girl you did NOT just say "is that the One Direction boy?" im CRYING
👀👀👀 I had to be sure ok? 😆😆
Lol I said I think he'd in one direction right before she said this 😂
jess... i know you didn’t just say “who’s harry styles”
🥴🥴👀😬😬😬 showing my age 👵🏾
@@JessOwens Glad I'm not the only one haha
I am a book blogger, and while I definitely agree that book bloggers should get paid, what I think the original source was talking about is when a blogger ASKS for a book for free and then after receiving tells the author they must pay for a review. Specifically: not being upfront about costs. To me that's just unethical.
I totally get that. If you want to be paid, make it clear up front.
Your entire reaction to the anna todd stuff is hilarious. Down to the not knowing harry styles... dead
😂😂😂 I can’t keep up with the youths
I just finished reading A Deadly Education yesterday and found out about the controversy today. I honestly really liked the book and as an Indian, was not offended by anything in the book. When I was reading it , everything made sense within the context of the story. I can't comment about the dreadlocks bit as I can see how that can be offensive but especially the not bathing/smelling is not just a thing because the mc is half Indian but because she is a loner with no one to watch out for her. Any loner in the context of the story would be in the same situation or worse. And the mc being a destroyer, I felt, was also just part of the plot.
I'm currently reading it now. Did you enjoy it? All of the passages that were posted, I've read and I don't see that big a deal?
Fox News books?!? FOX NEWS books?!? I hadn’t heard of this yet and whaaaaat whyyyy ugh 🥵fox news entering the publishing industry is 🤬😡
Good luck to them on making any money. Those people don't read lol.
Seriously WE DONT NEED IT
🤣🤣🤣
I am blogger and book bloggers are the only bloggers who dont get paid to feature a product on their blog. Some people forget that this is a business.
Also the only book promoters who aren’t supposed to get paid. Bookstagrammers, booktubers, and even booktok are all acceptable paid platforms, so why can’t bloggers get paid? 🤔
I agree. It’s a business and you do a lot of hard work for free 😩
“I don’t know a lot of things” most relatable statement
My life motto 🤣
RE: A Deadly Education
I appreciate your point about not telling people what to be offended by. In the conversation surrounding A Deadly Education, I think it's productive and fair for both sides to express their opinions on the novel, but what's not ok is saying you cannot raise concerns at all. Or that raising those concerns is drama. Especially considering this is a novel about lots of non-white people written by a white person. I'm not saying that you have to be non-white to write about non-white characters, but understand that there will be a heightened and deserved scrutiny.
Wonderful commentary as always :)
Sooo true. I’m always open for conversation on books if they’re considered problematic. Certain things would make me avoid all together but some I’m intrigued to read. A white author definitely has to be more careful when writing POC characters
And POC authors has to be careful when writing about white characters?
I must just be old, but when I grew up one knew better than to criticize a book without reading it. One shouldn’t argue from a position of ignorance. They should read the work and argue from a position of knowledge. That will make their arguments hold more value.
I honestly think her apology was the best kind of apology taking action to correct a mistake and make visible strides to do better and grow people cant change the past
Right I get she didn’t chat about every single issue, but she at least understands her book was offensive and intends to change future copies, as well as has an action plan for future books. I don’t read her books, but it’s great to see a more thorough comeback to offensive work by any author.
Book blogger here and it's hard as hell. And it's hard to build a following and I know for a fact I helped a lot of Black authors sell their books in June due to a viral tweet.
I feel like building a following on a blog is so much harder than RUclips or Instagram
As an international book blogger, I've been blogging for 3 years, only took off some time from blogging, got to a decent size as a blogger and I blog in 2 languages. But because I am an international blogger (I live in Hungary) I could count on one hand how many books I've received for a review request. No shade to booktubers but we bloggers often feel like our work is worth less just because we work on a more "traditional" platform. Not only takes it hours to read a book and write the posts, it takes hours to translate my posts to be able to reach more people. It just hurts when people keep on shitting book bloggers really...
