  • In this talk with Caverly Morgan from the Wednesday Night Meditation + Talk, the focus was about the power of being able to direct your attention. She offered a teaching from her book The Heart of Who We Are: Realizing Freedom Together.
Some key points that she covered in this meditation and talk are:
    • The notion that what we are unconscious to silently governs us.
    • The fallout of identifying with thoughts.
    • Recognizing a common block that keeps us stuck: the belief that “Whatever I do isn’t enough.”
    • Seeing clearly how habituated the attention is to wander about without direction.
    • Seeing that you have the innate, internal capacity to place your attention where you want it to be. To redirect. To be in choice. The result? Being empowered.
    • The way in which you are not your thoughts.
    • Exploring the ways your attention is habituated to move.
    • Asking the question: “What leads towards suffering and what leads away?”
    • Unpacking how energy follows attention.
    • A concentration breath practice (dental floss breath) that helps clear the body, mind, and energetic system.

I love talks and building mindfulness/attention but I feel in every talk about the mind, the importance of being in the body and feeling the emotions and sensations with a sense of safety needs to be mentioned. I did so much with working on my mind only to not get very far until I then learned to feel my feelings (I was emotionally repressed since childhood) and learned to be in my body and feeling and be ok with all emotions and sensations). Doing all this work I healed from lifelong depression and anxiety issues, chronic pain and more. For me working with the mind has been very important, but nothing really worked until I started working with the body also (Somatic Experiencing, ISDTP, IFS).

I disagree with the advice to the guy going through the run around at the pharmacy to "change his story," For me, I would need to allow and feel frustration (Anger/fight response) in the body and acknowledge that is frustrating to have to do 20 things and all those mishaps just to get his inhaler. It takes a minute to acknowledge our feelings and go into the body and feel the fight response (make a fist and feel and say "I am angry, frustrated or whatever," better than trying to create a new story, fighting thoughts etc. I feel like her advice was almost spiritual bypassing.

I hear what you are saying, but largely she was reflecting back what he himself said. She did acknowledge the situation and also encouraged the larger view…that’s a significant aspect of non-duality. It is holding space for all of it, not either/or.
I didn’t feel she was encouraging spiritual bypassing…although I could see how someone might infer as much. Take a listen again, with an open mind to what she says & maybe what he also said. He dismissed his own experience a bit, I did notice that. However, we can be frustrated and hold the larger picture, if we aren’t overwhelmed by the cognitive dissonance of it all.
I agree very much with the admitting and fully feeling how we feel. We do need to be cautious about not letting that become the stopping point, or patterned way, however. Often, people get hooked by their sympathetic nervous system (the neurotransmitters released can be an addictive “go to” unconsciously) and keep riding that bus. The more we see the survival reaction, in an observer way, the quicker we can detach from any subsequent stories & further biochemical releases (and the neuroplastic pattens that can become further entrenched).
