  • Shadow World by Mike Potter is one of several excellent games released by Synapse Software for Atari 8-bit in the early 1980s. An excellent showcase of the Atari 8-bit's gaming chops thanks to its speedy smooth scrolling and myriad on-screen enemies, it's an entertaining twist on the Defender formula and a stiff challenge for shoot 'em up fans. Played here on The400 Mini.
Note: Shadow World's original release crashes on anything other than a 400 or 800 (or an emulator running in one of those modes). A fixed version of Shadow World for XL/XE computers can be found here: atarionline.pl...

Anyway, I had a lot of Synapse games. Much like JD Casten at ANTIC, I’d consider Mike Potter (along with the late Bill Williams) to be one of the company’s star programmers - and Synapse was one of the best game companies on the A8.

Great video. Definitely a very interesting and cool game. I can see how you got into it as a kid as it has a good blend of action and explosions. In the meantime, take care and I look forward to many more explorations into the A8's game library soon enough.

The amount of stuff on screen is quite impressive.

On my copy, the amount of stuff on screen sometimes crashed my computer.

@DownHomeGamer It doesn't like the XL and XE's revision of the OS, so crashes after playing a little while on them regardless of stuff on screen. Works fine on a 400/800, and a community member made a patched version a while back that plays nice with XL/XE - link in the description.