Props to you for blogging in 2 languages, that’s incredible ! And so much work. I have so much respect for bloggers- it’s a lot of work and I can’t do it
Lmao we definitely don’t need more people from FOX news writing books.
This was a wonderful video from start to finish ✨
Thank you !! We literally do not need one more book from Fox News 🤢
“Is that the one direction boy?” Bruh 😂 thats me talking to my students
Hahahaha like I can’t keep up with the youths !
Eww... Fox News backed books. Oh, and the women's prize should be for anyone who identifies as a woman, not the legal definition. The law is just a little too slow to catch up with the rest of us.
Fox News Books is just GROSS
Including trans women shouldn't be a question, but I think non binary inclusion should happen, ESPECIALLY for non binary people who are transmisogyny affected. Cis women might think it's too complicated to decide who to include, but 1) most trans people are regularly experiencing some form of misogyny and 2) trans feminist literature has been talking about gendered oppression in the trans community for decades, it doesn't have to be about which genitals we have.
Idk I just think a prize for women which doesn't work to include at least transmisogyny affected non binary people is lazy and shit. Sorry for the rant! I just want to spread some info. 💖💖💖
I've only returned audiobooks on Audible if the author turns out to be racist, misogynistic, homophobic, etc. Most notably, I returned all of the HP audiobooks even though I listened to all of them multiple times. Maybe that's wrong, but oh boy did it feel good taking my money back from JKR.
I use the library for any audiobook from an author or narrator I haven't tried before. Usually I only purchase audiobooks for fave books I want to reread and nonfiction.
Same !! The library is the best for audio, I’ve only bought a few
Re: book bloggers being paid. Honestly don’t see anything wrong with what the author said. If book blogging is your business then you should treat it as such and not add the terms after you (the blogger) reached out to them (the author) at the end as an “oh BTW”. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be paid for your time, just be transparent about it. If you’re upfront and Authors don’t want to pay then that’s their decision but being upfront will save both parties their time.
Very true. I agree it’s unprofessional and shady to throw it in at the end they you expect to be paid
Also re: A Deadly Education, I COMPLETELY agree with you. I think the passages sound not so great. And I’ve heard opinions from both sides. I personally will read it and make my own opinions, but I think if someone WAS offended in any way, they absolutely have the right to be since everyone has different experiences and upbringing.
Yes exactly !!
Oh damn how did i miss the Akwaeke Emezi news 😱😱
I didn’t know about it either until someone told me !
I'm happy for Curtis. He looks healthy enough. I just today found my last succulent dead and withered in its pot so...mistakes were made. Happy to see other plants thriving. xD
Curtis is thriving, I am so proud. Now I have another smaller plant in my kitchen there is dead as hell 😂😂😂😂
I don't get why people are so upset about book bloggers wanting to get paid. I mean if an author doesn't want to pay them then find someone else to read and review your book. 🤷♀️
I don't think there is anything wrong with asking to be compensated for your time reading and reviewing. This is normal in many other interest/hobbies. And I agree, writing a review is not easy. That's why I don't like doing it. I'll just be saying the same shit. So for these people who take time to write reviews for these books that say more than "I loved it, it was so good" ...good for them. Because I can't do what they do 😂
you remind me I need to get my thoughts together for the book I finish by January I think I better look it to the release date for that book I'm new to getting books early last year was the first time I had a deadline made by someone other than me ( and I never listen to myself) I try to pitch the book to my husband and fail to ( nonreader) I've yet to get him to pick up a book I've read but one of these days I will
I do not like writing reviews either LOL and I agree about them being paid, but be up front about it lol
Re book blogging for money - Simplynaillogical had a podcast ep where she talked about why she no longer does nail blogging and how she would put in a ton of hard work and time into reviewing and promoting nail polished for little to no money, and how companies would take advantage saying she’d get free nail polish as payment for what was many, many hours of work. And eventually having to understand her worth and ask to be paid accordingly. I think the same concept can be applied to book bloggers.
