The American army even went so far as to file a official complaint to the French High command about French soldiers being friendly with black American soldiers. While France also had segregation, in the military they saw each other as brothers of war.

There was not segregation in Frznce. That's why France had laws for equality and refused to separe soldiers because of their color. The harlem hell fighters introduced jazz in France. General Black Jack Pershing, the US Commander, knew the courage of the African-American soldiers from his time commanding them early in his career (which is where he earned his nickname), but he also knew that prejudices among other American soldiers would lead to tensions and possible violence, so he sent the 369th to reinforce the French Army. The French had plenty of black soldiers from their colonies in Africa, so they were very welcoming of these American reinforcements and quickly integrated them into their lines.
One of these soldiers, Henry Johnson, earned the nickname Black Death from his German opponents for his ferocity in a trench raid, when he fought off over a dozen attackers with a shovel. The French awarded him their highest honors, but it wasn't until a few years ago that the US finally gave him the Medal of Honor that he so rightly deserved.

Henry Johnson was alone (he was with 2 wounded Frenchmen, one was unable to get up and the other was injured in the arms and unable to help, the one with injured arms made the report for him for his bravery as witness) on a trench network corner outpost, they had 11 men reposition as the fighting seemed to brood else-ware. Durring this stage they had just started running into the early stage of the troops attacking at night. Durring a late night attack he heard a enemy movement at the early stage of the engagement, he fired his P14 rifle till dry, he loaded another shot from a box to his left and fixed bayonet, he spotted another man and fired and the gun exploded cause it was a 8mm Lebel cartridge (over pressured, mis-shaped round for the gun he had, causing the frame to explode and make the gun unuseable), as they broke threw the barbed wire, he threw 1 grenade and pulled out the Trench Shovel and jumped onto the makeshift palisade to engage 30 German infantry soldiers to his front. The Frenchman thought he was mad at first then he watched in shock as the American cut threw the lines receiving injuries he thought impossible to survive. At the end of 23 minutes of fighting he killed 30 men, forced the remainder to retreat. Of his injuries and disposition: A dented helmet where a pistol round skipped, he had 8 stab wounds, 12 gunshot wounds, he had a piece of shrapnel from a grenade pass threw his right flank, and he had several fractured ribs when he dropped back into the trench to keep in cover.
Shortly after the battle the 11 man team was returning to the line as quickly as they could cause the Frenchman managed to request aid (never explained how or when he went for aid). They were still trying to patch the man up, luckily one was a medic and was treating the wounds quickly before he passed out.
For the Remainder of the year there was talk about a man in the French lines that was ferocious and deadly as Death himself, leading to his nick-name later being called as such (Black Death) for how ruthless in battle he was capable of being.
The Unit was named the Harlem Hellfighters because they were more forward thinking, it was mostly un-welcomed by the standard army to have them join so the Hellfighters were mostly sent to French Lines under an American Officer group as mentioned above, he was very down to earth with the concept of these men being in the lines as well as knew there potential over all. The French welcomed them with open arms and even shared equipment, rations, and made friends in those lines. Such a different world that must have been, getting treated better in the Trenches by Other countries and select people compaired to what they delt with back home. They were highly reguarded in France even after the war and France rewarded them medals and features that no "White" unit ever received in such reguards, going so far as to hand write every personal document for the soldiers to show the authenticity of each award, signed by the person who issued and the person who proposed the award. Now its not ALL great, there was the fact they didnt keep track of American soldiers in there lines, and any soldier who was K.I.A. and wasnt named didnt get a chance at there award, but that went for many in the first world war.
Honor to the fallen and much respect to those who serve, no matter the Branch of service or the time of war, I salute you for your all and what you have given and done!

