- An interview with Clive Kavan about how he published the 1985 Regulus edition of William Lilly's book Christian Astrology, which helped to spur the revival of traditional astrology in modern times.
Lilly's book Christian Astrology was originally published in 1647, and it was the first major textbook astrology written in English, because prior to that time most astrological texts were written in Latin.
Lilly himself drew on a wide variety of different Hellenistic, Medieval, and Renaissance sources, and his book became very influential to subsequent generations of astrologers in the English-speaking world.
The book was not widely available in its original form for most of the 20th century though, and that is why the publication of the Regulus edition of Lilly in 1985 was important.
The Regulus edition made the earliest English-language textbook on astrology widely available again, helped re-popularize the practice of horary astrology, and also eventually helped contribute to a wider revival of interest in older or more traditional forms of astrology that has expanded even more in recent years.
I met Clive by chance at a pub the first night I flew into London, where a group of astrologers were hanging out after the Monday night meeting of the Astrological Lodge. Someone told me that he had published the Regulus edition of Lilly, and after asking him some questions about how that came about, I knew I had to get this interview with him to capture some of this important history.
The interview was conducted on June 18, 2019 in the research library at the Theosophical Lodge of London, where the Astrological Lodge of London meets each week since 1915.

Clive Kavan and Chris Brennan -- what would the world be without people ike yourselves?! These stories here are so endearing, funny, inspiring. Personally, I came very reluctantly and very skeptically into the study of this subject. Of course, that means by now I am one of the most in awe and humbled participants. I find this entire interview so amazing : first of all that this interview even exists available freely to the public (CHRIS BRENNAN THANK YOU), to be able to hear the stories behind the quest to publish Lilly's book again (CLIVE KAVAN THANK YOU). Bear hugs to both of you guys. As Clive says, when knowledge is real and useful, then the most important thing to do it to treat it with that sacred attitude and share it widely ! ( Not hoard it for ego puffery )
Thank you Clive for all that you have done...I totally agree, knowledge should be shared,or what is the point .x
Amazing! I'm a QHP tutored by Olivia Barclay, and have two copies of Christian Astrology. One for reading, and one for my archives. Blood and tears to get, and blood and tears to study :) Thank you for bringing back memories of Olivia. Visited her once in 1989. Bless her!
Great interview! Thanks. And thanks to Clive Kavan for all that he has done! What a sense of service (maybe soudns weird,I'm translating literally from Spanish!).
What a great story and those little things that help astrology along. Bravo Clive!
This interview was amazing ✨🙏🏽🎆
What a beautiful copy. And you got to touch it! ;) £200 in 1979 would be about £1100/€1100/US$1300 current times (adjusting for inflation).
That was a work of love.
thanx
37:26 - 38:15 Someone of crystal clear values !! Making one of the most salient points of this interview....(Besides perhaps his purposeful, pointed suggestion that it's time already to publish the Gadbury "Doctrine of Nativities". ) This man probably needs some Ascendant rectification, he's far too understated and sensible in the way he puts it....He couldnt possibly be a 2 degree Aquarian (LOL, just spoofing my own Moon Degree). But really honestly, this person has to have Jupiter on his Ascendant. Nothing could be more apparent and clearly broadcast.
42:00 And the sad irony is, the Chris Brennan of today could have been the right person to translate the Gadbury for Regulus Publishing of the 1980s.
Where can I get a copy??
Most astrology is personality-based. The new astrology is Esoteric or Soul-Centered Astrology. This is for the increasing number of people who are becoming more conscious and aspire and work towards Soul alignment. The Soul is the Christ within, the mediator or middle, relating principle, between Spirit and matter. The Ageless Wisdom Teachings, written by Alice Bailey and Djwhal Khul, explain this in the book, "Esoteric Astrology" and in their other books, published by the The Lucis Press/Lucis Publishing Company. For those who are Soul-inclined, personality-centered astrology does not always work for them. Esoteric astrology focuses on the Ascendant as the Soul purpose. It is inclusive but also adds a different dimension to understanding and interpretation. In my library I have a wonderful book named, "Soul-Centered Astrology," written by Alan Oken, recently deceased. There are other books written on this astrology for the New Aquarian Age by a number of authors, and workshops and courses offered.
In Light, Love and Goodwill.
@barnowl5774 , Chris did a whole episode on the life and work of Alan Oken and interviewed him in episode 223.
Keep away from these guys Christian's.
Totally deceptive.
