- Nate Champion (Christopher Walken) goes out guns a-blazing in this scene from Michael Cimino's misunderstood masterpiece, "Heaven's Gate". With Sam Waterston, Mickey Rourke, Isabelle Hupert, Ronnie Hawkins and Geoffrey Lewis
Champion’s last stand is my favorite part of the movie, it’s so well made, I cried when I saw him dying, Christopher Walken is amazing
Why does Champion get gunned down by his own men?
@@eronifitiao6660 Because he decided to stand up for the immigrants that were set to be eliminated, and especially because he was in love with one of them.
Nate Champion was neither a cattle rustler nor a hired killer. He was a legitimate rancher and a brave man.
That explains a lot about his character and why Jim would be his friend.
Not the usual role for Sam Waterston, but he was a very effective villain.
IMO this shootouts of 40 years ago were better done than they do today! Brutal and realistic without CGI.
That’s because they used horse blood, blown up a horse, killed many horse, disembowelled cows.
Christopher Walken notorious hated guns - this must have been torture.
Every frame on this movie is almost or perfect.
Thats also a movie making technique, where "every frame is a picture and tells a story".
If it just admitted it was a western it might have worked. Mostly it was boring. John Hurt's character was actually anoing
Fascinating how most of them are using 1860 Henry repeating rifles. Presumably with the 44. Henry round. I liked the film. Truly classic material.
The movie deals with the origin of a Nation, that persists today, that deals with great contrasts: University, big city, normal life...but in appearence...then violence, guns, shooting and cruel murdering...all in a context of a beautiful nature background of the Wyoming.
Filmed in Montana
Christopher Walken never dies in a boring way in movies! 😂
Again, my thanks for posting this scene.
It made me cry that I saw him dying
5:00
And I thought James Caan’s Causeway Kooky Dance was over the top……….
4:57 I think you got him...
Like Sonny Corleone!
One of the few scenes actually based on real events
Cult Classic! In my Book.
4:54 Scarface, who?
I take you all to fucking hell!
please, bring the full movie in hd format, let us allow to know the past of our country
Criterion put out a Digitally remastered Blu Ray a couple years ago.
Are you on drugs?
4:57 damn that they went full on Sonny Corleone on his ass!!!
sad that this film was so misunderstood when it came out. over indulgent at points, but it's not a bad film, and sad that it essentially ruined someone's career, think about the great films we never got because of this film's production.
That's for the best. If you hafta kill multiple animals to make a film, you shouldnt be allowed to make films.
Frankly, anyone who has to reshoot a scene 50 times is an idiot.
Honestly Cimino did it to himself by being so obsessed with details and being perfectionist, skyrocketing the budget and bankrupting United Artists. The movie may be good or not, but you can't deny Cimino's perfectionism was responsible for why the movies are so different nowadays
The editing is what destroys this film, for me.
@@johnwayne9828It actually has been debunked. The only animal that got killed was the horse that blew up, but that was an accident
2:05 :What did he think would happen?
I’m glad I’m not the only one wondering.
Brutal
So many animals were abused and killed during the filming
One was accidentally killed, according to Elton’s biography of Cimino. Otherwise, the violent scenes were very well-controlled. Rumors spread like wildfire late in production by people who wanted to cash in on the film’s publicity about Cimino being nuts.
Your mother was killed during the filming.
@@vulteiuscatellus4105four horses were also bled without pain killers. imagine being cut at the throat and left to bleed
@@spicytrash4981wish yours was
@@honeyimhomewhoop That’s unsubstantiated AFAICS.
Why isn't this movie more popular
Charles Hemphill it was original like 5 hours long. The director was forced to cut it down to 3.5 hours, which resulted in it making absolutely no sense lol. It also gets a lot of shit cuz the crew accidentally blew up a horse while filming.
@@williamchisholm3562 And it took **so** long that John Hurt was able to film "The Elephant Man" between the times they needed him to film for this. And it cost, like, all the money to make.
Actually it was cut to 149 minutes (2 hours and I don't know how many minutes) for theater releases.
They blew up a horse that's super cool man I bet that horsey is famous too
@@williamchisholm3562 It wasn't accidental, I believe
masterpiece of american cinema
So no one's going to mention John Marston?
4:54 - That had to be the main inspiration for the ending of Red Dead 1. It's too similar not to be. 🤠
Exactly what I thought
3:28
i told you put that 🚬 out... 💥
Is that Mickey Rourke at 3:28?
Yes.
After seven years the suspense must have been getting to you. LOL.
I want to sleep with the Kris Kristofferson character lol!
Nate Champion walked so John Marston could run
Holy Ess is that chris walken?
Tyler Sistrunk yup
Respsect to Nate Champion, His Brother and Ella Watson! I hate those Cowerd Yellos Frank Clanton and his "pissed Mob"!! Boy did Cimino CHANGE the color in his final Director's Cut. The original color version - seen here here in this sequence - cannot be seen anywhere anymore.
No. These colors are wrong. I’ve seen the unrestored shortened version on a French DVD and there’s no overpowering sepia tint.
Here dies a man. Innocent.
So sad that real horses got killed in this :(
Different time I guess.
How do you know they were real? It was never proven that they actually died. Wikipedia says...
"The film was marred by accusations of cruelty to animals during production. One assertion was that live horses were bled from the neck without giving them pain-killers so that their blood could be collected and smeared upon the actors in a scene. The American Humane Association (AHA) asserted that four horses were killed and many more injured during a battle scene. It was claimed that one of the horses was blown up by dynamite. This footage appears in the final cut of the film.
The AHA was barred from monitoring the animal action on the set. According to the AHA, the owner of an abused horse filed a lawsuit against the producers, director, Partisan Productions, and the horse wrangler. The owner cited wrongful injury and breach of contract for willfully depriving her Arabian gelding of proper care. The suit cited "the severe physical and behavioral trauma and disfigurement" of the horse. The case was settled out of court."
@@Matthew-Anthony What do you mean? Why would you think it's not true? It's on imdb under the trivia section. Chickens were also killed in cockfights in the film as well. The animal cruelty in the film is factual from everything I've read, especially for the reasons you listed.
@@Matthew-Anthony it's actually proven Smart one

Smart one.
This is hilarious.
At 4:29 champion has the scarf on, at 4:39 it’s gone
Presumably he took it off because, you know… his cabin is catching fire.
The only good part of the movie, also the only part that actually happened
Multiple animals died and were injured as well as people to make this pos
Your mother died making this pos
lost there lives for a shitty movie.
"Misunderstood masterpiece"?!!! You cannot be serious. It's a train wreck.
FWIW, it has its moments but “Heaven’s Gate” will forever be remembered as the ultimate cautionary tale for any studio that might consider giving carte blanche to an auteur.
They must have all been useing 9mm he would of went down with one shot from my 45acp
I hope you realise just how much of a dork you sound.
Holy fuck !
I ain’t gonna lie but this film is actually kinda a guilty pleasure when it comes western films.
Yes it’s too long. Yes the production history behind it is... quite disturbing. But other than that I actually still love this western film despite it’s main problems.
May Clint Eastwood shoot me if I’m wrong.🏜🤠
You’re not wrong, Vilmos Zsigmond’s cinematography presents some of the greatest photography of any 20th century film. And what about Ella and Jim’s dance OK it doesn’t advance the story but who cares it shows how much they are in love.