16:40 Hmm...The book bloggers and being paid topic. Honestly, I am for them in being paid. To the viewers it may be simple and quick to put together (which it can be if you sign up to websites that have templates, etc.). Web designing is are layout to be easy to the eye, eye catching, user friendly, etc. Before I knew the in's and out's of web & graphic design I was naive on what goes into it. Now, majoring in it. Book bloggers or bloggers in general NEED to get paid. PERIOD! This is just my two cents on the topic. With this economy, you gotta take what you can get even if it's "doing what you love".
Amen!!
reviewing a book and promoting a book are not the same, and maybe coming from a journalistic perspective, i don't believe reviews should be paid for (in my country that would make it an add, and it would have to be specified, or you would be breaking the ethical rules of journalistic practices and could be sanctioned for it). blogging is of course a bit murky, since it's not journalism, and at the same time, if you review a book for a magazine/news paper/traditional media etc. the media itself will pay you for your review, and you are not doing free labor. (although, sadly, book reviewing is a dying art in the traditional media industry). but maybe publishing houses should learn better practices for influencer marketing, you can still produce authentic content under advertisement, but technically i'd say that's different than reviewing a book.
I think publishing has a lot of work to do with working with bloggers. People say paid reviews are biased but people do get paid to review for magazines and such. And then who’s to say that when you give someone a free book that doesn’t influence their review ?
The biggest problem that I had with Naomi Novik's book was that this wasn't her first book. I also read an ARC (reviewed on Goodreads and Tumblr). I was surprised that something so major was not spotted by her editor. I'm a white woman of a certain age, i.e. a Boomer from the very end of that baby explosion period. If I found these sections jarring and offensive, I cannot imagine how those of black and Indian heritage felt. Assuming she had an editor. With the amount of publishing professionals first for monetary reasons, who knows?
And, yes, Harry Styles was with One Direction. He's also a singer/songwriter who is hugely supportive of the LGBTQ+ community and is heavily involved in charities.
Instead of arguing whether audio books are 'real' books, we should have been talking about whether fox news books are real books 😒 like, does propaganda count as a book???
Love your videos so much!
Would just like to point out that being a reviewer is a Pidforbtraditional job. Do you think that people at the Guardian or the NYT that review books movies etc aren’t paid? Pay book reviewers even if they are independent xxx
For sure, there are so many professional reviewers that are paid
Emezi should never have been asked that ffs. If a prize wants to include trans people, they HAVE to make clear their stance on including non binary people and people with cultural genders who aren't men or women. And they have to do this without asking for "verification". MANY countries do not allow trans people to change gender markers, birth certificate etc, some only allow it for those who are infertile. There are plenty of countries which don't really have a legal gender as a distinct thing either. Honestly I'd say the main way I'd divide trans people who can get the award was based on a) are you transmisogyny exempt and b) are you exempt from misogyny, it's really complicated and imo continues the theme of cis women thinking they're more marginalised than trans people in general.
I've never dealt with reviewing ARCs and I don't have a blog..instead I have a booktube channel I've abandoned for 2 months...
but I feel like if someone is asking for an ARC from an author it's that author doing you a favor so the author shouldn't necessarily have to pay.
But, on the flip side, if the author is asking someone to review an ARC then that author should have to pay.
Does that make sense at all, or do I just sound like an a-hole?
Totally makes sense and I agree. With the caveat that, maybe with smaller authors who reach out, if they are unable to pay for a review but the book does sound interesting to you, you might still add it to your TBR for the future.
I don't blog, but I do have a "decent" following on my Instagram. I've had a few small authors reach out and I let them know, if the book sounds interesting to me or not, and that I have no clue when I would be able to read it, but would try to. They have all been very understanding and most have still offered me the ARCs.
@@LoveLeighReading Oh yeah absolutely. It would waste everybody's time if the reviewer wasn't interested in the book.
It makes sense. I think more so publishers so pay rather than authors directly
I didn’t even make it to 50 pages in A Deadly Education before DNFing it. I hadn’t reached any of the iffy stuff, I just thought the book was shit lol.
