The Carolina Squat. Cali Lean. Tennessee Tilt. All names for the most controversial car trend since "Stance". One state wants to put an end to the trend of lifting the front end of pickup trucks. North Carolina house bill 692 is slated to make squatted trucks, and its probably gonna work. But how? I've got some questions about this bill. I don't think it's as simple as it appears.

In retrospect, I wish I used a full sized truck for our test, the results would have been more dramatic and reflected real world trends better, as squatted trucks are usually full sized. After reading your comments, it sounds like the headlights on these trucks have the biggest effect on other drivers, and do not sound like something I'd want to drive around.

I agree but to the people who do like those pavement princesses,
I gotta say they aren’t the best looking thing out there, in Tennessee we have a thing in Pigeon Forge, called the Rod Run which is massive car show along the strip of the road. It’s been going on since the 70s.
Now being someone who enjoys classic cars and cruising around, I don’t mind what you do with your ride, your choice, but when your in a 85 Trans am with the windows down and t-tops out with your girlfriend, and there is a 2nd gen Dodge Ram squatted like a dog taking a dump with a straight pipe that’s just as obnoxiously loud as the junk rap music they blast through boat speakers, and headlights that are brighter than their owner, you tell me how you like it when the light turns green and they unload a ton of unburnt diesel into your car that you keep so nice, then you can tell me how much you like squatted trucks

    • @hays00s7
      @hays00s7 Год назад +5

I think handling isn't a strong case, plenty of other mods mess with handling in a way that is detrimental to day to day driving. Its a "can of worms" argument IMO. The headlight note and night visibility are HUGE concerns though that I think are fantastic to bring up. The headlights would be BLINDING everyone in oncoming traffic which creates a dangerous situation for EVERYONE on the road. add to the the fact the headlights would be doing little of their job and its a recipe for disaster. Though you can adjust most headlights, I doubt the stock adjustments would be able to make up for the change in angle. Good points.

The fluid passages and other parts were made to be pumped and lubricated on flat level ground with slight variation of incline not changing anything but when you push fluid away from the pump that pump might be running dry until the fluid can flow back down properly which it most likely doesn’t not to mention the extra stress you’re putting on your front suspension could literally kill you a accident above 45 mph has enough g force to snap your neck crack your spine or cause whiplash at best

This is also an argument to ban lifted trucks in general. A truck squatted 3" rear and lifted 3" front is (viewing angles) similar to a 6" lifted truck.
To your point of crash-worthiness, the issue is not that the bumper is whatever height above stock, but that the frame is now at an angle and crash forces will react unpredictably (or outside of design characteristics as physics can absolutely predict what would happen) in a crash. Instead of forces being transferred longitudinally down the frame, mostly being absorbed in the front quarter, it would now mostly force the truck up up onto the car. Incidently this is the same argument used to limit/ban lifts on trucks and impact HD truck designs (as they are naturally taller) to insure their bumpers are within a certain height requirement.

    I'll try!
If something goes wrong with stancing it's more likely just a problem for the owner of the stanced car, aka the parts causing your wheels to have increased camber to give in to the forces and breaking off.
Stanced cars also tend to be smaller, lighter cars. Some people do it to their trucks to show off, but it's more popular as a trend on smaller, lighter cars.
Meanwhile, squatted trucks are more potent to be a problem for those around them, as you've proved yourself the short-range visibility is just not passing-grade, while short-range visibility is increasingly important as traffic gets more dense.
Squatted trucks also tend to be heavier. Big, heavy trucks mean more mass, so if an accident does occur, usually involving someone else due to sheer lack of short-range visibility, the victim is far more likely to suffer major injuries as one of the factors of impact force, mass, is a higher value.
And this is not even accounting for the issues with headlight alignment, which is a MAJOR safety hazard if done wrong.
Even if it's alleged data, if the likelihood of said data is sufficient, it's fair to use as empirical data, even if there's no recorded data to support it.
And then in the end the recorded data is completely different from the alleged precalculated data... and then scandals reach the light of day... so I guess truck squatters have some hope in the long run!
I'll just stick to my boomer tastes. I'd rather see a squatted 64 Chevy Impala.

