The 555 Cummins was actually out long before 1979. I know of a small Rural Volunteer Fire Dept. in the Adirondacks of Upstate NY. They used to have a 1974 Dodge 900 Series Pumper that had the 555 Cummins Diesel Engine for a Power Plant coupled with a 5 Speed Manual transmission, and a 2 Speed Rear Axle. The Pumper carried 1,000 Gallons of Water, and was equipped with a 1,000 GPM Pump. It was Second Due Engine for most of it's Fire Dept. career, and would slip up into the First Due Slot if the other Pumper was out of Service, or, if they received a Call for Mutual Aid to any of the surrounding Fire Depts. in the area.
My dad wanted a 555 but the local dealer, who sold A LOT of Versatiles, wouldn’t sell us one. So we bought an 835, which we’re still running, 39 years later. I think besides the engine, the dealer didn’t like the adjustable axles either. Does anyone have experience to say if those concerns were/are valid?
One of the neighbors has one with the exhaust rerouted to the passenger side of the cab. Looks pretty nice and he doesn't have to stare at the stack either.

Very nice 555 ,love your videos.
That yellow engine paint is not stock right? I don’t ever remember them being yellow!
I am not certain. I would have to dig out a sales brochure.
great looking tractor great video
Its got a sticker on it from a CaseIH dealer in Huntingburg,Indiana
Good eyes. I almost mentioned something about the dealer sticker in the video.
Very nice triple nickel!
Great job on the videos !!! Keep up on the good work.
Thank you for the video
Pretty cool. I don't know that much about Versatile tractors, you don't see them too much in my area.
We are always on the look out for classic and new Versatiles. They are neat tractors.
555s were the worst Versatiles ever made. Those little v8s would not hold up.
That model wasn't good at all the engine didn't hold up and the tractor was underpowered bad
Great tractor...terrible engine, the rods were way too narrow
