In this video I am beating around the bush enough to turn 3 simple steps into a 15 min video: 1. Make HV Converter 2. Add transistors 3. Cut jumper link
In my defense, the high voltage DC-DC converter is almost entirely made of standard parts and performs very well. It could be used in many other applications.
Tinkering inside a sensitive instrument like this is questionable but in this case the output stage and precision stuff are neatly separated, so I feel confident enough.
Some newer photos on the eevblog forum show that those thin output cables are the same in 'genuine' 237s. So no more changes required.
All files I gathered for this project: drive.google.com/file/d/0B6S_...
The circuit simulator I used: www.falstad.com/circuit/
The subtle puns and silly humour make your videos one of the most entertaining ones all-around, at least in my opinion.
Keep it up.
_Place a dispenser here!_
Just watched this with my husband who supports you on Patreon... you make this very interesting to watch with your subtle humor and easy to follow instructions. Vielen Danke!!
Marco:
Your videos are truly excellent. Not only do you continue to exhibit your sly, understated German humor seen throughout your videos but you additionally have excellent staging, editing, and post skills to complement the great source material. Plus, you have excellent taste in instruments!
Keep up the good work. If you continue down this path you'll be rolling in the Patreon bucks (if so desired) and producing excellent material for decades of engineers to come.
And he made all the files that he worked hours on public. I just imported the schematic into easyeda and im learning a ton. Knowledge is absolutely priceless. He inspired me and yesterday I ordered my first keithley, its a bench multimeter and the only reason why I bought it was because of how much he made me love those beautiful pieces of equipment. His videos are some of the only ones that I can watch many times without getting bored!
Dejavu: i believe i have seen this video about a year ago, without a slight idea of what i'm watching and what for. Well, now i watch it and i don't have any idea of what is being done but i love the way it's presented.
Very satisfying, and having that kind of capability on your desk is definitely handy and quite unique, without spending a lot of money on a modern equivalent.
Sure, everyone just winds his own inductors and transformers at home as needed...
Great work and entertaining video, as usual ;-)
It's surprisingly easy.
There are calculator apps (for PC/maybe JS-based for browser usage) that handle ferrite and metal powder ring core inductors, Reichelt has the parts, and transformers aren't difficult either, as long as you stick to 3-digit volts (above those, you need to be careful and often need to apply extra insulation between layers, along with saturating it in resin or transformer oil for isolation).
Entertaining, loved the pops when putting caps in the board, you make very good videos!
Loved the explanations, and the humor, as always, thank you.
Great project ! I can not understand how somebody can give it thumbs down.
These Keithley instruments are true electronics art. Love these videos but I am afraid the vintage Keithley bug is highly addictive.
I agree, he got me so obsessed with them i bought one yesterday :D
I just discovered your channel. You make great and entertaining videos. Nice to see a great German electronics youtuber. I hope to see more videos of you, meanwhile I will see trough your older videos.
Grüße aus Sachsen
Michael
Don't dig too deeply, everything earlier than the laser printer is 100% cringy
Really nice Project!!
Huhu :)
i like your style of making videos! great work! wirklich nett gemacht!
Danke :)
Not only the style. Also the projects themselves.
My new favorite channel
Nice work on those REPS labels
Very impressing work.
Класс, спасибо :) Another funny great vid. Wish to see longer version too, though ! :D
An amazing project!
I love your workshop 😍
Very impressed by your work! Subcribed
Love that stuff good work man
I watched a lot of your videos even though I don't quite understand something. But your knowledge is remarkable. How did you get it? Are you an electronics technician?
Inspiring work!
Nice work.
Your knowledge level is realy high
this is an amazing video, thank you!
I love your videos! you are so good at doing them. Anyway... i use isopropyl alcohol for cleaning flux, in my opinion is better than acetone.
Inspirational build. Thank you.
Hello Marco, great video!. I plan to upgrade my 236 as well, I have checked the service manual and it looks like there is a high voltage diode (HV-15) which is certainly obsolete. Did you manage to get specifications for this part in order to know how to replace it? Does the upgrade work fine still today? Regards!
Wonderful job as always! Just a quick question…
Why do jumpers have ceramic around them sometimes? I notice that in most test gear and industrial circuit boards I work on. All the jumpers have that white ceramic.
Just curious.
Thanks for your time.
I buy one 237 on ebay, defect, i check and is HV cable between psu and board, the cable touch the instrument top cover and after many year, the isolant of one wire fail!
I clean, put protective plastique tube on 3 wire, now is work great!!!
Nice instrument to have, very useful.
