Not its intended function, but this thing has been amazing for transferring my old tapes in real time too (plus it gets around the macrovision encoding). Pleasantly surprised by its versatility!
I might buy the Genki ShadowCast or other Capture Devices for streaming and recording videos for RUclips. I don't want to buy the other Capture Cards that are over $100.
I got mine from the kickstarter last month and the software is definitely the weak point but its still heavily in development. A lot of issues can be fixed if you go to the advanced options by putting in the Konami code and I've had the camera switch thing happen also which if you just swap resolutions some it usually figures itself out.
It apparently strips HDCP so it works with PS3 and Vita TV out of the box. Also if you do the Konami code in their app it enables advance settings but you have to do it everytime you open the app.
One of the draws of this is that you can choose to use the video source (Switch gameplay) in a zoom call rather than your web cam. Could be cool for gaming with friends or helping someone play an RPG or something like that.
You can get much better out of these if you get into the few options available through obs. Just like any driverless webcam. Enforced 480p with a retrotink as input is where these shine.
I was just messaging with someone about this shadow cast thing. Glad you uploaded this video as I see how bad the latency actually is. I will just stick with my original elgato from twenty sixteen 0/
running a wired controller would diminish input latency more. I mean I get the whole point of the video and the convenience aspect of this whole setup. but still, I have no clue how people game in general with wireless peripherals. I get using wireless stuff with story based/solo games; running nearly wired everything where possible is just something I'll always cling to 😅😅 def sold me on one of these though with this video man. I enjoyed the content, just straight forward and not convoluted with someone's internet persona. esrned a new sub here buddy
I really crave a near-zero latency experience with this sort of display capture device, but clearly, we're a few generations out because not even premium brands like Elgato are delivering sub 10ms. So this will have to suffice for the time being. I'm a PC gamer and just want my consoles to be windowed applications in my PC for general computing comfort. Being able to stream it is gravy. Very curious about the upper limits of this devices' latency given perfect conditions.
I’m on the same boat as you. I would play my consoles more if I could just pop open a window on my pc with no latency. Any luck finding anything in 2023?
Playing on a 13" or so display works so well in my opinion. The text is now large enough to read and graphics still look crisp and clean. When I throw it on my large 4k tv it doesnt look so great. I prefer using this on my Surface tablet on an arm now in bed.
I purchased this so that I could play platoon 2 on my laptop and it just does not work. I knew I'd have latency but for fast paced games like splatoon 2 I'd recommend for people to purchase a better capture card.
in the shadowcast website, they do not add the TV latency. their claim video latency is just the difference between tv and notebook. actually the shadocast latency is about 90ms when you use its app. the real latency = tv latency + difference between tv and notebook. some tv latency is 30ms and some tv latency is 70ms.. if you use 70ms tv latency to test, user will see the beautiful number of testing latency ...
if im understanding this product correctly, you would be able to stream nintendo switch gameplay through discord to your friends on your pc? thats all im looking for. i dont want to break the bank to do it but i also dont want unplayable latency lol
A niche use for this: people who travel a lot and can't lug a monitor with them. I used a really expensive one of these back in the day when I'd go on deployment. Had horrible input lag but that didn't matter for RPGs. Would have been nice to have something with manageable input lag to play other things.
I tested it out on my own computer and I ran everything kinda well. I found that after I ran it as administrator and ran it to focus on performance I was able to play Smash and Animal Crossing.
This would be good for camper vehicles or people who only have a laptop and no screens. Switch is a pretty good idea too since it's pretty low power, well all Nintendo devices are low power usage which is ideal for battery solar windmill. Unfortunately found it inconvenient to target solar setups gave up on it at the moment.
I use this while I'm at work and when I'm in bed at home. Got my Surface Pro 7 on an arm so I can lay down and play switch with my pro controller. Much more comfortable than holding the switch and I can actually read the text in games now haha
Don't know why they mainly advertise the Shadowcast for laptops. I have my old PC connected to the TV to watch Blu Ray movies, browse around and stuff from the couch. I also can play with the Nintendo Switch via the dock. But it's not possible to play relaxing games and watch at the same time Netflix on the same screen, so that's where the Shadowcast comes into play, can't wait to get it. Question: Does the Switch show up in Windows Explorer? So you can transfer data (pictures, videos, savegames) straight away without having to do it via cable swap, micro sd card or wirelessly via FDPD.
Looks as though the latency is mainly being introduced by OBS on the laptop If the cheaper device is also shown as a camera in Windows, try opening the built in camera app in windows instead. I wouldn't expect it to be perfect, but shouldnt have as many latency issues that way.
I started using the Shadowcast and when using the Genki App, along with connecting with my Switch, the screen is always flashing and being distorted. Has anyone ever had that issue before? If so, has anyone fixed that?
The Genki team seems to have abandoned this product to work on their latest Kickstarter. The software is absolutely HORRID. So if you’re thinking of buying this device to save time and money, just don’t. There is a recurring issue that happens with the Genki software and Shadowcast where you will not get any sound coming from your Switch or any other console you have hooked up. It’s a shame, because it’s such a great idea- there’s just no support behind it. I’m returning mine.
So, is this make your laptop as a monitor? Do you need a high power PC or laptop to do this. Like in emulator. I just needed a laptop monitor using my ps4.. Because my Parents keep using the tv to watch.. Sorry noob question..
Yeah allows to use like a monitor or to capture video footage. High power? Nah not exactly, but if you have an extremely old PC or graphics card you may have issues with footage. But i mean I used a weak Surface Pro and didnt have much issue, so id imagine most would be fine.
What's not fair? Did I only show it working with OBS and not the Genki software? Or did I show both and specifically state it works perfectly fine for the most part within Genki's app and not as great with OBS? So what's not exactly fair? I really don't understand your comment.
im just looking for something i can play my switch or ps5 or xb1 on my laptop when the family using the TV. IDK if this is what I need. Remote play sucks for me
Go to the GenkI site at Genki things dot com, chose Shop, then Shadowcast. You can choose your OS or run it through Chrome with the option to record inside of Chrome. :)

