On the floor of my hens house, I threw some oyster shell, and crushed concrete mixture, from my drive way. I have never had a problem with soft shells. Plus, I let them out to roam free in my fenced back yard. This helps on the feed bill. if they are eating there, they aren't eating feed in the pen.
Glad I came across this because I have 4 hens 1 hen lays great eggs and we have gotten 3 eggs with rubber shells like the video she just started laying so hopefully these will harden up and get better I also put calcium in for them we will see how the next shells come
My new hens did this for weeks. freaky. gave calcium and cut back on table scraps. it finally stopped. plus 100 degree heat didn't help. after trapping 4 skunks. a possum and a racoon helped tremendously.
I have a flock of 65 hens and got my first shell -less egg today, i got 2 fairy eggs aswell the week before. I usually get 60 eggs a day which is a decent %
one of the problems that I had in Southwest Florida was snakes , I used to see documentaries about snakes swallowing whole eggs then regurgitating the shell Unbroken , what I think happens is the acid inside the snake stomach somehow modifies the eggshell calcium from a heart substance to a leather like substance and probably squeeze the egg until it ruptures , inside of the egg would be sucked out like a vacuum with one punch hole in the egg , that being said I'm having soft-shell problem with my ducks in which one duck is laying soft-shelled eggs where ever she feels like without nesting , sometimes there is a gray spot inside the eggyolk which I'm not sure what does it mean at this time .
I have had chickens for many decades. I learned a lot from family and friends and their flock experiences. I have always fed back the used shells to my hens. An accidental drop and crack in the chicken yard is too precious a resource to waste. Here’s some ideas DO set aside shells from used eggs. Wait until the are dry and they will easily crumble. DO feedback eggs which will not pass your perfection test. Maybe it got cracked in the chicken yard, is soft shelled, a bit dirtier than you want to handle. AVOID feeding back anything which visually resembles an egg. Chickens are very intelligent and they look closely at most things. If the little feathered ones can distinguish features of an egg, you may be teaching yours to eat eggs from the laying boxes. When feeding back whole eggs, I beat the egg shell and all until it’s soup, fold in some regular feed and serve as a treat! I hope this is helpful!
ONe of my hens lays an eggless shell every day for a week now, I do give oyster shells mixed in their feed, they are free range, I don't know which hen it is, What do I do?
Hmm got membrane egg again today. Can we use it tho, coz I gave it to my Eel both time. The seller said all 4 Hyline hens were 10 weeks old when v bought them. But all 4 grew out to be at different age stages. now they’re technically 25 weeks old. 1 of the hen looks under weight than other 3 or she’s younger?. But she gives the biggest size eggs at times. So not sure which 1 is laying membrane one’s. I got 2 heritage hens that bully the new hyline hens, but it’s not that bad as before, coz hylines defend for them selves mostly. May be the stress as you said is coz of membrane egg. As it’s a struggle for hyline during roost time, coz heritage pecks them for no reason. Thank u tho for video, as it’s exactly what am trying to figure out. Do u think giving cooked rice with veges or rolled oats at times be reason??? I mean could cooked rice hinder calcium absorption. ??? I’ve reduced now to almost stopping. Liked & subscribed u😊 Tanq & blessings in Christ.
We recently got 5 point of lay chickens and one of them started laying a few days ago she payed two eggs and the third one was shell less I hope it's like you said where she will be back to normal after a few days as her systems havnt stared working fully yet
Hi there, My chicken is been laying shell less egg for the last one month I have been given her lots and lots of oyster shell , Do you think one day it will come back to normal as she looks very healthy eats and drinks normal, I want to know if I should have hope that one day it will come back to normal, The chicken is about 8 months old was laying normal eggs for about two weeks then just this happened
My chicken laid her egg on the floor, she was on the nest but she got off and dropped the egg, she was struggling before. What should I do if it happens again?
I don't know, I give my duck every morning the same food. She made 2 eggs with soft shell, and now she has started again with normal eggs. I don't know what happened. 🤷
I have a set of doves and she had an egg like this. It’s only her second time laying eggs and she had the second set right away so i think she had them too soon. The first brood of babies died and a week later she had two more. So I think it was just too fast
I need your opinion about a similar problem. I bought a hen in Nov-2014. I guess she is about 2-3 years old. She was laying before I bought it and continues to lay till now. She had an accident about 2 months ago which temporarily affected her foot only. She decreased the quantity of the maximum amount of food after that accident but always ate regularly. Egg size and routine never changed so her weight decreased. Now she is laying shell-less eggs since last three days which break when she lays. She never even tried to taste her egg so I think that the membrane breaks naturally. She ALWAYS lays such eggs on unexpected timings and continues to sit in the nest on her regular egg timing each day without laying any sort of egg (not broody for sure). Today she looked very sick before laying egg and uninterested in eating but after laying shell-less egg, her behavior and eating was perfectly normal. There is another thing about her that I want to tell you. She was living very happily after that accident in the coop with another hen and one rooster. Both were dominant over her. Then I bought two more hens two weeks ago. She suppressed new girls; in-fact she is very cruel with them. I have two nests but all like to go in the same nest. Few days ago when she came to lay in her nest she found the other older hen in the nest. She did not even sit in the nest due to jealousy/anger! The very next day she found the new hen in the bed-room near nesting box when she came to lay. I am sure from her "expressions" that she has realized that the new girl has laid her first egg in the same nest so again she did not like to sit in the nest. She laid on the 3rd day and may be on the 4th, 5th,6th day. But now she is laying shell-less eggs since last 3 days on unusual time due to stress??? Her sitting in the nest on the usual expected time indicates that relevant hormones are ok.
I have a hen laying these eggs. She's been laying for almost 3 months just fine, so I think she's stressed about the rooster she's living with, but not sure. I'm trying to give him away, but no one wants a roo.
Please help- eggy yolk dropped from my chicken's vent just now when I was holding it. I didn't see any shell that came with it, but there was a soft white thing that looked like the white part of a boiled egg (except it wasn't boiled). Now my chicken refuses to eat and is just laying down in a dark corner. I brought her inside the house but it seems like she is breathing fairly hard. The feathers near her vent seem to be standing on end. Soo scared that my chicken still has part of shell inside her and will die! Had anyone every had this problem before? Please help me! I am so scared :(

