I was nervous I was going to fall while doing a back walkover, (the floor was very very slippery Bc of cleaners for costume fallout and feet sliding) and so I just arched- I was so nervous I almost fainted-
It really did look painful. Even my dad who is a doctor (I’ve been showing him that ballet very much IS a kind of sport, or can be) said that could have fractured a rib or two, depending on the flooring and the exact angle of how she landed. She didn’t have much time for reaction to slow her momentum before her torso smacked the ground. Having it distributed is better than at one point, but still. She must have been winded at the very least. She held on to her mask like a champ though.
I was shocked when i saw her fall. I didn't know what the mistake could possibly be, but once she was up in the air on that second jump my brain just said "oh dear god no, shes going to not be able to catch herself after that.". I applaud her for being able to continue after a fall like that. I certainly would not be able to dp that.
I know right! The male dancer is Nikolai Tsiskaridze, and I'm not sure who the female dancer is. Sorry! I also should have stated in the video the first clip isn't really a mistake but a performer doing his job brilliantly!
Yeah, once I worked really hard on my variation on the eve of a show. When I did the show the next day, my feet were hurting so bad(my skin was peeling of and I have a lot of blisters) (dancers, you know the drill) and I had to keep dancing and smiling for the whole show. Painful
Actually I saw Zakharova fall in one performance of Giselle, during the pas de deux in the 2nd part with Sergei Polunin as Albrecht. She recovered instantly.
Accidents are just part of live theatre, I've come to realise. I just finished out a production of Romeo and Juliet as Benvolio and during the first fight scene between Tybalt and myself, my sword cracked clean in half (they were wooden and painted since some of the performers were very new to stage fighting). So we threw them down and started fighting with our fists instead, just whispering to each other before the next move came. XD The crowd loved it and the chaos of the other fighters covered our whispering.
I feel so bad for laughing at 1:52 everytime... The poor woman, that must have hurt so much! It's just hilarious to me how she gets on up smiling super wide like nothing happened. A true professional
I fell on stage while dancing and it was pretty embarrassing but I carried on and we placed 1st in our category and 1st overall we then made it to the final !!!!!!! So moral of the story is ... don’t give up !!!!
*_Being a dancer, every time I saw someone falling or something from their wardrobe malfunctioning my heart just felt so much fear for them. I know the emotional pressure they have._*
I just imagined in 2019 dance teachers are like: you can go wrong now but there is NO second chance on stage! In 1980 dance teachers be like: You made it up now but if you were dancing for the Kings and queens your head would be chopped off!
Thanks for the video. It only made me admire and respect those dancers more. I am curious, if anyone would be able to tell in the first Nutcracker part, was Nikolai Tsiskaridze dancing his original sequence while the ballerina was off the stage, or was he actually dancing some of the ballerina part, or maybe even some improvisation?
I just watched another Bolshoi Nutcracker and looks like you're right! The ballerina left the stage right in the moment when the choreography had the two dancers doing parts that do not require partnering so Tsiskaridze continued on with his own part. The ballerina was quick to return right when the choreography required partnering again! But it must have been a very anxious moment for the two dancer as Tsiskaridze realized he had to carry out his part on his own :)
@@AngelaChen1115 Thanks for checking. I also found a video of their Nutcracker, and like you said the timing was actually very good for them to address the shoe issue... a little gap between two partnering sequences. I totally agree with the anxious moment. It must have been a huge relief for Tsiskaridze when the ballerina came back on stage right in time!
also amazed by the Corps not flinching when she fell, they’re so used to doing the choreography, not a flinch. I’d probably freak out for a second like “u good ??”
Kitri takes so much stamina, I bet it wouldn't be hard to make a mistake here or there. It's so amazing how most of these dancers go through 3 hours not making one mistake! And I hope you were able to recover after breaking your fan! I bet you finished off everything beautifully though :)
Not only Zakharova, but also Sylvie Guillem and Margot Fonteyn! I don't think any dancer has got through a career without making mistakes. Carrying on afterwards as if nothing had happened is a true art!
What a job! You need to be 100% all the time, hundreds of pairs of eyes are focused on you and you are supposed to give us perfection, nothing less. How can these people take the pressure, not break? My respect, the highest respect. They can be shot and they still smile, gracefully going down.
I was in a colorguard in high school. I was the rifle captain and standing at the front of a v formation in the show. It had been a rough year for me. I had lost my dad suddenly to cancer and was exhausted. We had slight variations of our show based on if it was being done inside, outside or in a parade formation. Well at one point I zoned out and started doing the entire wrong version of the show. Without missing a beat, the rest of the rifle line switched to the version I was doing until the next break in the music when our formation moved again and I realized what I did. No one in the audience even notice. The only time we were out of sync was when I did a double toss the others didn’t. And since I was at the front the audience just thought it was a spotlight moment. Your team members always have your back.