Can this be used on a projector?
Just to note, you can go in and out of full screen with Genki Arcade by double-clicking the screen area of the window.
you have the direct link to Genki ARcade? cant seem to find it

This could be a solution for hotels that don’t let you plug anything in to the hotels TV. You’d need to bring a laptop though.
I'm so happy a content creator I trust did a review on this. Thank you!
Been using it on my 2017 macbook pro and it’s great. Use it during my lunch break at work and school.
Using this on my laptop, I tested it with rhythm games, and the latency was noticable but surprisingly playable

The latency isnt really bad using their app, but using it as a capture device in OBS there is some latency introduced.
for a laptop to game on, the shadowcast captures gameplays effeciently.
Ima be honest ima use this to play at work lol 😂
Play Doom it was the game that made office productivity slump in 1990s

Thanks for the bid Ron. Turn buffering off in obs and try it. Should make it better
I should have mentioned it in video, but all footage of instances with OBS settings were set for optimal latency with recordings.
@@Madlittlepixel thanks for the clarification!
Seems like a great device for someone who has limited space to work with like a dorm room, hotel, bedroom, etc.

What is the name of that anime fighting game you were playing? Also, what version of SMB are you playing? Good video, BTW. Thanks.
Anime = King of Fighters.
I just checked their kickstarter comments and it looks like multiple people received cans of beef gelatin instead of the Genki. Now that's funny.
For real? 😂 WTF
How does it hold against the (allegedly) USB 3.0 capture card/dongles that are also sold in Amazon?
My laptop doesn’t sport video over usb c , can i buy adapter usb c to hdmi ?
Hey Ron, try using the cheapo unit with the genki arcade app. I wonder if it still works.
It doesnt 😂 i did try that before filming
It would work better if you used a splitter to a tv.
hi can you use the genki shadowcast for the ipad pro??? thanks!

Can I still have my switch display on the tv screen as well as my laptop
Is the Genki ShadowCast compatible with a desktop PC with 2 screens ?
I don't know if my laptop can run it. is it ok if I have 8 gb ram and intel family graphics only?
how do I find the video software like OBS or Genki Shadow? cant find the app or program on their website

Man, the latency on the 10$ HDMI dongle is painfully visible, even on the video.

I used a USB-c to a adapter and it worked

Streaming to RUclips. ;)
wiil it work with a tablet for the switch?
