      2:03 - Crane'sn't sadistic! He's a warning about overindulging in an obsession. He's a scientist that let his desire to learn about fear consume him to the point of abandoning his morals. *He was on his way to become the Psychiatric Florence Nightingale, but his addiction turned him into Mengele.*
      4:55 - Says he's sadistic but shows him talking about SCIENCE!
      8:20 - When one's desire to learn about something goes too far & one seeks to be further consumed by their obsession.
      10:10 - I agree. It makes the Scarecrow better & more humane.
      13:50 - That's who the Scarecrow is. He's a doctor that wanted to improve the field of psychiatry, but let his research consume him to the point of addiction.

      Yes that’s true! Probably my favorite example of that power in effect was when the joker personality of Batman in the Arkham knight video game was exposed to the fear toxin. It exposed that deep down Joker is not completely free of fear despite what some think. His fear is to be forgotten by the people of Gotham, to have no one mourn his for him when he’s gone. Fitting since he’s a very vain diva of a supervillain.

    As for my personal favorite. I think blackest night and Gotham knighted are my ideal depictions of scarecrow for my personal head cannon. Addicted to fear and desperate to feel/spread it. But I just as much enjoy *The fear State* and that one part in *Legends of the dark knight* as they also portray how a guy like cran could feel he’s doing a good thing despite the dastardly methods he uses. Plus his designs are AMAZING there!

    Mistress of Fear. I've yet to actually read it, but that is a real humdinger. Becky and Johnny are the same, bullied geeks, of course Crane would want to help her... in his own way. Almost a shame Becky never became Scarecrow's Harley Quinn, but short of depicting Crane as a fear worshiping cult leader, I find he works best alone. Fear has no friends after all...

      It would have been cool if she became his protégé, like a terror dynamic duo. It also could have made for a cool story at some later point in the timeline where she becomes the new Scarecrow when Crane dies/retires and goes up against a Dick Grayson or Tim Drake Batman.

    • @Frredster
      @Frredster 2 года назад +1

      I'm glad Becky never became Scarecrow's Harley Quinn. If she did, she'd just be Harley Quinn, 2.0, and that's boring. Scarecrow and Becky could have an entirely different dynamic or something. And I can't really see Becky taking up the Scarecrow mantle at some point. She uses a cane, you really think she'd be able to fight Batman, or other superheroes? Unlikely.
      Edit: and he never really helped Becky in the first place. His "helping" her was just an accident, a byproduct of the fear he was trying to cause her to have. Even his offering Becky to be the Mistress of Fear was done with one goal in mind: to ruin her.

    One of my favorite Scarecrow stories has gotta be Year One. Not only did I enjoy the story but God, the artwork was gorgeous to me. I only dream to develop my artstyle close to that. The story was also really good. I sorta gave Crane a new backstory while also keeping everything from his old one. Basically his old backstory but with added details. Like the addition of Grandma Keeny and how she'd cruelly punish Jonathon for the simplest things like reading a book. And how Jonathon learning how to control fear because of her. I'm terrible at explaining stuff but you should really check it out if you haven't already. It's probably not the best Scarecrow story out there but it's number 1 for me!

  • @rodomolina7995

    Now this one I've been waiting for a long time.
    Even though you have already talked about all these stories in the past, it was interesting to see the way you ranked them.
    I'm very happy to see Kings of Fear and Concert of Fear made it into the top 5 as those are also some of my personal favourites, the former has a near perfect characterisation of Crane and (in my opinion) the second best design Scarecrow has ever sported, and the latter is just a lot of fun.
    It's surprising how low Sinister Straws and Cycle of Violence have come to be in comparison to their placements in the original top, specially the latter. While I understand Cycle has it flaws, like for instances feeling too excessively edgy, I still think it's a highly enjoyable read with a great Scarecrow origin and my single favourite Scarecrow moment ever, this being when the little girl he kidnapped gives him a drawing of them together, i don't know, it was just a surprisingly touching scene in such a gory story and it added a lot of humanity to Jonathan as he is actually kinda moved by this act, he may be a psycho but he's still got a heart... just a bit.