I just thought one of my chickens was transgender or something because I have a rooster that won't crow or have sexual intercourse with any of the hens...
I just got my first shell less egg today. They just started laying. So thank you for sharing.

In past people used to gave their hen lime water to solve this problem, but not sure whether it works or not.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. So much I didn't know about chickens & eggs. So I suppose the egg taste the same if it's shell-less?

How did I get here from nail tutorials...

Great explanation!!
I have had chickens for many decades. I learned a lot from family and friends and their flock experiences. I have always fed back the used shells to my hens. An accidental drop and crack in the chicken yard is too precious a resource to waste.
Here’s some ideas
DO set aside shells from used eggs.
I cook this before feeding back. Boiled and crushed or scrambled they love it!
thank you! That helps a lot.
ONe of my hens lays an eggless shell every day for a week now, I do give oyster shells mixed in their feed, they are free range, I don't know which hen it is, What do I do?

I have a set of doves and she had an egg like this. It’s only her second time laying eggs and she had the second set right away so i think she had them too soon. The first brood of babies died and a week later she had two more. So I think it was just too fast
Yes, I think it’s not uncommon for a new layer.
Is the non-she'll egg safe to eat?
*shell (darn spell checker)
Idk
Yes

This shell-less eggs might have a marketable value. I don't like to peel eggs.
I have a new young 4 month old layer we are seeing this
Riverunner Me too!
Dallas Alice ....I’m pretty sure it resolved itself
Riverunner Oh, good. It’s kind of been freaking me out.
Dallas Alice defiantly it does I did add in oyster shell. I don’t add them in the food it has to be given separately.
Riverunner Great! I just bought some of that.
I just thought one of my chickens was transgender or something because I have a rooster that won't crow or have sexual intercourse with any of the hens...
Lmfao
The egg is so squishy!!