I love old Keithley serie, this video is reference for this models.
Thanks.
1:07 I had some UV filter goggles. No problem.
damn, was I not suposed to look at it? :D
Very nice job! There seems to be a mistake on the schematic, however. With such polarities of gate drive transformer windings, both mosfets of the half-bridge will turn on at the same time. Also, the crystallic stuff you get as an etching byproduct is probably CuSO4, in which case it can be reused for etching in a CuSO4 + NaCl solution. 2 table spoons of salt and 1 table spoon of blue stuff per 200ml of hot water. Please note, that this method is rather slow, especially if the solution gets cold.
CuSO4 + NaCl? How is that supposed to etch copper? What is the oxidizer (electron acceptor)?
Very nice!
I don't have a Keithley anything but I'm tempted to build up one of these boards into a HV bench supply, seems like a very robust design.
was not expecting to see The Engineer from TF2 to be here lol.
ohhh Marco Reps you are listening to Aurora! I love her songs, and she is so wonderfull and unique person!
Engineering intensifies
MMmmmm
7:00 Ich mag Deinen Humor - nicht damit aufhören, ja!
You are amazing...thanks...
Question. I just purchased a Keithley 236, and I would like to know if the fan in your 236 turns on when you first power up the 236. I ordered service manuals. Also, something smells a little warm in my 236. Best Wishes and stay safe!
Excellent.
Marco = genius
i believe the blue substance left after etching is copper sulfate.
Das gute alte RRZN Latex Handbuch. Bist du von der Luh?
Hey, I see that you use bungard pcb, can you share your setup for developing of uv mask? I spent around 10 failed attempts and I am out of ideas. I am asking for uv exposure process and which developer do you use. Do you have any video about?
4:50 Which program do you use for those simulations?
www.falstad.com/circuit/
Show us how to reduce it with steel wool please!
you are sooo cool , thank you for this video. boooooooooM thankhyou.
"ACish" - Marco Reps
Welches Program hast du für diese Simulation genutzt ?
www.falstad.com/circuit/
What kind of power supply is that? The one with the brightly colored dials. It looks quite spiffy!
Oltronix B703, made a video about it a while ago
What are you studying in Uni?
Could you explain the steel wool topic a bit more in detail? Thanks
web.archive.org/web/20090907183632/www.tuf-ev.de/workshop/aetzen/EntsorgungAetzen.htm Can be done without PH adjustment and when letting it sit over night, no ammonia test should be required.
Wow!... Nice piece of reverse engineering!... You have earned not only both my respect and a like on this video... but a subscriber as well,!... Greetings from Canada!...
As someone who owns two Keithley 238s, I am wondering if there is a more cost-effective way to update my firmware from A06 to A10. For me, the hardware needed to flash and re-wire the chips is quite unrealistic when all my other hardware is brand new. Does anyone know someone that can do the firmware upgrade for a price?
Macro Reps, can you please tell me what the model number is for your 236/7-801-* chip is? The one I have is covered with the firmware label and I don't want to risk erasing the firmware. Thanks!
the white plastic that you put under the pcb is teflon?where did you get it?
eBay! Surprisingly cheap, also sold as PTFE
i see.well i had trouble buying shit on ebay since im in romania and shipping costs an arm and a dick.
an arm and a dick? how that?
👍👍
Was that Aurora on the video @ 4:17? I love you even more now
Yes, was absolutely obsessed with her at the time and still am a bit :)
I love watching your videos. But you make me feel completely inadequate as an EE.
Howd you learn all this stuff
Well I've been to a few electronic engineering lectures in university, but what I learnt there is mostly maths. What I showed here is mostly a rearrangement of information I gathered in around the internet.
Marco Reps i took principles of technology and electronics 1and 2 in the mid 90's but circuit board development was never covered
flyback noise made it into the audio a bunch. beginning was tough to hear :p
*E.A.G.L.E FTW*
nice m'era luna shirt
Haven't been there in a while, anything worth seeing this year?
wouldnt know, dont have the cash to go this year
Three people in the world have done this, but 14k have seen it.
Studying to be a graphic designer?
Erase those EPROM and kill bacterias on my dirty sink. Much cheaper at aquarium store than memory store.
Macro the Keithley High priest....
First again?Maybe all your subs are playing dota?
I like to include voice samples from Dota occasionally (that grunting and happily grunting engineer for example) and I never get any reactions on that, so I don't think that that's the case :)
Haven't watched the video yet, having it on pause in the intro.Does dickbutt appears?if he doesn't it need more dickbutt.
This is a whole new level of piracy.
Excellent.