The first time I saw Limenko fall I thought she looked more graceful doing that than me just walking hahaha. I was even more shocked when she got up and kept dancing with a smile on her face as if nothing had happened. If that had been me I would've started crying on stage! Anyways, a side note, I found this clip from Limenko's own Instagram actually. I love a ballerina who admits she's not perfect since this art makes so many strive for this impossible perfection and I thought it was so refreshing to see that!
@@AngelaChen1115 Oh, 100%. I actually do dance, mainly ballet and many of the people I dance with think they are perfect..(sometimes I do too) but we know we aren't. A dancer who can admit that they aren't perfect will get farther than those who think they are because they will be more willing to improve and take corrections.
As a dancer (though not nearly as professional as everyone in here), I can relate to Anastasia’s fall so much. I remember face planting on the stage once (like her). Another time, I cartwheeled into a wall. Ouch.
Trust me it hurts a lot. Hence her grabbing and stretching her foot and testing her en pointe after. I've done it and have permanent damage to the ligaments in my ankles. One has decent mobility, the other is down to about 50% mobility. All this because of dance.
i think it humanizes them and i think psychologically it makes people like the performance even more, seeing how even the hardest workers can make mistakes.
I love these videos, they really help me realize that even the best dancers make mistakes. I find it hard to realize that not everyone is perfect and it’s completely fine to make mistakes. You should always try to do something and not worry about making a mistake.
That shows the skill toughness, and professionalism of these dancers! To make a mistake, or have a wardrobe malfunction, fix the problem quickly and go back to dancing and carry as if nothing happened ! I have nothing but the highest respect for these dancers!
This is great and I agree: such errors only gives me even *more* respect for the incredible skills these dancers possess. It reminds me exactly how difficult this art is to execute. To slip and fall flat on your face, get up swiftly and gracefully and keep going -- if I was in the audience, I'd clap twice as hard for her professionalism!
I feel so bad for Anastasia and even worse for laughing at the incident, but bruises to her ego and body aside, the grace and poise with which she recovered from that mishap is truly admirable. Well done!
1:53 I felt that in my soul. It rattled my bones. PTSD flashbacks to the one and only time I fell like that and I’m just thankful it was in a rehearsal. 😂 That being said, I fell on stage a few years ago during an incredibly fast and high energy tap dance but not during the difficult steps. No. The music slowed down for a minute and we had two slow, sexy walks and I rolled my ankle and fell on my face. Walking.
Us dancers go through years of intensive training to hopefully bring a smile to your faces so when we make a mistake it hits us hard. But we keep going for the audience and the joy we gain from your happiness!
I think it probably really helps to be able to put yourself in the mindset of an actor, because at the heart you're just playing a character in a story, so when you make a mistake you can view it as breaking character and recover better than if you viewed it as *oh god everyone just saw me mess up* because you're just the body of a character for the story you're telling, it adds a sort of security blanket
My heart hurts so bad watching this because as a dancer myself I know how dancers can be such perfectionists. They probably practiced these dances hundreds of times in preparation, plus years and years of training, and even the ones with small little stumbles probably were so hard on themselves after the performance was over, but amazing job keeping it together and continuing the performance until the curtain dropped, that takes a lot.
Although I know nothing about ballet. I still think it’s a precious dancing style. Ballet gives me such nostalgia, especially the music they use. This reminds me of something I learned that gave me insight into the brilliance of Nijinsky's choreography for the "Rite of Spring" (which you can see reconstructed in a few videos on RUclips). Throughout the ballet he has dancers throw themselves to the ground, and in the sacrificial dance he has the Chosen One hobble about as if with a broken leg, touching on a ballet dancer's worst nightmares. And of course, the Chosen One gets chosen for death because she stumbles in a dance. (I was horrified the first time I saw the reconstructed ballet and learned that she is chose by the other girls!!)
When I was 4 I did ballet and we were dancing at a performance (in front of a lot of people. It was kind of like a competition but we just did it for fun not really to compete) I kicked my foot up for something, and my shoe went flying off. I just kept dancing though 😂
i did ballet for 11 years and i once had a solo, where i forgot the steps for just a few seconds so i just covered up by just dancing a simple step we always did during the warm up and not even my teacher noticed so i was pretty glad i covered up so well xd
In the first clip I have to laugh at the grace and beauty juxtaposed with the sheer rage and panic that probably ensued the second the ballerina got offstage
I have a friend (he transferred schools now) and he showed us (my friends and I) a video of on eof their recitals. The girl who played coppelia fell on her side while running ((?) That was a few months ago). He said that she was crying backstage coz her ribs that hit the floor hurt.