😬😬😯😯
Amazon is like a giant squid who got it's tentacles everywhere 😔
UGH seriously 🙃
I wish i didnt have to rely on amazon but its just soo damn convinient especially for someone whose a hermit most of the time
I’m not sure why the author was *specifically* referencing in her tweet regarding book bloggers, but I’ve heard from a lot of small shops on Instagram that they’ve been asked to provide free product just straight up. Not sure if she was referencing all book bloggers or just those that are asking her directly for the book and then also asking to be paid.
I agree that book bloggers to deserve to be paid for the hard work, but I think someone who may be just starting and has a small following asking an author for the book (for free) and then asking for additional money is kind of shady. I think if an author reaches out to an influencer than they should be expected to at least pay something, but not necessarily to someone asking *them* for a book for free.
I feel like I didn’t say that very well. I just know from experience and from what I’ve heard that there are *some* people who just are always asking for things for free on Instagram....but yet they don’t even follow you?
I understood what you were saying.
One thing that I saw mentioned on Twitter as well, was if an author/publisher is reaching out to a book blogger asking for a review, it is not the "review" the blogger is asking for compensation for. They are asking to be paid for their time, for their platform and for the "spot" of the review. On that last one I don't know that I used the correct wording, but essentially bloggers normally have their blogs and TBR planned out ahead of time, so if you want the review for your book to be done in a certain time frame, then yes you should be paying for it.
I wish I could find her tweet to link because she explained it so much better.
@@LoveLeighReading that’s a good point! I think maybe a lot of issues could be resolved if we all just had a better understanding of each other. 😄 As someone who runs a very small blog, if you could even call it that, and I personally never have an issue with that. But I have seen bigger bloggers who have mentioned how full their schedule is.
I think this is definitely conversation that we all need to be having, but at the same time we just need to make sure we don’t shame *small* authors for not being able to pay. (Not implying that anyone was, just think we need to tread carefully.)
@@heathermalmal9943 Definitely! Everyone's situation is different, and no one should be shamed. There should be more open an honest conversation about it, and I am hopeful that that is where things are going.
So true, if it is a small author, I think a free book is more than enough. It also seems weird to message the author and request the book and ask for pay.
oh my god i did NOT know after was written by a 24 yr old about 17 yr old harry styles.... like i always thought the project was a bit :/ because he has personally spoken out about it but i thought it was at least a LITTLE justified because she was a teen writing self insert fic, YIKES !
I can’t confirm that but it sounds messy regardless 🤢
wait...are you googling harry styles 😂😂
“i don’t even speak coherently half of the time” SAME lol
and honestly we don’t need any books from anyone at Fox News unless they’re exposing the misogynistic, racist, toxic environment there 🤭
I totally googled Harry styles, I wasn’t 100% sure 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This might sounds stupid, but can't we just have one anticipated book that isn't filled with problems, microqggression or has publicly bad (JKR) authors
Just one book without drama or problems or outrage 🥺
I WISH 😭😭
@@JessOwens just one book, just one 😭😭😭
Congratulations again on your monetization!!! Also thank you for these videos keeping my old dusty behind informed of the goings on especially since I don’t have Twitter! lol 😂
Thank you !! Ahahaha I try to keep you abreast of the mess 😆
I just stared a book blog this year. I do pay for my website and I don't make any money from it. People have been doing reviews in magazines and such for years with pay but if we do book blogs/booktube/bookstagram etc. they don't expect to pay anyone. These publishers don't realize that we drive what does and does not sell. People DO look to reviewers before they buy a book. Not many people can make a living doing blogs/booktube etc. There isn't anything wrong with knowing your own value.
So true. People who get paid to write reviews for magazines and blurb books .. who’s to say they read them? Publishing wants free publicity and that’s unfair
The blogging thing is like Kylie Jenner reaching out to illustrators and photographers and offering exposure as payment 😏🍵 ALLEGEDLY
💀💀😂😂😂😂
A little late here but I’m an author assistant and we often will pay a book blogger’s fees if they have the stats to justify the rate. In the end, it’s all marketing. The one thing to watch out for is to never pay someone who says they’ll post a review on Amazon. It’s against Amazon TOS.
the way i’m obsessed with these bookish communitea videos...
