I think that the older radios like J.C. Penney's and Sears 40 channel phase locked loop radios were a lot easier to modify. All you had to do on those is cut a trace on the circuit board and resupply a voltage to the clarifier to unlock it so that the transmitter would follow the clarifier in frequency. You also had to install a couple of SPST-center off switches to control the frequencies. When I moved to Tennessee from the Atlanta area I sold all my old CB equipment including my old Fluke freq counter. Wish I had it all back. I did find a modified J.C.Penney's radio in my storage shed the other day along with a D-104 power mic. Now if only I could find an antenna I'd think about putting up another base station. I used to modify radios back in the mid 70's and 80's as I had a lot of schematics back then to work on radios. Most of them were pretty easily modified. I suppose if I could find enough coax I could climb a tree and put up a folded dipole but I don't climb trees any more since I'm now 69.
nice mod install. and cool on president repairs. I got myself used Jacson II and it just needed bub replaced in the scale. I do not have base antenna, with magnetic car antenna on the roof of the house I sometimes hear people over 1k km away. locals are quite dead here not around cities on trucks.
Mike , you make the best cb vids out there. Really appreciate your skills and explanations. Would love a video on getting rid of the beep, I know there are some vids regarding this, but your the one we all trust. I have a first rev 980, like the radio but that beep with head phones is painful. I enjoy using headphones, and that beep does not get controlled viz the volume knob, it is full blast to the ears in the painful range. I have a question on the 980 transmit meter, on ssb it shows a swing, but on am it shows almost zero. Not that it matters, but it seems odd. Maybe something I just don't understand. I like this radio. My only beef is the beep , and the rear speaker jack. I think all cb radios should have a front headphone jack. To me the joy of radio is getting the phones on and trying to hear those far out stations.
I would just like to know where he is at. I live in Ill. and I wonder where I would have to ship the radio if I wanted work done. alsp you sound like a guy I used to know. His name was tom, Torrez. He was a good friend.
Hello I have that radio. And the mic will work and not work plus the LED display fades out when in warm weather even at the first turning on of radio. Yes it is setting in the truck out of direct sun light and it's not warm to the touch at all
I am an enthusiast of SSB 11 meter radios and have a collection of Cobras, RCI's, Uniden's from the 1990's and 2000's all working fine. Was thinking on getting a modern radio and was wondering how good is this radio compared with the Galaxy's, Connex's, President's etc etc... I just like the looks of it.
Hi Mike, I need your help, I have a ssb980 second generation, my problem is that the screen starts losing digits with increasing heat; In the mornings, I turn on the station and it is perfect, but as the temperature increases, numbers and letters begin to disappear completely or partially. I need to know where to send it for you to review and, if possible, repair it. Beforehand thank you very much.
My new 980 the recive.. is great but my output is terrible my swrs are great powe great right from battery. And I do fail my output test anything I can adjust. Or throw a 2 pill behind it. ????
Is there a way to look at the box and tell if it's an old version. I've been looking at one and getting one of Marks boards installed but I don't know how to get one.
Have never had one here still in the box so I don't know if there is. There is when looking at the back of the radio. The old ones had a screw in the back near the antenna connector, in the new version it's a empty hole (no screw). The new versions did not need a bracket on the inside because they do not have a separate SWR board, it's been incorporated onto the main PCB.
Why won’t Uniden just come out with a 10 meter radio I love the design features and looks of these especially the new one with bear tracker and scanner but just make a 10meter
Kind of need to not forget the Uniden 2830 , HR2500 , HR2510 and the HR2600 and of course the original Lincoln seeing as standard is 10m only 28.000 - 29.699 MHz and have to be modified in order to be used on the CB band then also since Uniden made the radios for RatShack the HTX-10 and HTX-100 ( no 11m strait 10m only ) and for full HF the ol boat anchor Uniden 2020 (i have one). I would take any of the the above named tried and true awesome 10 meter export radios over the new crap made by Anytone re-branded as Uniden/President like the $100 980... Well you get what you pay for and when the radio is $250-350 vs $100 sold at Walmart vs eBay or a local shop or someone off the air.
You can buy a "President Grant II Premium" in the EU which looks almost identical besides the chrome. It has 25-30MHz (Jumper inside), AM, FM and SSB. However, I think that the President Lincoln II+ outperforms both of these radios in every aspect. I owned the Grant II Premium myself and compared to the Lincoln it lacks quite alot.
I have a uniden 885 bear tracker that is flaking out on me that I purchased last year. It is also hook up to a 3 pill. Before I get this one fix can we talk? I would love to put 980 on my three pill with the upgrade and mods. Please if you can get in touch with me.
i just mounted one of these in a car with a western star 250 watt bi linear amp.mike is the face plate glass replacable? if yes do you have a ball park on this job. the guy i just mounted this in his truck his is all scratched up. ty
Hello, I have a question you might or might not can answer. So what I would like to do is remove the face of my Bearcat 880 and relocate it. Just due to limited to no space in the cab, I have checked with every company that makes flat/ribbon cables no one can get me a longer on that connects the face board to the main PCB. Is it doabl to change out the connector on boath boards? James Blue
Why do folks do that to components lol. looks like I will be busy watching videos off and on today. I have three I need to edit and upload. Thanks for sharing Mike
I purchased the same model recently. Shows promise but its a bear to fit in my 2004 chevy s10 without cutting and drilling. Is it possible from what youve seen to convert the front panel into a head unit?
I been reading everywhere about the beep... if you hold the 9/19 button it disables it ... i cant recall at top of my head if that button or the one next to it
Mike I am so interested in one machine that you had in that shop and that's that one that you are using in this video I'm in love with that machine I may not be able to afford it can you please tell me what it is model number and all I would greatly appreciate that
it allows the clarifier to transmit on the same frequency it is receiving. a locked clarifier will not change the tx freq as you move it to receive stations that are not centered on the frequency you are on.
By unlocking the clarifier the transmitter transmits at the same frequency as the clarifier. This mod is usually done by providing a different voltage to the clarifier pot. It is useful when talking to people between the frequencies or to those who are off frequency or the normal frequencies.
If you mean the 885 I have not had one to look at yet and as far as I know there is no service manual that has been released for it. Is repairing a radio like this possible without a service manual, yes. Is it economically practical, no. That's why I always tell people don't buy radios that there is no published service manual.
Very nice! Is this just for show or do you install theses for customers. I really like my 980, makes a good radio for traveling with ssb,am and weather band. With the added channels I wouldn't need anything else in my pickup. Other then a little heat.
misener Other than getting a parts radio to extract one from, yep. Uniden service support is non existent. Email them and the reply is defining silence. If you dont have a FCC license you cant use the 10 meter frequencies. So what's the point. And if you do have a license you wouldnt waste time on this. Either buy a hf rig or a legit 10 meter radio.
If you are a CB radio operator and run a freq counter to stay just below the 10 meter band then all's well. You might just want to get above or below the channel 1 through 40 bullshit.
This is why the fcc is in business so people who float into 10 meter band and operate illegally get cost and pay hefty fines. Don't modify your cb to operate in the 10 meter band unless you are a licensed amateur! Too easy now day to get a ham license muilti guess and you get your ticket no morse or anything to restrict you.... you have a 25 percent chance of getting questions right even if you don't study theory.
You’re such a nerd!! Probably a sad Ham 🙄🤦♂️. Living in Mommy’s basement at 50 years old, picking the lint out of your belly button then smelling your finger!
That is what I say. I have a Stryker 955 HP that has so much more functionality than a 980 also got an old Galaxy DX93T great radio. Why convert a CB to a black box radio when you can buy one with it all in it. No need to add channels.
That was a lot of work done by Mark to reverse engineer the board and create a new one. really excellent outcome love it
I think that the older radios like J.C. Penney's and Sears 40 channel phase locked loop radios were a lot easier to modify. Is it easy to get extra frequencies for 11 meter band as well. We have a Bearcat 980 newer one
Congrats on the repair authority to do warranty work mike big thumbs up
Many many thanks Mike, you're so awesome !!!
We are waiting for your return Mike!!!!

