One of the greatest yet under rated drummers of my time!
Perkins has his own style. It is very primal, tribal, and a warring sound. His range is diverse and wide. Arguing over who the greatest drummers are is like arguing about what's the best flavor of ice cream; impossible. The affinity for sound is in the eye of the beholder.
you mean in the ear of the beholder.
We can all agree he doesn't suck
All these arguments over who the "best" drummer is are utterly childish. Be glad these drummers exist and play what they play since that's what inspires us. We all benefit.
Jane's Addiction may be my favorite band of all time. It wasn't about any one member. The planets aligned and something magical happened (ala Zep, The Police, etc, etc). This solo does nothing for me, but my first live Jane's show was one of the greatest days that I will never forget. The best bands have a symbiotic relationship musically. And then eventually egos take the train of the rails. But I digress.
They played 1% at a recent show. I lost my shit!!!
jane's addiction is my all time favorite band and stephen is the reason why. been a fan since '86 and these posts hit it dead on the head. you never hear him mentioned with top drummers but we know how great he is. thanks for posting this vid
Perkins is amazing. He has a very Buddy Rich like quality to his soloing when it comes to the intensity and passion he puts into the performance. Great drummer.
Looks like he's performing this solo at my 8th grade talent show. Although Mr. Perkins played amazing and is a very talented young man, St. Thomas the Apostle K-8 strictly forbids non-students from performing. Thank you for your time.
He is the greatest. I don't need to hear silly arguments or that he's underrated. He's right on top for me, baby. 🔥
A pleasure to watch and hear.
Steve Perkins is the best drummer i ever saw live - same as Dave Navaro is the best guitar player i ever saw. Saww them at brixton academy years ago & in the middle of three days Perkins did his drum solo, but carried it on, the rest of the band stopped playing & just watched him. When he stopped after a couple of minutes Perry Farrel just said "you finished?" & they carried right on with the song - whole place erupted
I always liked him in Jane’s Addiction, but I didn’t know what a technical badass he is until I found this.
Incredible! U can't take yr eyes off of him; he's mesmerizing when he plays the drums.
Backbone of Janes.
This is the reason why a song like Chip Away by Jane's Addiction is always Fucking awesome live. Just to think he got all other members to play there simple piece of drums in order for all of them to bang it out.
Holy shit! Stephen Perkins is my number one drummer and Jane's my number one band of all time and there are so many WTF moments of this performance, but 5:29 is mind boggling!!!
In the beginning of my drum career I thought he was so fast( he truly is fast tho). And I thought I would need to be really fast to play his stuff but I realize now a lot of its independence and African rhythms that I have to learn thanks Stephen
Drummers, Guitar players to Bass players, it like music its self. Everyone has different tastes, just like those who like Rock and those who like Country and so on. I enjoy a lot of Drummers and put them on my favorites. Stephen Perkins is one of the best, he's been doing it since age 8 and he's in his 40s. Every time I see him he puts a different spin on a solo. Neil Peart had the same one for years and he's one of the very best. Stephen is right up there with Neil and the others!
Perkins is a bad ass
he's fuckin awesome on drums.
Perkins is the best drummer in rock IMHO
Heart + Soul.
Are you talking about when it looked like he put an upside don cymbal on a tom in the middle?
❤
some sort of bongo t think but i could be mistaken.
Whats that thing to his right he was playing?
It sounds to me like a really small kettle drum with one of those pedals at the bottom to make that Wah Pedal sound; could be wrong.
Hum0ng0us it is
Muito Bom do Car...lho!
Favorite drummer but he's not much of a Drum Solo person. You're not going to get a Dave Wekyl style solo from Perk. It's more tribal and repetition...which isn't a bad thing......
o:
Three people have utterly no taste.
Sorry man but this is very average. really boring until 6 minutes, then same repetitive figure. Any band he started he played in. Who ever asked him to be their drummer? Really, the guy know 3 - 4 figures and repeats, Average musician.
Jeff Thompson you re such an idiot :))
... And he's humble enough to be the first person to admit that. His playing is interesting and unorthodox, that is all, which is why it's admirable. No training needed ;)
