Many of you requested that I review Kontrol Freek thumbstick additions so I reviewed the PS4 Kontrol Freeks. I talk about how they work, the packaging, and the different varieties.

TheKingNekro They most certainly have to be mass produced. Theres no way the engineering of the bottom and the rubber coating can be done by hand. Ask Drift0r, this is his background!
Think about it, one mistake and the rubber could come off, or the base could be too wide. Alot more work goes into these things than we give them credit for.
The same way a piece of plastic part for a car can be $80. :(
Yea maybe they run through an assembly line BUT, think about how much effort and money they have put into them before they were at the assembly line stage. They must have tested and tried out different things, made prototypes, spent a lot of time into them etc... Same thing for just about every product, it's expensive because of the testing etc. And yes, of course the name tag affects the price but it's not always just about the brand

Hey Drift0r, you should buy some daylight color bulbs for when you're shooting reviews. Your review videos tend to be pretty yellow, so if your in-camera white balance isn't doing the job then daylight bulbs would help.
Thank you for the honest and helpful criticism. I wish more RUclips comments were like this one. Been having a hard time with light balancing. At first it was too white, then too yellow. I've been trying to color correct out most of the yellow but it doesn't seem to be working.
Drift0r No problem, dude, I'm a fan! I do video for a living too (not RUclips) so if you need any help I'd be more than happy to assist. I shot on DSLRs for a while and I that baked-in yellow has been the bane of my existence many times.
if you have custom white balance just remember that 5200K is natural light so if you're indoors just drop it down to 3600K or so which adds blue aka cools down the temp of the shot

Kontrol Freeks are great. The price of them and the general attitude of the company sucks, but some of their products are really nice. Hell, I even came up with the concept years ago, using a hair spray bottle cap and dimes. A month or two later they show up with a real product.
If you buy some, you should be very picky about which you buy. Convex/Domed tops are most assuredly the most comfortable and allow the most precision, more and more so the longer the stick. The trick is to roll the stick under your thumb, as opposed to using a concave stick and sticking your thumb in a static position in the center. Also, tons of bumps or embossed designs are HORRIBLE. The flatter/smoother the surface is, the more comfortable they'll be, and the more grip you'll have.
He didn't mention this, but they work wonders for racing games as well, allowing TONS of precision to the steering, which is really important in sim games like Assetto Corsa, Gran Turismo, etc. I'm a PC gamer, but I use controller quite often in games that make sense. Platformers, Racing, Flying, Fighters, 3rd person non-shooting action adventure, etc. So like Shadow of Mordor is a good choice for controller, but something like Tomb Raider where shooting is prominent is best with mouse.
For you console guys who play shooters, there are two routes you can go. You can use a high sensitivity, allowing fast turning on a full tilt, while still being able to be relatively precise with the added fidelity of movement. Or you can keep a lower sensitivity, having the same max turning speed as you usually do, but you'll gain a significantly increased aiming precision.
Finally, the older 360/PS3 models are usually cheaper than the ones for the new controllers. If you're on Xbox One, you NEED to buy the Xbox One model, as the new sticks are way smaller. If you're on PS4, there are two controller iterations. The original has glossy buttons and softer rubber on the sticks. The 360/PS3 models fit those stick snugly with no issue at all. The new version of the controller has harder stick rubber (to prevent the issue of the sticks wearing out from use, which by the way is completely solved by using KontrolFreeks, my original model's sticks look brand new because I always have the KontrolFreeks on, which stops me from rubbing against the rubber and tearing it up), and also has new matte buttons. The new sticks coating is very slightly thinner/smaller, which means while the 360/PS3 models definitely fit, there's just enough room to allow them to spin and wiggle. They won't come off with use, and you basically cannot feel it while using them. You can only notice by trying to spin the sick, or by grabbing it by the plastic base and wiggling it gently. If you have a bunch of controllers it might be best to go with the older models. Not only are they cheaper, but they work on PS3/PS4(Old&New)/360. I have no experience with the PS4 specific sticks, but judging by the design I'd say there's a good chance of them only working on PS4 controllers. (If anyone who has them can test and let me know, that'd be nice.)
As far as which models I'd suggest, of the current lineup I'd say (With current prices and no promo code):
CQCX (Short, $11), Ultra X ($11), Hoops/Tee/TD ($10)
With shipping and a coupon code, they should be $12-13.50.
The sniper ones are oddly more expensive right now even though they are ugly and really old, and there are quite a few other older discontinued convex/domed models available that you may be able to find elsewhere. I snagged quite a few of the silver/black halo ones for $4 each from a Microsoft Store clearance.

I Have the CQC Signature and the Specter for my PS4 controller, and they work great, as long as your original thumb-sticks haven't started to peel yet. Putting these on completely ruined my PS4 original thumb-sticks with the poor rubber integrated in them, after that, the Kontrol Freeks continuously fell off when I would make a sharp left or right with my finger. Would not recommend if you plan on buying for an older controller, but they work great with my newly bought scuf.

Truth is, I HATE using a mouse to aim, its very uncomfortable and requires a desk, and I prefer my recliner (and yes, I do have a gaming PC which I built, I use it for Skyrim only)
Kontrol freeks are kinda gimmicky, but once you get used to them they actually do help. I play alot better than i used to (and no, I wasnt rubbish, I could still play, these just made me better). I probably wouldnt be able to play without them at this point. Anyone who says they dont work hasnt upped their sensitivity to compensate for the extra travel.
Kontrol Freeks are actually one of the useful gaming products.