😌😌
I looovvee your hair!!! 🌻🌻🌻
Thank you !! 🥰
In book bloggers and blogging:
The main issue is that there are actual laws surrounding doing a paid review and a review. You need to disclose that. So fine, get paid, but realize your first line is going to be "I was paid for this review," which in my mind as a consumer, I'm not wasting my time reading that review. I just can't trust that you'd really trash a book if you don't like it but are getting paid. I go to places like Goodreads to try to get unaltered opinions on books.
I also helped review books for a book blog with my friends. He said we got hundreds of authors emailing us and asking us to review their book for a free copy. Any ARC I read I hated. 😂 So I stopped when I kept giving 1-2 stars and my friends were asking me to temper my reviews a bit. Ultimately we quit, because the money and time invested in the website and ideas was too much for something to not be getting paid.
So I guess the real question is; at what level is being paid acceptable (i.e. the author or publisher or a website or magazine/newspaper)? Idk. I feel like the author shouldn't pay individuals directly. I think a transaction at that level may be too personal to get you a fair review. If a publisher pays you though, that's a little different and maybe more acceptable. At any rate, it seems messed up to approach an author and then immediately throw up a pay wall.
i just left a very similar comment. i think there are ways to create engaging & interesting advertisement content about books with bloggers/influencers, but "reviews" are not the way to go. bloggers can be a great way to get visibility for a book (and then consumers can decide if the book interests them) but paid reviews do not seem authentic and will seem off putting to most. traditionally, authors often do the legwork for promoting their book, so say a paid promotional discussion between the author and a blogger etc. could be much better advertisement for a book than paid review.
I can see how an author paying a reviewer directly could be questionable. People who receive a free book in exchange for a review also have to mention that they received it for free, so I think those reviews could be biased too. Those people may think the book is 1-2 stars but rate it 3-4 because they want the publisher to keep sending them books 🤷🏾♀️
I agree, that people are allowed to be offended and have their opinions. But sometimes there is context to be taken into account for certain things. Again, you bring it with the hot tea Jess! ❤️
So true ! I’m gonna read it and see how messy it is myself 👀😂
I appreciate your book reviews and all the work you do. I have been watching all your videos this week. :) hope you’re doing well.
You figuring our who Harry Styles is was so funny
Look, I wanted to be sure 😂 and I cracked myself up while editing so I left it in 😆
jess really didn’t know who harry styles was... that sent me
😂😂😂 like I heard of his name but ..
I’ve been waiting to watch this all day! This is my fav weekly series, hands down. Sending all my love to Curtis and Nigel. I love them so very much.
They thank you for the love !!! 🤗🥰
Just found your channel today and I am having a fabulous time binge-watching them 😁I think book-bloggers being paid makes complete sense considering the time/effort going into those reviews, especially if the publisher/author is reaching out to bloggers. I think the women's prize is definitely reinforcing the elitist image these prizes have if they're only accepting legal status of sex/gender, I hope they'll consider in future how that essentially eliminates all transwomen who can't get that legal recognition from their governments or can't afford/don't want to proceed with the surgeries that would be a requirement of that recognition 🤦🏻♂️thanks for all the great videos, sorry for the essay!
YAY WELCOME! Binge watching is the best 😂😂. I love long comments, no worries! I especially think that publishers sending reviewers books for a review in particular should pay bloggers. It's so much work and I definitely can't do it.
Sounds like you needs some wix.com in your life......
Oh My your puppy is absolutely adorable!!!!! 💜
I have thoughts on all the topics you talked about but my brain is unwilling to order them into a comprehensible order apparently. I never once thought to return an audio book I have finished heck I still have ones I haven’t finished. In the three years I believe that I have been forced to use audiobooks as my only source of books I have returned 2 one was a read of what would have amounted to be a film picture book in a bookstore and was not advertised as such. The other had two narrators but only featured one in the review clip and they were not the one who narrates 75% of the book and the one who did was absolutely horrible.
Maybe I’m missing it but is there a link to the audiobook site that you recommended?
