    Wouldn't it be better to change the bedroom and living room around so if you're sat in the living room you don't need to go through the bedroom to get to the toilet or kitchen?

      I should have showed in the video, there's a side door into the kitchen!

    • @PreppingAngel
      @PreppingAngel Год назад +2

      I'm thinking the same thing. The bedroom at the far end. I like the overall plan except going through the bedroom to get to the bathroom/hall and then into the kitchen. If they do have company who is going to think it's nice to go through the outside then into the kitchen and bath especially in snow or rain? Unless there is another way into the kitchen from the inside.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 Год назад +3

      @@PreppingAngel Yup, I wouldn't want my guests to all walk through my bedroom in order to get to the bathroom or kitchen either. I know it would be a massive amount of work but maybe you could close up the existing doorway into the extension and build a new one in line with the existing doors by the front wall? That should make arranging furniture quite a bit easier.
      Or you could swap the kitchen and bedroom around and have the bedroom in the extension. Still not ideal in my book (I don't like guests to see my kitchen if it gets a bit messy) but still much better.

    I am sure you will get plenty of ideas so here is mine. The current bedroom becomes the living room, the current living room becomes the kitchen (it will stay really warm in the winter with the thick walls and stove) and the cold room becomes the bedroom as you only sleep there and with plenty of blankets you would be fine. Whatever you decide it will be so fun to watch it happen!

    Hello!
    Fist time I saw your site pop up on my feed. I enjoyed todays clips, lively.
    My oldest daughter lives in Cumbria so know how brutal winters are up northwards. I was there for a month last December and like to have froze most of the day in daughters 400 year old farmhouse, even with heating on at times. You have to work indies when it’s bad weather and enjoy the good days to work outside. You just can’t do much in Wintertime there, so I know it’s harder where you are. I’ve been to Ft. William in the 80’s on a trip from Suffolk. I try to get home once a year for some good tasty things that I miss living overseas.
    Best of luck with the back steps.
    I so love to bake , but cook too. Soon be time for making of my holiday cakes to enjoy though the season. Be safe and stay well!
    All the best. Maureen.

    Your dinner is so easy and looks so yummy. I will have to try it. I love the idea of the steps, predictable and pretty. I am not a builder or engineer, but maybe your "living room" can be the kitchen and the lower kitchen can be your bedroom? So you don't have to travel trough your sleeping are to get to the kitchen? I don't know if any of your appliances or stoves can be easily moved to that area.

  •  Год назад +2

    No expert but the new floorplan looks amazing to me. Lighted and more compact and efficient kitchen and a bigger bathroom? Absolutely. I know it's hard stone but it would make more sense to me if that "westward" doorway from the new bedroom was moved down flush with the "south" wall. I noticed from an earlier video that some of that stone is already gone? Probably too much hassle. Anyway I'm so glad you decided to share your adventure with us. It's fun just to think of the possibilities and see where you go.

    Eventually if possible, I would seriously consider bumping out the side kitchen wall and making the entire “new” addition even wider; possibly even raising the roof on that side. You’d get less-cramped rooms that way, and would have enough space for the bathroom without loosing anything. That upper kitchen part could make a lovely library space.
    I also agree with those who suggest putting the bedroom at the far end as the footprint now stands. It will make a bit of a walk to the bathroom, but then any guests won’t be walking through your bedroom OR through rain or snow or wind to get to the bathroom. Or, widening it out would give you the option of putting a bedroom in the new half as well, leaving the original cottage as living room, office, and dining room. The new would then be bathroom with bedroom on the far side; library (or dining room and swap the library into the old part, and kitchen.
    You could put another heating stove in the kitchen. We love using an micathermic wall heater-we live in a US city but don’t have a central heater. This is more energy-efficient and cheaper.

