Polishing Aluminum

This video shows you how to take the tooling marks out of a machined piece of aluminum and polish it to a mirror finish. We use a Baldor buffer various compounds and sand paper. The rough machined surface is smoothed out by first sanding it with wet sanding paper on a lathe. Then the pieces is polished to a mirror finish using a power buffer.

To keep your hands clean if anything wear some tight rubber gloves, but yeah, never wear loose gloves or baggy clothing around rotating tool parts. I heard of a guy getting his glove snagged on a lathe chuck and nearly getting wrapped around the chuck and tearing him apart. For the torque it takes to turn metal on a lathe, it would have absolutely no problem sucking you into the bed, chewing you up, and splattering your body parts all over the wall behind it. Just some safety advice.

While I hate to advocate cheap Harbor Freight but only In the case of polishing will I strongly recommend that one uses a cheap HF motor and not use a strong polishing motor like that one. Polishing mostly requires speed and not much force that motor he uses has a lot of mass to stop when you hit a leading edge and rips your hand into it. And it will happen no matter how good you are.

I think that overall you did a very good job on the video. I already know what you mentioned, but did not show very well: that instruction to not lead your piece onto the wheel with an edge. I've learned that through experience, but I think it'd be very good to show that step, that caution, in detail because of the danger of getting hurt. An aside: I hurt a little finger badly a couple of years ago by grabbing the chuck of a half-inch drill while it was coasting to a stop, and the nitrile glove got grabbed by the chuck and whipped my finger to the point of ripping the skin open and sending me to the ER for stitches. Nitrile gloves are tacky, and you gotta watch out!

is 1000 grit all the higher you sand to? i am cleaning up a few motorcycle carbs and it's working alright, but you can still see scratches in the surface.
any tips for working on parts that have a ton of small radius corners?

please dont tell people to wear any gloves ,, i nearly riped my thumb off on a drill press turning way slower, was wearing a lose glove it will nearly tear you up so fast u dont even know what just happin , other wise like your vedio

LMAO @ that tiny lathe. That's for jewelry.. Just take your car products to a Chrome shop and allow the professionals to do it correct. That character doesn't know the first thing about (Metal Polishing)