My favorite fact about the Harlem Hellfighters is simply how they never lost any ground…to really grasp the significance of that, we need to appreciate how battles were often fought in WW1.
Typically, the attacking side would amass as much firepower as they could on a single spot of the line, unleash as much destruction as they could, and then send in the infantry to mop up the enemy and secure the new position (as a basic summary).
At the same time, the defending army would lose the first handful of trenches and ready their reserves to re-take them. Due to technological shortcomings at the time, it was very hard for the attackers to press any advantage since they could not communicate back with their command. So the attackers would get bogged down, the defenders would ready their counter attack, and then by the end of the battle the front lines would have barely moved at all.
In short, units losing and regaining bits of ground was very common in world war 1, but the Harlem Hellfighters NEVER LOST ANY GROUND!! That was so insane to me when I first learned about WW1 that they instantly became my favorite American unit of the war!
Just found your channel but thought I would share my thoughts, keep up the great work reacting to some bangers!

This song makes adrenaline pump in a way I've never felt before. Such a masterpiece. Sabaton really gave a hell of a recognition for Hellfighters.
About Harlem Hellfighters, sorry for long text, but there's just so much to tell about them:
The 369th Infantry Regiment of the 93rd Division, formerly the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, was unique.
on 8 October 1917 the Regiment traveled to Camp Wadsworth in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where they received training in actual combat. Camp Wadsworth was set up similar to the French battlefields. While at Camp Wadsworth they experienced significant racism from the local communities and from other units. There was one incident in which two soldiers from the 15th Regiment, Lieutenant James Reese Europe and Noble Sissle, were refused by the owner of a hotel shop when they attempted to buy a newspaper. Several soldiers from the white 27th Division, a New York National Guard organization, came to stand with and support their fellow New York soldiers. Lieutenant Europe, however, directed them to leave before violence erupted.
There were many other shops that refused to sell goods to the members of the 15th Regiment, so members of the 27th Division told the shop owners that if they did not serve black soldiers that they can close their stores and leave town. The white soldiers then stated "They're our buddies. And we won't buy from men who treat them unfairly."
The 369th landed at Brest, France, in December of 1917.
In March of 1918, the regiment began training under French command due to their need for replacements.
By summer, they were fighting in the Champagne-Marne Defensive and the Aisne-Marne Offensive.
It would be then that the Harlem Hellfighters would see grisly combat during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which began on Sept. 26, 1918.
As part of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, in which more than a million American and French troops attacked the German lines, the 369th suffered some of the worst casualties suffered by an American regiment in the war, with 144 killed and almost 1,000 wounded.
"What have I done this afternoon?” wrote Captain Arthur Little in his memoir, From Harlem to the Rhine. “Lost half my battalion-driven hundreds of innocent men to their death.”
In recognition of their bravery during the offensive, 171 officers and men received medals and the entire regiment received the Croix de Guerre from France. The 369th returned to a huge victory parade in New York in February of 1919.
Among the more than 14,000 total American soldiers buried at Meuse-Argonne is Freddie Stowers, a member of the 93rd Division, 371st Infantry Regiment, and the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor from WWI.
These all-Black units, which served under mostly white officers, readily took up arms with their fellow Americans, hopeful that their patriotism and service would lead to better treatment at home.
In the end, the Harlem Hellfighters, as they were likely first dubbed by their German adversaries, spent more time in continuous combat than any other American unit of its size, with 191 days in the front-line trenches.
The unit also suffered 1,400 total casualties, more than any other American regiment. Many of those soldiers are buried or memorialized at American military cemeteries overseas managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission.

Man, I really want you to do Lady of the Dark or Dreadnought next. Lady of the Dark has in my opinion the best chorus on the album (it's insanely anthemic) and a really cool story behind it. It's about the most decorated female soldier in recorded history. While Dreadnought has MY favourite chorus on the album, it's very ominous (ooh, ~ominous!) and groovy. It's one of those unique Sabaton songs that aren't very common, but always amazing and as the name suggests, it's about the ship called *Dreadnought.* The coolest ship of all time, even beating Bismarck.

Hate to be tht guy, but Dreadnought was a class of battleships. There were many of them build by many nations. They became obsolete over time and Bismarck class ship was in many ways better, because it had better technology used etc. But great song all around, and as you said, ominous!

