Disgusting but not surprising in the slightest. Police as a whole may be good and trying to do their job but police like these two, and especially more commonly in the united states, police abuse their power and have zero fear for even the concept of repercussions because even when they are obviously in the wrong they know that a corrupt system will still protect them.

It’s interesting that she claimed she thought he was carrying a gun but didn’t relieve him of his “weapon” right away as any reasonable PO would do, but instead waited until he was getting into her vehicle and realized that he wasn’t going to be able to sit down with it still attached to him.
When the Sheriff decided not to fire those corrupt deputies he lost all credibility. This man spent 26 hours of his life in a jail cell for the crime of being legally blind. The people of Columbia County need a new sheriff.
He will eventually have to fire them because they cannot be effective officers and the town that they're in they are infamous. And every arrest they make will be challenged from here on out. Every court appearance where these officers will need to testify the fact that she confessed to being a tyrant will be brought up.

The fact Deputy Gohde lied on her arrest report and her Sergeant signed it should be reason enough for them both being fired and prosecuted. There can’t be no excuse ever for such behaviour to go unpunished. She stated she didn’t find out it was a walking stick until “after” the arrest was made.
News flash they all lie to score a quick bust. I got chased and cornered in a road rage incident and drew a firearm cause I had a car pointed at me. The crazy bitch who chased me did so with a 1 year old in her car ( which I didn’t know about). For this I was arrested, the police lied about me making a statement ( a right I was denied). I got booked and had to post 2500 bond to get out of jail. Then I spent the next 3 months with the sword of Damocles over my head. They hit me for 2 years probation and took my permit and my gun. I accepted the ARD offer cause I didn’t have the money to take it to trial. Slow I ended up with 2 years probation cause I was chased down. May the crazy bitch chase the wrong person one day and may the cops try to arrest someone with enough money to destroy them one day. This is what happens when you let bullies and losers be cops, this is why qualified immunity needs to end, so citizens can sue police when they screw up
The sad reality is that lying is an integral part of policing these days. Cops were allowed to lie during interrogations, and that led to them feeling allowed to lie in ALL aspects of doing their job. How much criminality and abuse of citizens' civil rights must occur before real action is taken to REFORM police departments in the USA? When will fascist Republicans get out of the way and allow this reform to occur? Higher standards & vetting of police candidates. Higher pay. Better training and police education. Impose real accountability for unethical and criminal behavior by police. Lawsuit payouts taken from police pension funds, not from taxpayers' pockets. Police will start "policing" each other vs covering up for each other's bad behavior. Neutralize police "unions" aka criminal KKK syndicate protecting criminal cops. Have police forces represent their communities with a diverse force. Hold regular community - police meetings where concerns can be discussed and they can feel like they are on the same team instead of opposing forces. Help good, honest, brave police officers do their job without pressure to uphold the"thin blue line" of corruption. Restore dignity and respect to the profession. These are not unattainable goals. They aren't that difficult! Blindly paying out lawsuits with taxpayer $$, relocating bad cops and wiping cops disciplinary records after 5 years is just a replica of how the Catholic Church has handled its pedophile priests.
@Alusky Stop and ID under reasonable suspicion. The moment they found it was a cane instead of a gun that suspicion was GONE. Notice they asked for ID after the fact.
Her "investigation" ended the moment she walked up and saw that it was a cane. At that point, there was no need to bother the man for his ID, let alone arrest him. This lady had it out for this guy because he dared to talk to her without absolute fear, or reverence.
No, the cop did *NOT* think it was a gun. The cop just wanted to find the slightest meaningless excuse to arrest the man, because those fvck!ng police have to make their *QUOTA* of arrests, fines, tickets, citations, etc. What idiot invented that system? A cop with any integrity would not use such a stupid excuse. IN FACT, a person with any integrity would leave the police force after a short time, having seen what they are expected to do.

