Angels are very strong.
      Peace
Edit: As you can see we all have a lot to learn. The asnwer below seem to be much more in the zen concept.

Hi Rose. Meditation is not about clearing your mind. Having a blank mind is not the aim - it may happen spontaneously from time to time. What we try to do is become aware of everything that we feel and experience without wanting or wishing it to be different. Why not try one of our guided meditation practices available here zenways.org/learn-basic-sitting-in-zazen/
