In this video I am beating around the bush enough to turn 3 simple steps into a 15 min video: 1. Make HV Converter 2. Add transistors 3. Cut jumper link
In my defense, the high voltage DC-DC converter is almost entirely made of standard parts and performs very well. It could be used in many other applications.
Tinkering inside a sensitive instrument like this is questionable but in this case the output stage and precision stuff are neatly separated, so I feel confident enough.
Some newer photos on the eevblog forum show that those thin output cables are the same in 'genuine' 237s. So no more changes required.
All files I gathered for this project: drive.google.com/file/d/0B6S_...
The circuit simulator I used: www.falstad.com/circuit/

The subtle puns and silly humour make your videos one of the most entertaining ones all-around, at least in my opinion.
    Keep it up.

    Marco:
Your videos are truly excellent. Not only do you continue to exhibit your sly, understated German humor seen throughout your videos but you additionally have excellent staging, editing, and post skills to complement the great source material. Plus, you have excellent taste in instruments!
Keep up the good work. If you continue down this path you'll be rolling in the Patreon bucks (if so desired) and producing excellent material for decades of engineers to come.

And he made all the files that he worked hours on public. I just imported the schematic into easyeda and im learning a ton. Knowledge is absolutely priceless. He inspired me and yesterday I ordered my first keithley, its a bench multimeter and the only reason why I bought it was because of how much he made me love those beautiful pieces of equipment. His videos are some of the only ones that I can watch many times without getting bored!

      It's surprisingly easy.
There are calculator apps (for PC/maybe JS-based for browser usage) that handle ferrite and metal powder ring core inductors, Reichelt has the parts, and transformers aren't difficult either, as long as you stick to 3-digit volts (above those, you need to be careful and often need to apply extra insulation between layers, along with saturating it in resin or transformer oil for isolation).

Hello Marco, great video!. I plan to upgrade my 236 as well, I have checked the service manual and it looks like there is a high voltage diode (HV-15) which is certainly obsolete. Did you manage to get specifications for this part in order to know how to replace it? Does the upgrade work fine still today? Regards!

Wonderful job as always! Just a quick question…
Why do jumpers have ceramic around them sometimes? I notice that in most test gear and industrial circuit boards I work on. All the jumpers have that white ceramic.
    Just curious.
    Thanks for your time.

I buy one 237 on ebay, defect, i check and is HV cable between psu and board, the cable touch the instrument top cover and after many year, the isolant of one wire fail!
I clean, put protective plastique tube on 3 wire, now is work great!!!
Nice instrument to have, very useful.

Very nice job! There seems to be a mistake on the schematic, however. With such polarities of gate drive transformer windings, both mosfets of the half-bridge will turn on at the same time. Also, the crystallic stuff you get as an etching byproduct is probably CuSO4, in which case it can be reused for etching in a CuSO4 + NaCl solution. 2 table spoons of salt and 1 table spoon of blue stuff per 200ml of hot water. Please note, that this method is rather slow, especially if the solution gets cold.

    • @leocurious9919

CuSO4 + NaCl? How is that supposed to etch copper? What is the oxidizer (electron acceptor)?

As someone who owns two Keithley 238s, I am wondering if there is a more cost-effective way to update my firmware from A06 to A10. For me, the hardware needed to flash and re-wire the chips is quite unrealistic when all my other hardware is brand new. Does anyone know someone that can do the firmware upgrade for a price?