I added a link to Libro FM in the description! I think I’ve returned one audiobook and it was like one chapter in 😂
I didn't know who Harry Styles was either until this book came out. Lol.
😂😂😂
I’m rewatching this after your HC Union video and we all totally saw this coming. This makes me extra glad they’re striking. Frankly more publishers employees should be probably be unionized.
Re: Women's prize award. They said they only allow women who are legally seen as women (cis and trans), but there are so many trans women who are not seen as women by the law of the country they are in (including the US) and that does not make them any less a woman. I hate this idea that in order to be trans you must medically transition, get your name and pronouns changed on paperwork, and fit this perfect stereotype. That is so harmful and transphobic. The law should not determine someone's gender and neither should society's perception of someone.
Yes, it’s extremely harmful and it’s not fair to those who don’t want to undergo all of those changes so they can “officially” be considered a woman.
21:50 "or of the female sex" 🤔 so trans men are considered women under these guidelines? I'm confused
It's always the wyts who is offended in behalf of the poc. I just wish they should asked the POC if it really is offensive😫😫
I'm on page 81 and I've felt funny reading this so I came to see reviews
did you finish? did you like it ?
Fox News is gonna start publishing books.... * rethinks my whole stance on never burning books *
Seriously 😒
I've had two different book bloggers send me Instagram messages about doing paid reviews of my books. Since I'm self-published still building my readership, it would behoove me to have reviewers do this, but at the time, I couldn't afford them, so I politely declined. I will say I was worried about the idea of paying for reviews. You don't know if you're going to get an honest review or if they're going to sugarcoat the problems because you paid them. But I will have to see what happens when that happens.
Are Audiobooks from Spotify good or bad for authors? Does anyone know?
Thank you for sharing the information about audible. I use Libby now but when I did briefly use audible I did that. I had absolutely NO idea that this was how it worked. Thank you for sharing this information. I’m sure there are many people that, like me, didn’t know how the authors are impacted. Thank youuuuu
Could have bet my money you were 22 until you asked about Harry Styles 😄
Edit:
On the book bloggers being paid... and comparing bloggers to other reviewers i.e youtubers.
RUclipsrs don't get paid to review books. They get their revenue from ads/views/sponsorships etc So I think it's unfair to compare the two and blame the author/publisher for not paying bloggers.
However, if a publisher reaches out to a blogger/reviewer they should pay. But, getting angry when you (a blogger) reach out to an author, asking them to pay you for the review of an arc when they say they won't do it is irrational. They should be able to say yes or no.
PS. Book bloggers should start a union if they're keen on getting paid 😄
LMAO damn it, I should’ve edited that out so you could think I’m 22 😂😂
I agree that if a publisher reached out, they should pay the reviewer. An author reaching out is different
I only know about After from the reaction videos here on youtube and *yikes*. Entertaining to see the reactions and the roasting of the movies tho.
Do reviewers who get paid always clearly state that they get paid for a review? This was a big discussion the beauty community went through a few years ago, and consensus was reviews by people who get paid are less trustworthy, though not completely discredited, because unconscious or conscious bias might be present. But, if you do get paid for a review or have a financial relationship with the company, that should be clearly disclosed.
I think if you got paid to write a review, you should have to denote that but now that I think about it...I don't know if they do
From the thumbnail this will be interesting
😏😏
I offer paid review for the authors who reach out to me, sometimes repeatedly when I didn't ask for nothing. If I am the one to reach out, I would not do that, or not like a BTW at the end cause that's not ok to hide it til the end.
But blogging takes a lot of time, taking the photos takes a lot of time (and sometimes money), I believe it could/shoud be payed, in general, and yes the review can still be honest.
Other areas are paid for promotion (cause that's what we do in the end), like in makeup or lifestyle. Here, we have to read + review + take photos of the book, I think it should be paid lol. From publishers or authors directly. It is work.
I hate this idea that if it's your passion you should not be payed.
