    Erudite's presence makes it really obvious how terrible Ana is. Her tantrums and the way everybody calmly speaks to her and consoles her like a whiny child. I don't know how she isn't embarrassed.

      You could actually argue that Ana is a perfect representation of what the rest of the panel is trying to highlight. She demonstrates every single behavior that people worry about when it comes to rape accusations.
      Of course, I'll add the obvious caveat that she is an outlier but on a large scale, a small percentage of Anas can cause a lot of damage. It's such a thorny subject because people who perceive the world the way that she does, seem to truly believe they have been raped or abused but then when she answers specific questions, you realize she has an insane definition of those terms.
      It also ties in to some of the accepted concepts of what people believe as being contributors of rape culture. Like labeling a clearly hysterical person as acting hysterical or eratic. This is considered language that is basically rape apologia. It's probably not helpful to use that language but goddamn... sometimes it's just true.
      This subject just has so much motivated reasoning taking place on both sides of the argument.

    its really fun seeing ana and erudite talk about studies. Ana reads studies, but doesn't understand them. Ana will believe any study she reads because she doesnt have the background to challenge it. Erudite on the other hand is a practicing professional. When she reads a study, she understands it so she doesn't have to take the study at face value. She has the tools to read a study, and challenge things like methodology. That difference is just really cool to see, because they are coming from the same information but ending up at completely different conclusions.

    • @bradmiles1984
      @bradmiles1984 2 года назад +1

      That's because Erudite can understand those running a study like she said can skew the questions to get the answers they want. Take the famous study from 2007 which gave us the 1 in 5 statistic for rape on college campuses. That study was a survey study done on 2 campuses but there wasn't a question that asked if they had been a victim of sexual assault, instead they asked them if they had encounters they later regretted. If the student said yes then they counted it as a rape. Many people have debunked the study breaking it down showing the study is false yet tons of people parroted the 1 in 5 statistic including the President at the time Barrack Obama. This study brings up the point some of the panelists made where things are being counted as rape which shouldn't be. If you have an encounter with someone then regret it weeks later but consented at the time you shouldn't be able to go around claiming you are raped which then is ruining the reputation of the person you slept with. Rape is arguably the worst act anyone could do to another person and it should be taken seriously and not an accusation to throw around lightly.

      yes you hit the nail on the head. Even though rape culture was a term created to represent the fact that some victims have a hard time comming forward and that some people are ok with bad things associated with harassement, the word was clearly chosen to insinuate much more. The word culture makes our minds think that there's actually people that practice rape as a normal thing and that is a widespread accepted thing. Which clearly isn't. THere are some people that see it as ok or tend to think "it's not a big deal"? yes. But as a culture we don't see it that way. As a culture we all despise it and people are extremely against it. Individual people are not a culture. That's why the term is so toxic. The words chosen don't accuretly represent the definition and where chosen to imply something that is not true.

    In almost every debate panel anytime someone says "the data is on their side" it's 99% likely they don't have a clue about what they're talking about and cherry picked highly flawed research to support their arguments. Most people just read an abstract, then skip to the conclusion and say "Look, evidence I'm right!".
    EDIT: Should note this applies regardless of education levels. There's full on doctors and medical professionals toting utter BS and quoting terrible research. Or they ignore the limitations of the research yet still claim a position of being right without acknowledging limitations of research.

    I think a really relevant comment from a previous debate w Ana and a fair amount of the panelists is from a therapist whom viewed it;
    (My fault for copying your comment sir all credits to you)
    “Unsure why this wound up in my YT recommendations or what possessed me to listen to it, but here we are...
    As a therapist I am very concerned about the state of Ana’s mental health and hope she accesses proper help to process the dissolution of this relationship, as well as evaluate the impact of social media and having an online presence has on her mental health. I also hope she is able to find a way to walk the line between her student/professional life and her private life in a more healthy and non-maladaptive manner. Once you are trained in this field it is very easy - and extremely tempting - to want to view, analyze and label every person and situation through the mental health lens. Just skimming my DSM I could diagnose every single person I know with at least two mental health disorders - and give myself ten. But I do not because that is unhealthy and incredibly limiting in terms of how I live my life, not to mention unfair to me and the people around me who just want to interact with Laura. Not “therapist” Laura. It is also incredibly inappropriate and inaccurate as in this situation we are viewing behaviors from a subjective rather than objective lens. When it comes to personal lives and relationships, most are unable to play the role of an outside third party with no personal stake in the matter and let personal emotions and biases cloud their understanding and judgment. Which is the antithesis of therapy. Not to mention highly unethical and, to use language from this video, “weaponizing” our training and expertise - filtered through a very biased lens - against others.”