Agreed! Unfortunately, those cops won’t pay a cent out of their own pockets because of a) qualified immunity, and b) even if they lose, it’s still the taxpayers of that county who’ll pay the settlement.
The scary thing is that before cops were forced to wear bodycams recording their words and actions, things like this happened and happened a lot, but the victims could never prove it. And when these cops were harassing and arresting Mr. Hodges, they KNEW it was being recorded, but they did it anyway.
Probably figured their department would help them cover up their mistake by conveniently losing the video. Or secure the video, requiring an NDA to view it, like they did with the Uvalde shooting video.

In fact they even say something to this effect. This is a blatant misuse of authority and the worst thing about the whole incident.
It's true! A good officer would be HAPPY to share their name and badge number with anyone who asks.
"Put aside the legalities and he has a very good case?"
That's like saying, "Ignore the fruit and you have a good orange."
@@thepubliusproject You misread what Glenn wrote. Glenn wrote "put aside the legalites THOUGH note that he has a very good case". In other words, totally apart from the fact that the legalities mean he has a good case, it's obvious the Sheriff was clearly only arresting him as retribution for seeking to file a complaint.
@@calliarcale okay, but that's like saying "Take aside the sun, it sure is bright outside today." - I mean, they can't really be separated.

This woman needs to be fired immediately. It’s ridiculous she is costing taxpayers money because her ego was hurt.
The deputy did not think it was a gun. If she's seriously believed he had a gun in his pocket is that her style of Engagement endangered herself and other officers. If she didn't think it was a gun then her style of Engagement is exactly as she described it she is a tyrant and should be fired from the police force because she does not have the personality capable of serving the public it's only a matter of time before she gets someone killed
No, she has been educated to turn her bodycam off.....like her sargeant, who apparently never had one on. That will be the next step for her.
Arrested for not giving them respect. They don’t deserve respect.
Respect is earned

@@ImOwenWilson Exactly right. And they didn't earn it.
@Aluzky Pretty sure you don't know your stuff, you can't stop and id someone that has committed no crime, ever heard of reasonable suspicion.
If you have to demand respect, you are probably getting the level of respect you deserve.
You don't *demand* respect, you *earn* it.
Got a bad situation but want it worse? Simply call a cop.

UNFORTUNATELY TRUE .
100% TRUE!!!
Well... this is an ignorant blanket statement follwed by more like it...
What one suspects is not justification for detention and physical restraint.
Saw this story and it’s still absolutely a disgusting abuse of power. Good on Mr Hodges for suing and I wish him the best of luck.
@Aluzky seriously? Arresting a legally blind man with a folded up cane because they “thought it was a gun” yeah right. I would defend the cops if they were in the right but the body cams don’t lie the 2 cops should have been sacked. The gent involved should have been checked out and allowed to carry on with his day as he did nothing wrong.
@Aluzky really think you need to watch the video again although he was asked to produce ID under Florida law it was an unlawful request as he wasn’t under suspicion of a crime and the fact that he was illegally detained but NOT charged is the abuse of power I’m talking about. Now if the 2 cops had been correct in their actions why has the Sheriff’s Department removed both from duty and why would the gent even have the right to take out a lawsuit? Like it or not it was wrongful arrest.
The moment they discovered that it wasn't a gun, they were obligated to let him go. The fact that they locked him up, even after determining there was no gun, is a sign that the entire department is corrupt and needs to be closely scrutinized.
it was (and always has been) about checking id to check for warrants to collect money...the police want your id, and if you do not give them the id so they can figure out if you owe money things can get serious pretty fast.
How about changing your chain of thought. These people are stressed and pressurised every day and maybe made a small mistake ? 🤷♂️
@@terryduckworth5105 There is a moment when you are faced with the reality that you messed up. You are morally obligated to acknowledge the mistake and do what you can to make it right. They knew the moment they saw it was a cane that they had made a mistake, but instead of doing the right thing, they made it WAY worse by locking him up anyway. There is no justification for this. The fact the he is also a blind man and they CHOSE to abuse him, and his rights, is criminal.
I hope he wins the lawsuit , the way the officers treated this man in that video was discusting . Bravo for him standing up for himself
First off, the POS cop lied about the incident. Also, her supervisor is the one who arrested this man. They both should face charges: Deprivation of rights under color of law.
And he will win. MAKE COPS PAY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS.
The county will probably settle before it ever sees a courtroom and the cops won't personally pay.
I would like to see settlements paid out of the police pension fund. Hit them where it really hurts. We would then see incidents like this disappear overnight.
@@christopheraaron8299 The taxpayers will be paying.
out of the tax payers pockets. best scenario are they all get fired and can NOT be hired anywhere
@@Moderncatlife No doubt about that.
When are they going to start taking judgements out of the pension fund? That should get cops to clean up their own trash
This will never stop as long as you give immunity from prosecution to selected perpetrators.
This should be the top comment, there would be more accountability if we got rid of qualified immunity for sure.
the man who acts sometimes as a police officer doesnt have immunity; the costume does. immunity also is not applicable once a man unlawfully extends his authority and steps into trespass territory.
if a man does this to you, you can press a claim of trespass against the man in a court of law and he will he liable, if the court agrees with you, the man must pay up
I agree Pete.