Kontrol freeks are amazing. I've been using them since 2010. I like the way my fingers rest at a higher level on the controller.
My one and only question... Why do all these "pro" players use Scuff controllers and Kontrol Freeks?

Better accuracu, and if you dont play claw, it's hard to jump or crouch without taking your hand of the right stick, which is why there are buttons on the back. AW is gonna be heaven for people who use scufs cus they can jump shoot.

Just got some and my game has improved so much.
I remember when I was 11 and I couldn't afford control freaks for black ops 2, so I stacked pennies and taped it on, it really did help me though haha

No need to buy next-gen freeks. My old 360's controller freeks fits the PS4's Dualshock perfectly.

I really like the fps freeks. I use one single fps freek on the right stick and nothing on the left. something worth keeping in mind is that if you use these fps freeks for a long period of time it becomes difficult to play without them. Took me about a month to really start noticing that my performance improved as a result of the fps freeks. On the flip side, my performance without the fps freeks has really suffered, meaning im garbage without them.
Don't EVER put a Kontrol Freek on your left stick. When you click down to move forward, the Kontrol Freek will dig in to your controller. Eventually you'll crack your controller or at least make a hole.
Yes! Left thumb stick is definitely a no. I've ruined 2-3 controllers because after a while, playing games like CoD where you are constantly pushing the thumb stick in and up, it eventually wears it down and makes it stick.

Heisenberg101 Yes. The part that digs into your controller is the part that claws onto the stick. No matter how small the Kontrol Freek is, the claw is going to be there. When you press it down, it's going to dig into your controller.

if you are looking to buy these or a scuf I recommend buying both. Get the plain sticks on the scuf though. The reason I would use kontrol freeks over the scuf sticks is because with kontrol freeks you have the ability to customize. If you don't like a pair of kontrol freeks, simply get a new pair. With the scuf, whatever sticks you buy you're stuck with.
Do Not Buy These-
They do not improve your aim. All they do is make you dependant on these to play. if you go to a friends house you cant play, if they break you need to buy more.
TBH the default xbox one sticks have better and longer lasting grip than these
The only reason you should buy these is because the sticks you currently have are uncomfortable(xbox one sticks are skinny)
I'm mostly looking into these because my ps4 controllers left analog stick has a tear and the whatever material is on the surface of the two sticks has worn off, if they provide any aiming benefit that's just a bonus for me

My preference for Kontrol Freeks is long addition on the right stick, and short addition on the left stick. It actually works very well.

I use the same setup as Jessica. It's not needed as much for the movement stick, but I didn't like having my thumbs at two different levels. They really are awesome.
Drift0r, another benefit for these is that they're easier/cheaper to replace than the sticks on the DualShock4 controller... my first 2 controllers for the PS4 had the rubber wear off terribly, so when I bought a new controller I immediately put KontrolFreeks on it to protect the thumbsticks, as well as for the added torque.

My Alpha set (the new VERY short/wide ones) just came today. Can't wait to get home to try them out.
I've been using my PS3 KF's on my PS4, it works fine, just they can slip off with too much pressure. I found out just using it on the right stick didn't do it as much since it's not being held in constant directions like the left does. If you still use your PS3 KF's just for this purpose, then you don't really "need" new ones for the PS4, I just like the Alpha ones since they minimalize the stick height but protect the sticks and give me the same control (I have small hands).

I bought the fps exo sentinel bundle that comes with the skin and sticks, the ps4 controller sticks are short compared to the PS3 controller, I realized that it does make a difference having longer ones since the PS3 has longer sticks, I was getting mowed down on advanced warfare in PS4 compared to PS3. But now that I played pa4 cod aw, the PS3 graphics seem like ps2 graphics compared to PS3 in way. It's a noticeable difference. But I ordered some KF FPS Exo sentinel for my PS3 and I'm trying some caps for my ps4 to see how they work, if not I will wait till spring and get the KF exo sentinel like I did with PS3. Can't wait to try it out. Longer sticks help me out a lot, I don't change my sensitivity if I use a smg or sniper, I keep it at 14 in AW. Good video man, love that white controller, I have 2 of them with my white ps4. She's got good taste!

Got the CQC on 360 for Black Ops 2, then transplanted it to my DualShock 4 for Ghosts.
Review modsticks next. I used KontrolFreek for a few years before I switched to modsticks. If you don't know, they are aluminum thumb sticks that are fully height adjustable. Takes a little controller surgery to install, but it's worth it.
I prefer the longer ones, my hands are massive and I snipe most games so the longer ones are perfect for me. PS4 it was a must, could not get used to the con-caved sticks.
My only problem with KF is they are not well maded. the rubber slips off after 3 months and the clip on bit scratches the controller so I cut clips down and glued them on

I have a, "Kontrol Freek Ripoff" but I love them SO MUCH. It ads a tiny bit of hight and a little gel grip on them. It ads a lot of grip and some hight, and I got 4 for $6.99 so it's pretty good.

Yeah, the ultra and the classic are basically the same. I have the ultra, classic and cqc, all convex.

I think you mixed up convex and concave. The ultra are concave which is why I like them. I combine them on the right with the cqc mid rise on the left.
