Thank you so much for this video. I was looking for answers as to where Adobe Color Themes went and its alternatives. It's a confirmation that there isn't any alternative as easy as it used to be.
THANK YOU! I have been so exasperated since many available tutorials still give instructions for using color themes inside of Photoshop! I hope that everyone complains and that Adobe eventually will change it back again. Thank you again!
A belated thank you, Helen, for making this video. I bet the “technical issue” for Adobe is that they wanted to make the functionality the same for the mobile apps as it is for the desktop applications. A shame that that has to come at a cost to us desktop users. Additionally, web browsers have historically (and notoriously) been inconsistent with color management over the years. That would seem to make them among the last places you would think you’d choose to migrate color creation and decision making functions to.
Yes, that’s unfortunate. They discontinued the 3D tools in Photoshop and they have changed around the 3D tools in Illustrator. If it’s Illustrator that you’re using the old 3D tools are still available so let me know and I’ll send you to a video that shows you how to find them. Unfortunately in Photoshop they’re gone and won’t come back.
Thank you. I'm going through a video class now which just barely predates this removal. I've been searching for themes for like an hour only to just find this out here.
I’m so happy to hear this video helped you Evan. I myself have a lot of videos that relied on the old tool and which now have big gaps in them for my students!
I was right in the middle of two summer classes - Photoshop and Illustrator - when I got this update. I was freaking out! Not sure whose idea this was, but they need to find a new job.
Great explanation Helen for the unexplainable. As I learn Photoshop and look back at what 'used to be' with the Colour Themes, its hard to understand Adobe's thought process (or am I being too generous to suggest they had one). Two steps forward and one giant step back it seems but, you came to the rescue with a lifeline, thank you
@@HelenBradley The motivation is very easy to see through. Having everything inside one app (Photoshop) is contrary to their CC direction and bad for business. Splitting everything up in different packages across the CC creates more dependencies for the user and allows Adobe more control. But don't complain - that's what you get for supporting a concept like CC - people have been warning about these developments for years now. I've boycotted Adobe for almost 5 years, but seeing that i was in the minority, i finally gave up. Now we have to live with it.
It is a changing world isn't it Marc? Luckily there are some great alternatives available for people who don't want to support Adobe any longer. The Affinity suites are pretty good.
@@HelenBradley Yes, i use Affinity Designer and Publisher for logo design, layouts etc, and Photoshop + Lightroom for my photography work. Illustrator has horrible ergonomics, Designer has already surpassed it in that regard (couple missing features, still, but there are good workarounds/replacements). Oh and luckily, for video work, i'm also Adobe-free with DaVinci Resolve, which is miles above Premiere anyway.
Hi Helen, thank you for the tutorial. When I found the message in PS I thought it was gone for good. Personally, I find this new workflow a lot easier than the previous version. If one is online all the time (most of us are), it does not make sense to have anything offline. Quite frankly these days I don't even think of what is online or offline. It is just 'there". Granted, if the connection is interrupted I am dead in the water. However, this entire past year I had two brief power failures, but not a single internet connection issue. The only thing that irks me in this situation is that Adobe opens a 1/9 column window with 5 or so words in it, to tell me what they don't do anymore. They could use the space to say "we don't do it this way anymore. This is how to do it now". And describe what you just did. Adobe has great products, but they document them very poorly. IMHO, of course.
Thank you for sharing! I'm 6 months late on knowing. Thank you for sharing an alternative way to add a theme to our color library on our apps... this is an inconvenience for sure. Hopefully they bring something new because a lot of us are downers about it :(
Helen, I love your videos and I was wondering, will you make the switch to affinity designer and photo mainly because Adobe keeps getting more expensive and with less features? I would love to switch and I would love to see videos on it if you decide to make the change
You make a good point here. Right now I don’t plan on making the transition away from Adobe illustrator but that may well change in the future. If and when I do subscribing to my channel is the best way to be made aware of those new videos.
That would be great Abba - do you have a link to this information? I have looked and I can't find it so, right now, I am not holding out any hope for it. I would so love to be wrong though.
You are so going to hate this answer - it’s not there in Photoshop - just in Illustrator. In Photoshop you have to bring in the colors individually. Sucks huh?
I'm finding the colors are not coming up the right color in illustrator. I'll click a yellow from the theme I have chosen and it changes the color of my logo to green.
That’s soooo weird. A question for you - what color space is your document? Maybe if you’re using CMYK try changing to RGB just to see if it is the color space that is causing the issue.
Please help. In the latest version of photoshop I don't have the option to add to swatches. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the colors into swatches. Its driving me mad!
@@HelenBradley hi Helen, thankfully I have all the astute graphics plugins before they went to subscription so they're a real bonus, so CS6 may be old but it'll be around for a while, still quite a few of us that use it that don't want subscription based.
What if you don't see it in...... Wow its July. I just got it 2022 and I couldn't see it in my windows dropdown to follow a Envato illustrator course. I called Adobe and they said it should still be there but my phone went dead.
I think Adobe doesn't know their own product! Check out this article, from Adobe: helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/eos-color-themes.html The panel is gone! It is in older versions of Illustrator but not functional. So you need to find another solution, it's not coming back any time soon. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
@@HelenBradley I can't imagine why they would do such a thing, this was a very big part of my curricular that i taught my students, Color management. Now I guess they would have to switch to "Pantone connect" which is a free plugin for illustrator and photoshop with limited cloud features. This is horrible,
I do it because it is easier to see what is going on in videos. It's harder to read white text on a black background for viewers. Simply, I do it for you!

How about COLORIMPACT?

Yes, I am not sure what the reasoning was but it seems flawed to me. And, yes, you are so right, browsers and colours aren't a great match!
Thank you. Not only they discontinued the color theme, but also 3D tools ...

Thank you Helen! I didn't know this option had expired either. I wonder what made them decide to eliminate the themes panel.

Shockingly shortsighted. I do not see the add to swatch options for colour themes. Is there a setting in preferences I must select?

You can't do it in Photoshop - you have to add each colour one at a time. It's different to Illustrator.
Great, but doesn't apply to CS6 unfortunately. only jpeg
I'm sorry about this Carina, CS6 is unfortunately getting a bit old and you are missing a few useful features. But it is still a great program!