This is amazing!!! They're really the best dancers in the world!!! This made me so happy to watch a more confident about being a ballet dancer despite my tall figure and wide chest
It's kind of funny, I was never particularly interested in classical ballet ( I'm much more into modern dance), but I study Russian language and used the time during lockdown to know more about russian culture, saw a bunch of Bolshoï spectacles online, which led to those kind of suggestions. But despite not specialy liking pointes, I acknowledge the hard work and bad luck, I felt so sorry for the unlucky girl hitting the ground so hard. that could have been very worse and it's a relief to see her continue as if nothing happened. Sheer professionnal. And I'm totally delighted to hear that my level in russian is now good enough to understand the major part of the comment in the first part, and that the dancer himself explain what happened and how he managed to continue performing. Frankly I knew nothing about this man a week ago, but a bunch of videos of his more modern or funny works turned me an instant fan. This prouves that he's not only a talented professionnal, a good actor and funny guy, but also quick and clever. That incident could have ended in a painful way for both dancers if they didn't saw and reacted quickly (I can picture the girl beside the scene, tying anew her shoes as quickly as possible) In the end, this came out as an epic win, instead of an epic fail. Very good job. And listening the audience actually applause their clever solution made me smile. (side thoughts: he's got as a very clear pronounciation, a pleasant laughter, and speaks not too quickly, I should try and listen to some interviews. Since dance is not something I know well, I could learn some new words this way, not only in russian but in my native language as well. Which is not english, so, sorry for the likely errors :D)
@Clarissa Leung thanks for your answer, I'll make sure to check some sources this summer, sounds like interesting and I like theatre a lot. I think that's why so impressed by his acting skills. Plus I've read somewhere that he has got a major injury and used his recovery time to learn french. Which requires an impressive mental strength considering the situation. Very inspiring. I 'm teacher of french for foreigners and this left me thinking " hey, I could actually some day have to give lessons to actors and artists, second good reason to learn specialized vocabulary" :))
1:17 more of a lazy step where a foot is not so up the floor she had to lag a step forward causing her left foot to plant and drag herself onto her right leg landing en demi pointe, thus proceesing back to her routine. I noticed that because this happened to me occasionally.
what i found fascinating is that they just continue the dance after they make a mistake almost creating the illusion that it never happened. especially for the dancer in the red costume where she had a huge fall.
And then you go backstage freaking out because you think everyone saw it and you have a panic attack
Either that or you find out on YT...😆

When I was 4 I did ballet and we were dancing at a performance (in front of a lot of people. It was kind of like a competition but we just did it for fun not really to compete) I kicked my foot up for something, and my shoe went flying off. I just kept dancing though 😂
I love how the first few videos transition so perfectly into each other.
1:53 I felt that! I admire the way she picked herself up smiling broadly,as if nothing had happened!
I didn't even notice the ribbons unlace on the first dancer! How amazingly skilled and professional.
People don’t realise how hard it I actually is to be a ballerina. Like the strength these people have is just amazing
i did ballet for 11 years and i once had a solo, where i forgot the steps for just a few seconds so i just covered up by just dancing a simple step we always did during the warm up and not even my teacher noticed so i was pretty glad i covered up so well xd
As a dancer watching these kinda makes me want to cry from second hand embarassement (and pain), yet the recoveries are always amazing
I love watching videos like this because you see how professional they all are
1:18 and then we have me tripping over the extra space in my jazz shoes and falling off stage
GREAT RECOVERY TO THE FIRST DANCERS !
Well handled.
I really appreciate your spirit. They are human .
This is amazing!!! They're really the best dancers in the world!!! This made me so happy to watch a more confident about being a ballet dancer despite my tall figure and wide chest
There is one where one of the swans in Bolshoi fell in Act 2.
That incident could have ended in a painful way for both dancers if they didn't saw and reacted quickly (I can picture the girl beside the scene, tying anew her shoes as quickly as possible)
In the end, this came out as an epic win, instead of an epic fail.
1:53 my flat chest would probably fall off 💀
these aren't mistakes, these are just accidents...of course they happen to anyone
You’re point is? It’s still a mistake, but an accident too.
Omg would love a dance mom themed video!!🤩
1:17 more of a lazy step where a foot is not so up the floor she had to lag a step forward causing her left foot to plant and drag herself onto her right leg landing en demi pointe, thus proceesing back to her routine. I noticed that because this happened to me occasionally.
what i found fascinating is that they just continue the dance after they make a mistake almost creating the illusion that it never happened. especially for the dancer in the red costume where she had a huge fall.
Remember, kids: “The show must go on!”
one time when i was preforming i was running offstage but then i ran into the wall
That first clip always amazes me-such professionalism 😄 Also like that’s some good improv 😂
They all recover so well