    Hmmmm, that recipe looks very hearty and wintery. Would have needed that after the stair build and the boat rowing!!
    I hope you get to put a little motor on it soon. It will make the cross faster and in times of urgent need, much faster.
    Katie, the drawings of the house looked really good, very clear and I can understand why you'd want to have everything how you want it.
    My two cents would be to make your kitchen into where you are thinking of having the bedroom. As you have lots of openings in the rocks through the doorway, you would be able to bring water and electrical pipes wherever you'll need. Then you can have a nice large work prep area (like kitchen island) for when you'll need to process all your veggies, and make preserves etc.. and use the kitchen island to have meals by the fire for example etc..
    With moving the bathroom etc it shouldn't be too much a trouble, you can always elevate sinks, toilets, bathtubs and showers a bit to allow for pipes etc.. especially since it was added not that long ago.
    If you use the most recent extension as your bedroom, it would be big enough to have your writing desk and knitting / sewing nook with great lighting. And use the littler room between (the possible )study as a more formal dining room perhaps? Just because you will have your office in the outside building?
    Anyways, just a few added thoughts.
    In the end, it's you & Scott who are living there, so go with what will work for you ;)
    The only advice I can give which I have found helpful, is separately draw to size furniture that you know you will be using and cut them up, do label them 😂. Then use them in your drawing to see what really is do-able or not. Good luck, this is the fun part!!! 😊

      @@TheScottishIsle you know, I just realised that the little room is actually quite small, so that would make for a very enclosed dinning experience, lol!!! So yes a little study would work great, and so nice to have!
      And thinking more of your plans, I actually think it makes sense. I didn't realise you had a sliding door into the kitchen, and I was imagining you carrying your veggies all through the house ;)
      Then that means that cooking will warm up that space nicely, and you get to have a cosy fireplace in your bedroom, and that's just lovely :)
      Isn't it something how we get so involved in your plans!?!
      Good luck with it all, you guys are doing amazing, and I love the stairs outside. They are going to look like they have always been there.

    Copper tape around the treshold works pretty well for keeping slugs from crawling in through doors for a few years until the patina on it stops it being toxic to slugs.

    You can obviously do whatever you want since it's yours, but I would personally prefer putting the bedroom on the right side of the entrance since it seems to be the most private room. If you ever have company and they want to go to the kitchen they would have to walk through the room left of the entrance. So you would have people walking through your bedroom in that case (assuming I understood the explanation correctly).
    I like the plans for moving the water heater and enlarging the bathroom though!

    I just thought that "Fanny Power" arrangement reminded me of my harp teacher who taught me to play the celtic harp when i was a teenager. Then i looked at the music credits and found my harp teachers name, Reidun. What a crazy coincidence! I really should repair the strings on my harp so i can play again...

    Sprinkle around window frames, plinths and of course any of the tinest openings.

    thinking on your redesigned steps. I would pull the steps (edge of first step up) line up to the existing old wall. Thus having wall "become" your stair wall-rail, when you come down the steps.
    but that is your flavor of design...

    Not a builder but I'd sure not want only entrance to kitchen through the bedroom. LRoom in center of house will be warmer in winter, and sleep is better in cooler end of house as it is now. I have an odd livingroom and i just have chairs and a small loveseat. All can easily be moved around to accomodate guests or whatever your current needs are.

      The idea with the house is to put it back to its original state as much as possible, whilst retaining modern comforts. But there is another side door from outside straight into the kitchen, which maybe didn't show on film.

    Be really careful with steps a lot of people make this fatal mistake. When you descend you naturally go in a rhythm and in balance, so when you abruptly change this even by 15mm it can cause a trip hazard, hence the building regs for internal and external fire staircases etc. I’m not sure if Scotland has regulations for external access steps. As for landscaping steps it is usually best to follow suite by keeping an even height “rise” about 120mm to 160mm but you can alter the depth “going” 220mm - 300mm. The best way to introduce a random appearance is to create a landing area in which you could change the direction of the steps and add some planting.

    • @TheScottishIsle
      @TheScottishIsle  Год назад +2

      Thanks for this. It's already a marked improvement...you should have tried walking up the Great Atlantic Wall! So, yes, you're completely right in getting the 'going' of the steps right. 👍🏻

    It's so difficult to know for sure but I'd prefer to have a bedroom away from kitchen. Rumbles from white goods and smells from cooking would bother me. We converted our house from its original use as a barn and struggled with the layout for quite some time.

    It would be a better flow and room to room relationship if you made your bedroom the kitchen, with bathroom, heater, washing machine in the extension, than use the sunken extension as your bedroom. Office and coat closet, bench in the entry vestibule as you have. Cozy living room on the right as you have.
    Cheers!❤
