I learned from Ron Polk's Baseball Playbook, and what he teaches is that 1B comes into the infield in case it would be better to cut off the throw home and throw behind either R1 rounding third or the BR rounding second. SS goes to cover second as soon as 2B relays the ball home. LF comes in to back up a potential throw from 1B to 3B.
Love the comment on the trail. No reason for 1st baseman to stay there once the batter goes to second. One small thing I would add - at lower levels you may want the SS to be lead on the throw on both sides because on some teams the SS is only one that has the arm to make the cut throw. Coaches - do not be afraid to modify to to strength of the team.
I was the second baseman, weak arm, on my slow pitch team, our shortstop had a rocket launcher for an arm if he had time he would take the throw.
Unfortunately, the same exact thing happened to the Braves last night and Harris II got gunned at 4. Same exact situation. To the dodgers’ credit, they nailed a textbook relay. Damnit
We use this exact cut play for plays to home and we don't care about the guy at second as long as he doesn't advance to third we're happy so the cutoff man (1B) accomplishes that as a deterrent at the very least. On relay/trailer plays to third we will have the first basemen follow the runner to 2nd because we don't need a cutoff man for that play to third.
My old high school coach, coached for the Marlins short season A ball after our high school season. This is exactly how we did the double cut on a guy on first. 1st base only was a trailer with no one on.

My son's 14u travel coach teaches him to setup near mound as in video to relay or cutoff throws to home from RF. Trailing the runner only occurs on hits to CF or LF. My son is a lefty 1B.
I think the first baseman at the mound is the proper play for either RC or LC. Especially at lower levels where it is more likely that the first baseman may actually have to cut the ball and throw home. The first baseman could read the play and then cover second if there is obviously no throw home
I love it Matt. I'm thinking right now might be too heavy to teach my 10s foing into 11u. Of course the piggyback and catcher lining up... the 1st baseman trailing will be gradually worked once they nail down the basics.

Hey, I've never understood "why" the runner at 1st base can't see that the BALL is an uncatchable ball in the gap!
Notice (and this happens all the time) at 1:33 in video, the runner at 1st doesn't really "run" or sprint until after
4 or 5 steps. Like he want the "see" the ball hit the ground 1st before achieving full speed! Those 4 or 5 "jog" steps
are the difference at to why he's out at home plate! Fans see runners "hesitantly" jogging to the next base until
the ball actually hits the ground...losing time and distance to the next couple of bases. We can understand that
if the ball is caught and he's around 2nd then that's embarrassing. But sometimes the ball is CLEARLY in the gap
and there's no need to hesitate or be so ginger about running the bases. Besides, what's the 3rd base coach doing?
If the 3rd base coach can't see, that the ball will drop, then he shouldn't be at 3rd base. The runner looks at the
3rd base coach, and the 3rd base coach SHOULD be showing he wants that runner to go, go go! Or get a different
3rd base coach that can "read" the ball better! Or we (fans) wrong! It's so hard not to "boo" our own team for
being to timid and get thrown out at home, because runner/3rd base coach are "playing-it-safe". Then they wonder
why the team is under 500 or at the bottom. Please enlighten us on why 3rd base coach can't read an obvious
"hit" in the gap and have the runners moving at full speed! thx.
In a past video, Matt describes that at MLB level (and even the minors) the 3rd base coach is not telling runners when to go or not when they themselves are much more capable of knowing their abilities. This is based upon many factors but noise is a real issue.
The third base coach isn't going to communicate to a runner on first if the ball is down! On this play, at they level on the full size field, the runner needs to read the hit and the outfielders. 3rd base coach isn't going to do anything until it's: go for home, or stay at third. Not sure why you think 3rd base coach should be directing the runner, starting on first, how to run to third? I've heard youth coaches micro manage base runners like that, but it's wrong.

It would be the same way if the ball was hit in the left center gap but this time the second baseman would be the first cut off man. The shortstop will be the trailing cut off man or backup the cut off man and first base man usually would trail the runner that is going to second. Now there are times that the first baseman or the third baseman will be the cutoff but only if the ball is shallow in the outfield and if there are runners in scoring position. But teams also have their first baseman as the backup cutoff man if the ball was down the right field line
Left fielder should be running to towards the infield.
Best part, LF didnt move one step.
He should back up 3rd base I case the runner attempts to advance
He paid for his ticket he doesn’t have to move if he doesn’t want to.
This is what is wrong with baseball today, almost zero aggressive base running.
The hitter stopped at 2nd base when no one is covering second, why stop?
He very easily could have went half way, if ball is thrown to third, he easily could have
made it back to second base, why, because there is still no one covering second.
Horrible baserunning by the hitter.
Guessing before seeing the answer. Setup in line to relay to home, to try to prevent runner from scoring. I am assuming that a double can't be prevented.
I have a question coach! If I were to send a college coach a video of me hitting shots off 100 on the machine would that impress the coach and possibly gain me interest?
So they through out the runner at home and keep the batter to a double. Great defense guys. Definitely first base is useless on first base from the initial hit.