I agree not to throw it in the end that you want to be paid. But especially from publishers, bloggers should be paid. It’s so much time and energy and sometimes money spent to promote their book !
im dead at who is harry styles 😂
😬😬 like I thought he was the one direction boy but I wanted to be sure ya know 🤣🤣
I'm currently reading a Deadly Education, I didn't know about the backlash I just picked it up because I'm a fan of the author.
Honestly there are other issues with the book besides racisim. It's the antsy 90s teenage version of Harry Potter. Unlike HP where the characters live through the experiences this one just dumps on you in exposition. The MC completely de-humanizes the people around her and they are no longer people but assets. Since the book is from her POV it makes it a very uncomfortable mind set to be in.
Here is another stereotype thrown at you from chapter one. The first thing she says about her Indian family is that they're vegetarians... you know, because they're Indian. Doesn't play into the story just the first intro is that they don't eat meat. I'm a vegetarian myself but I wouldn't introduce myself as such nor would I make that my defining character.... it was so weird!
It was all extremely weird. El was so judgmental and awful, being in her mind was exhausting. And so much exposition 😒
I am an Indian and I just noticed something.
In Hindu mythology, the God of Destruction is Lord Shiva, and he has dreadlocks. I guess people got confused.
But I didn't see Naomi Novik mentioning anything regarding Hindu Mythology being part of the book so maybe I am wrong
Yeah, she didn't mention that in the book
Your hair is gorgeous!! Great video
Thank you 🥰🥰

As someone whose husband is in the military the flippant veterans comment was 😕.
lol
I feel that bloggers should be paid, especially if they are asked to review the book. To me it is more understandable for them to not be paid if the blogger requested the arc from an author, but people should be paid for their work in reviewing the book.
True, if they request it from the author that’s different.
Hiii love this channel but did you say you were in Italy??
I think she did, around 8:00 i guess?
Yes I believe(?) she lives in Italy for military purposes for either her or her partner. (if not I'm sorry I dont mean to assume lol)
Yep! I live in Sicily. My husband is stationed here with the military ☺️
Jess Owens ohhhhhh gotcha! I literally could not tell! Hope you love it there!
Looove the intro
Thank you ! ☺️
You always look lovely but just wanted to say your hair is lookin stylish and fine as hell girllllll. Always fun to change up your look!
Thank you 😭😭☺️☺️
Thank you for talking about A Deadly Education! I just checked the book out from the library, and I wasn't aware of the controversy I'll be sure to read it with what you mentioned in mind.
Of course ! It’s important to be aware of “controversy” surrounding a book. In certain circumstances it can make the book an automatic nope for me or I’m like ima read it and see 👀😂
Great video as always! Thank you for keeping us informed and for showing us sleepy Nigel. I just love him so much 😭❤
Thank you for watching ! I had to give the people a glimpse of Nigel in his precious, sleepy state 🥰
Hey Jess I love your channel xoxo
Hiiii thank you !!
@@JessOwens You do not need to thank the truth xx
Thank you for the discussion about A Deadly Education. I don't have it yet, and will now wait to see if the promised revised edition comes out.
I’m interested to see how long it takes to get the revised editions
Great video! Love this format, feels like I'm getting all the crucial book news and gossip I need. 🙂
Yasss ! Thanks for watching 😁
I would genuinely love to hear about your thoughts on A Deadly Education post your read! As a reader who is white, I feel like I lack an appropriate lense to analyze the microaggressions and missed points in this book. I love Naomi Noviks other works and have been a fan for a long time, so I’m very disappointed and a bit loss with where to go from here with my relationship surrounding her works. But I think learning more and hearing from more people about this, including awesome Booktubers like you, will be the best in us readers working through that!
I’m currently reading it and will make a video after I finish !