    Fear for Sale might be my favourite Scarecrow story solely for the scene where he goads the drugged-up racing driver into jumping to his death then walks away laughing. I got chills reading that part. Two of my favourites not on this list are Gothtopia from the New 52 and his chapter in the Heart of Hush storyline.

  • @taichimokubaful
    @taichimokubaful 2 года назад +6

    I think No Man's Land Scarecrow is my favorite.
    The thing is I think the Scarecrow must not be sympathetic or understandable by a normal person, to be an effective villain.
    The writer should be able to communicate the mind of a torturer that does what he does just because he's good at that, because doing things that you are good at makes you feel happy and satisfied with your life.
    The Scarecrow just happens to be naturally good at terrorizing and manipulating people.
    Not that a 100% bullied Scarecrow doesn't work for me. But I think that the "bullied" should be just a trigger to make Crane realize how good he's at terrorizing people. If I could rewrite his origin, I would give him the role of the bully: initially he is the bully target and also with an psychologically abusive family member, because he is physically weak and seems the perfect target for that; but, after reflecting on how not scary and unefficient his tormentors really are (since they couldn't even break a skinny little boy like himself) he starts to understand how fear works and counter-tormenting them in more subtle ways, driving them to insanity.
    He is... A natural. A monster unleashed by random acts of cruelty. A Serial-terrorist, if you want.
    I think the Scarecrow should be way more on the "Unredeemable Evil" side than on the "Sympathetic and Unlucky" side of rogues.

    • @GreaterGrievobeast55
      @GreaterGrievobeast55 2 года назад +2

      That is a pretty interesting perspective on the character. And an imposing reaction to being treated poorly. More out of a need to improve the method than revenge.
      Ever still I sort of like the notion that Crane believes people and even himself is better off with terror in their hearts. Like he’s been made to be scared for so long in his life its made him a master at terrifying others due to self experience. And worse, he sees the absence of fear as a perversion. A misfortune to be corrected. In no mans land’s I think that perspective works in how he’s content with the church mob killing him, but is absolutely distraught when they forgive him.

    There are two stories that I think should’ve been on this list, identity crisis, and god of fear, since they were both written by the same guy Alan Grant. The first story shows the first time Tim drake ever put on the robin costume, Plus scarecrow scheme is pretty clever, he phone calls random people and then mails them strange masks with specially design chemicals that turn them psychotic and loose on the city. The second story from Shadow of the bat feature scarecrow, starting a cult of kids, wearing costumes similar to him committing crimes and causing all kinds of problems. One of the kids is actually the son of one of his murder victims, and since this took place during nightfall, if features Jean-Paul Valley as Batman and he has to deal with this situation. combined over the fact that Anarchy becomes a problem for bats too in the story and you got a fun read.

    Hi, Rogues. I am surprised that neither my favorite nor second favorite made the cut! My favorite story is "Six Days of The Scarecrow" in Detective Comics#503 (1981). My second favorite is the somewhat meta story that transitions Batman from camp to the more murder mystery and noir, " Batman's Evil Eye" in Detective Comics#389(1969).

    My list would have God of Fear from Knightfall, The Fearless Man from the Gotham City Villains Special that came out this year, and the Cowardly Lot by James Tynion IV. God of Fear is great cause I love when Scarecrow is written with a kind of god complex, super entertaining. And his methods are fun, we get to see up close and personal fear inflicted on his mind controlled minions while city wide panic is inflicted on everyone else. The Fearless Man I love for its cult-imagery, and how its fixation on "what would we do without fear" reminds me of Fear for Sale. The art is very Mignola-esque which fits Scarecrow VERY WELL. And then the Cowardly Lot just feels like the natural progression from Fear of Faith, a city-wide scarecrow attack without any fear toxin. Just some well placed scarecrow dummies in secure locations. I never see any stories really leaning into that aesthetic part of Scarecrow. And while his design might not be for everyone, I love it. Plus I'm just a sucker for James Tynion IV's writing.
    Honorable mention for the Man-Bat solo series, Scarecrow was trying out subliminal audio in place of fear gas and it's super freaky, his characterization was good but there was something keeping it from really hitting it for me. But also I'm not sure I've even read 10 Scarecrow stories.