    • @Wolojuice
      @Wolojuice 2 года назад +1

I also want Sabaton to do a song about the Tuskegee Airmen, 92nd Infantry Division, or the 761st "Black Panther" Tank Battalion if we're going to talking about Black troops that never surrendered and almost never failed in the world wars. The 761st fought continuously for 183 days in France, Belgium, and Germany. Most US tank battalions would've been rotated off for R&R and replacements long before that. The 761st also helped rescue the 101st Airborne at Bastogne, fighting off the Panzer spearheads. Their motto was "Come out fighting." They fought ferociously and earned their nickname and their motto.
With the Tuskegee Airmen, they were some of the most talented pilots in any faction of the entire war. They had a near flawless record in every escort mission they flew protecting American bombers flying over Italy, Germany, and elsewhere. One of the Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Roscoe C. Brown Jr., was one of the first Allied pilots to shoot down a Me-262 jet while it was in the air.
Going off of that I hope Sabaton eventually does a song about the USS Iowa, or at least the Iowa class, the baddest battleship that ever set sail. The Iowa served from the middle of WW2 all the way up to the 1990s. It was the most technologically advanced battleship of WW2 and was continuously updated to remain relevant even in the age of the aircraft carrier.

The Hellfighters were in WW1. Meanwhile the US army was still segregated right through WW2, and this caused tensions. When troops were stationed in the UK the place wasn't segregated, and American MPs could not get venues and facilities to segregate. There were fights in pubs because black Americans were dancing with white Brits, and the white Americans couldn't deal. The US army even had to put out a video on how to behave yourself in the UK.
It really popped off in Lancashire at the Battle of Bamber Bridge. White MPs in Lancashire (think Manchester, Liverpool, that part of the world) were writing up black troops for petty bullshit, the troops got argumentative, the locals backed them against the MPs, and it ended in a running battle through the town of Bamber Bridge. First a riot, with black soldiers and the locals against the MPs, and then the guns came out and it turned into a night-time battle. 1 dead, 7 wounded.
The army desegregated shortly after the end of WW2. I figure they saw that a repeat of all that would be bad for effectiveness.

The Hellfighters are my favorite WWI story. Prejudiced in their own country but accepted by their French allies. Their name was the black rattlers (i think), but the french respected them so much they called them the men of bronze. the germans were so scared of them that THEY called them the Hellfighters, and consistently tried to recruit them with promises of equal treatment. Spent the longest time in the trenches than any other American division, the first to reach the Rhine, and they never lost any ground. They had men captured, but they were always recovered before being taken fully prisoner. That’s only the beginning. Such a badass division.

Yay! You did this one! This song just STARTS OFF LIKE A WRECKING BALL, coming in hard and fast, fitting for the Harlem Hellfighters. This song is so heavy and it goes super well with Joakim's grit and rasp in his voice. He gets really down in there in the dirt of the trenches vocally. Also, that squealing, shredding guitar solo just comes screaming in like a bat out of hell and also suits these men and their bravery.
My only gripe is that the hook is also in the chorus and I, personally, would like to have them be seperate so they would have to flex more in the lyrics.
Other than that, I loved this song. I was so happy the Harlem Hellfighters got a song. Apparently, they wanted to do this topic and song so BADLY but it didn't fit on the Great War album so I'm glad they got to do it here. All the members were like, "Hellfighters? That's the best fucking name ever! And it's a perfect song title for metal! We don't even have to think up a track name bc it's already there! WE MUST DO IT!"

They’re not as brave, they don’t learn as fast etc. Even though they fought with distinction in every American war until then. 54th in the civil war, the black jacks and Tuskegee airmen in ww2, hellfighters in ww1 to name just a FEW. Fucking love it.

Hope you check out "Lady of the Dark" from this album. It's my personal favorite track on it, and it's about the most decorated female soldier in all of recorded history, Milunka Savic, who took her brother's place in the Serbian army after he received call-up papers.