@@JessOwens I really appreciate that!! Can’t wait to see it ❤️👍❤️👍
I tend to use my library for audiobooks and audiobooks for the ones they don’t have that I was to listen to so one book a month and I tend to listen to a lot of audiobooks ( lots of video games playing I can’t choose between reading and video games some days) as a book blog ( a bad one Ik my reviews aren’t the best) I personally don’t ask for arcs or money for reviews any book or anything I review because I do movies and video games sometimes I have not been paid or receive an arc and if I did get an arc copy it was a give away or the one time out of two times a publisher got a whole of me ( the second one I’m currently reading) and was a e arc though NetGalley so ppl who say book bloggers shouldn’t be paid then how about other “jobs” why is my time less valued then a painter, or songwriter personally I would love to be paid to review book but on the other hand I’d feel bad because I started my blog as a place for me to talk about the books I love and ones I don’t like as well so it what ever the reviewer and author feel comfortable with
I love playing The Sims and listening to an audiobook 🙌🏾. I think book bloggers should be paid directly from publishers at least. Your time is just as valuable as any other paid field
@@JessOwens right ow it sims, Minecraft and crash 4 I have to make sure I got my housework done before I turn on any game or I'm worthless
Just want to say I love this! I get all my book news/drama in between you and Daniel Greene.
Yay! Thank you🥰
I did read A Deadly Education before I saw any of this, and didn’t really enjoy it. I find it weird that an author can add things to a book after sensitivity readers have gone through it.
It’s super weird to add in stuff after all the edits and sensitivity reads 🤔
Why? Isn’t that how you make the new version less problematic? Like, fixing your mistakes and stuff?
Dropped everything to be here
Heyyyyyy welcome 🤗🤗
Dropped everything to be here
☺️
Nooooooo not harper collins and Fox News
It’s disappointing
@@JessOwens Beyond. So sad.
Fox News the household name in diversity. I don’t know anyone more diverse and inclusive than that stellar team.
🙃🙃. When I think Fox News, first word that comes to mind is DIVERSITY. Like I’m sure Candace Owens will bless us with a book under this imprint 😶
I love your hair! 🔥
Thank you !! 🥰
I definitely agree that book bloggers should be able to ask to be paid, and also that being paid=bias is dumb. But I also think there's a part of the initial tweet that a lot of people seem to be overlooking, which is that the author didn't ask. In most industries the person who wants the service (and would then be paying for it) is the person reaching out. Hopping in someones dms saying, "hey, send me your book and also pay me to review it" when the person was never looking for a review from you in the first place, seems a little strange to me. I think it's valid for an author to be like, hey, I don't want y'all to do that.
I agree about the original tweet, the reviewer shouldn’t ask last minute to be paid. It should be presented up front. Also , I think publishers should pay reviewers more so than authors directly. Sorry, I’m not good at speaking clearly 😂😂
I love your hair! Looks very ethereal.
Thank you ! 🥰🥰
True, I don’t think making a MC biracial is inherently racist or problematic but I guess you do need to take more time to make sure you don’t include anything stereotypical or harmful
@@JessOwens valid
I'm Indian and I'm hurt that a white woman can write such nasty things about Indians. Not gonna read anything by Naomi Novik, thanks for talking about it!
P.S. Just found your channel and I love it! Instant Subscribe! 😄
I’m sorry, I wish authors weren’t so careless with their words. Thank you for subscribing 💜
I think it's important to have spaces and awards for women alone. We fought hard for them. That's why the definition and categorization of "woman" is important.
Let me just say, I disagree that longlisting her book is "transphobic."
Hundreds of women submitted their novels and desperately wanted to even be nominated as she was. To say nominating her was transphobic is a total slap in the face- especially given she was happy to win for FW and did press rounds. Now because you are unhappy, that win was transphobic??? Really? It feels reactive and spiteful. It undermines the fact that she won her nomination on her merit alone. Why being longlisted offends her so I don't know. Her novel certainly wasn't better than any of the books that beat it out to be shortlisted and not better than the winner, "An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones. No that that's not okay. It was her debut novel.
When she was nominated in 2019, the Women's Prize had no clear policy on trans-women. They stated they would endeavor to concile the two in order to be more transparent to both authors and readers invested in the prize. That one must legally be a woman regardless of cis or trans is about as fair as it can get while also being objectively enforceable.
I had no idea that audible accept returns on the book. 😮 I always rather buy the actual books.
Yep for a whole year after purchasing , although they might be changing it
@@JessOwens they really need to.