As someone who lives in Myrtle Beach South Carolina where all of the truck like to go on vacation. I can say without a doubt that this is definitely a matter of safety. As there have been a recorded 57 incidences of squatted trucks running into vehicles due to visibility issue. There are nine named local car scenes in my area and all of them unanimously agree that it is a concern of safety. This is coming from the car Community itself not just safety officials and politicians. This is also coming from someone who witnessed four of these accidents occurring and they all happen to be with squatted trucks because of poor visibility. This isn't a matter of whether you think it should or should not be blocked this is a matter of its actually harmful and actually is dangerous and I can prove it. With science. Soooo... here’s the thing. I grew up in Georgia. Recently i lived there again in 2018-2019, it is not done correctly there or in the Carolinas, from what I saw.
I’ve lived mostly in SoCal from 2006-2018, 2019-2021 I’ve had two Cali-lifted desert running trucks out here.
I admit, I didn’t perform the lifts, but I have enjoyed them a lot. When you see it done just for style, it just looks wrong, vs when it’s done for function.
I work as an ultralight test pilot and spend a lot of time off road in the desert with my pickup towing (and recovering) aircraft. I don’t HAVE to have the lift but it allows me to drive a bit more aggressively off road. Angle is barely noticeable in my six inch lift with the front slightly higher than the back. When I “land” with a mostly empty bed and a pretty heavy V8 the higher lift in front end makes a difference when I land a jump.
The Carolina squat... you can just look at it and see it’s done incorrectly.
Again, not a true car guy, can just see what works and what doesn’t, as form is dictated by function. If it doesn’t work for an intended purpose, don’t do it!

Its not only NC. Plenty of SC trucks are squatted too. Unfortunately my brother is one of them. The main problem I see with them is many people who squat are ignorant and dont understand the potential, premature failure of front end components. When my brother bought his, it was already squatted. He constantly blew wheel bearings, snapped tie rods, and blew ball joints while going full speed down the road. Given they are a steering component, the tie rods could have potentially been the larges safety issue. We were constantly renting ball joint presses and tie rod removers (I was at tech for Automotive at the time) before I finally got the bullet and bought my own press and remover. I told him if he expected me to help him then, he needed to get the truck lifted correctly. He finally got a professional to install his lift in 2018 and aint blown one since.

Headlights have a relatively narrow range of adjustment through a vertical axis. It's very easy to raise the headlights to an angle beyond the ability to properly, and legally, align them. You will quickly create a situation where you're blinding on coming traffic. Not to mention that many of these trucks have a stadiums worth of lighting attached to them. Then you have problems with fluids moving to the wrong places in the engine and trans, instabilities added by changing the CoG and MoI, and applying stresses to components outside their design parameters. Plus, it makes your truck look like a dog dragging its ass on the carpet.

It isn't the pedestrians that get hit, its that these bros throw cheap LED lights in that are already blind others and then point them 12 inches into the air and there is no amount of adjustment that can point them in a safe direction. If they are coming at you on a hill, you might as well just stare into the sun, and god forbid you flash them to warn them its dangerous...because they spent 54.99 to buy a 50 inch lightbar off wish and pod lights for their "rig" and they wont hesitate to turn them all on to let you know how kind they are to only be slightly blinding you....ugh. The 6inch lift in front and 6in lower in the rear is some what legitimate, but you didn't account for the laid back seat and fuzzy steering wheel covers. Plus it was a mid sized truck a full sized truck sits higher stock so with these mods the results would be different

As a New Yorker who has been tailgated by a few squatted trucks, I have to agree with everyone mentioning headlights.
    1. Blinds anyone in front of you, doesnt matter if its just your low beams, they are still bright as hell.
    2. How the hell do you see a compact pickup (ranger/s10) or even a sedan over that hood??!!

They originated when poor boys in NC and SC that couldn’t afford lift kits would crank the torsion bars up on their chevys to fit 33s on stock wheels. You didn’t have to do anything to the rear to fit 33s.

Makes sense. A buddy of mine was gonna do that to his Silverado when we were in high school...
And that was almost 15 years ago. Damn, I'm old! X3

      False.
They wanted to mimic the trophy truck look where the front sits slightly higher to the rear. Idiots took the look to far in an attempt to 1 up the other guy by saying my truck is "squated" more than yours.

I think something you’re missing is that messing with the angle of your front end like that hugely increases the chance of fatality from a pedestrian crash. Solid hood emblems were a problem. These trucks would hit you in the chest and put you under them.

Not to mention if truckboi rear ends that Miata that he can't see, the front of the truck is going right over it. What would've been a fairly minor fender bender quickly turns into a lot of expensive damage.

It is nanny state BS and you know it. While NC is at it, they need to outlaw stairs, cracks on sidewalks, uneven sidewalks, motorcycles, scooters, bathtubs, and everything else that can be fatal.

Tbh, you didn't touch on my biggest issue with squatted trucks. You know, when they don't adjust the headlights when they adjust the trucks so now regular lights have the affect of serious high beams and blind everyone