That said, as a licensed Amateur radio operator, my question is what's the radio cost? And what's that mod cost?
What is the total price to do the conversion?
There is a 980 youtube vid showing a needle nose plier crushing the beep resistor. Extreme hack technique.
Also, what’s the price for the ten meter conversion? I have my license. KB2 DCV

HEY MIKE where can i get one of them new display board im intrigued
I thought this was going to be about a 10 meter expansion board being installed. All I found was major general Yak.
great work mike do you still work on radios and if so i have a 148gtl dynascan i’d like to have a frequency counter installed on

Am I able to get work done by you??
How much does it cost for the frequency m9d
How do you get in contact with hell?
Where can I get an encoder for my 980 SSB? Mine broke at the shaft. Uniden won’t sell me one.

can I fit one of these into a dashboard 'din' slot? how much to do the ch. brd? thanks, Chuck KC6CHT
Hold anl/nb button down for three seconds. This gets rid of the beep.
On the new version radios it does. There was no "off switch" on the first version.
Congrats on the President endorsement Mike.
how much would this cost to have done?
I been reading everywhere about the beep... if you hold the 9/19 button it disables it ... i cant recall at top of my head if that button or the one next to it

Hola tengo un equipo igual ¿cómo puedo realizar esta modificación? Gracias!
Can I send mine to you for the 10 meter mod?
Hi Mike . I want to convert one of these 980ssb 27mHz to 26mHz for use in New Zealand. Can you help with this?
Yeti com
Hi, is it possible to activate FM modulation in 980?
No.
Where did you get that new display board? I cracked the screen on mine, need a replacement board.
+misener
The display itself is removed from the original front microprocessor board and transferred to the new microprocessor board.
MikesRadioRepair so I'm pretty much screwed? Cb came out of Cb pocket and hit the shifter cracked the screen

how much is install of a 10 meter expansion board for a uniden 980 thank you
where can we get the board?
How can I get this board?
10 meter conversion for this is just pointless.

silly question, i have a 980 with a bad display board. uniden wants $60. for repair, but i was wondering if you have one i could buy from you, hopefully for less than $60.!
I get them by buying broken parts chassis.
MikesRadioRepair do you have any for sale?
No

It isn't unless you have a licence for them.

Mr Mike I sent you an email about repairing my 980 ssb thanks.
do you have email address? i think i would like to modified my 980 on freq expansion
So you converted a legal radio to an illegal radio. Don't need a license to transmit on cb, but you need a license for the 10 meter band.
That would be up to the user to use it legally.
be nice if you could answer questions asked
Rude!
Mike quit hes gone Way to think
An amateur radio license is REQUIRED for Ten meters, and once modified it's no longer legally useable on the 11 meter Citizen's Band.
If you dont have a FCC license you cant use the 10 meter frequencies. So what's the point. And if you do have a license you wouldnt waste time on this. Either buy a hf rig or a legit 10 meter radio.