Perhaps the solution to this mess is that we all just "Say No" , not participate in this, and do not comply.
In order for this to be effective we all must come together as a united people.
Can we do this?
What you missed was the cops saying they were going to let him go. Then he says he intends to file a complaint. Once he says that they say they chose to arrest him for resisting arrest. Pretty key detail
People keep skipping over that part. They literally took an innocent man to jail because they didn’t like him. So many cops were complicit here, doesn’t make me feel like there’s a few bad apples. Makes me feel like they’re all used to doing this shit.
He did not have to cow toe to the deputies, he was Not committing any crime and did not have any weapon, and he can say what ever he pleases under free speech, they already broke the law by detaining a man for no crimes committed!!! Unqualified, improperly trained people being employed as cops is causing huge problems.
ALL cops are improperly trained. It takes 6 mos to train a cop and two years to train a nail salon worker. What's wrong with that picture?
The problem is finding people with the COURAGE to take on the career as police officer believing they are going to be stereo-typed as someone to be avoided on a personal level.
But police departments go out of their way to recruit stupid people!
That's what happens when they hire by diversity not qualifications
@user-oh1lo8py9i
Qualifications? All that's required to be a cop is a GED, a low IQ, and a mostly clean criminal record.
Those with morals and intelligence are deliberately excluded, as they would be less likely to blindly do as they are told.
I love seeing everyone in the community coming together on this.
This is one of the most clear-cut cases of "contempt of cop" I've seen in a long time.
This is the most blatant case of false arrest I have ever seen in my 40 years on this planet. These cops are either gigantic idiots or they are intentionally trying to get sued.
I believe you meant to write, "contempt by cop".
Why no body talks about the billions of tax payers money being wasted by cops losing lawsuits.
As a veteran who's occupation was law enforcement, I find these cops' lack of respect towards the document they swore to uphold and defend, abhorrent and treasonous. They slandered this veteran, defamed his character, and demeaned his entire struggle while in service to nothing by violating the very rights he fought to protect.

It’s scary to think how many other incidents have not been reported because not everyone know what their legal rights are.
You don’t hear this kind of stuff happening in the UK but maybe I aught to brush up on my rights just in case. Cops are universally dickheads nowadays
Where are all those people who always claim that if you're not doing anything wrong you don't have anything to worry about? They need to get on this.
They would probably say he should have respected her authority and just forgotten about his rights to make the situation easier on himself.
@Aluzky well, in North Korea he would probably be sent to a forced labor camp. Now, the real question is, is any of those situations reasonable? Will there always be serfs willing to lick 👮♂️🐷 boots (pen...)? 🤔🙄
@Aluzky there’s no such thing as a stop and ID state. There are states that have laws required you to show ID if the cop has RAS of a crime. In this case any RAS the officer might have had was dispelled when she could see that it was a cane. No where in the US can an officer ID you just because they want to or because your acting “suspicious”. A crime has to be involved.
He wouldn't be able to file suit if it was valid.
@Aluzky Police still need RAS of a crime to demand ID, even in so-called "Stop and ID' states.
