I went to a Patti LaBelle concert in the late 80s, and in all my life I have NEVER seen anyone pour herself out so completely as Patti did. I fully expected her to collapse from exhaustion by the end. It was remarkable.
Patti is the baby in her family. All three of her older sisters died in their 40's of either cancer or diabetes. This is my song and the emotion she bring to it is out this world.
@@ValenciaGamble Yeah, and she always talked about being nervous when she got to her 40's because she is diabetic. She thought she would have met her end by the time she got to that age range because of what happened to her sisters.
Actually, she was the second from the youngest. She had a young sister, Jackie, who died in '89 from cancer as well. She actually filmed the music video for "If You Asked Me To" the day after her funeral.
This is amazing but I feel like the one where she is wearing a white suit is her best rendition of that song. I went to her concert at Staten island all the way from the Philippines a few years ago and it was worth it!
honestly this video is my favorite version. It's easy to do the loud high notes but her pianissimos are better than a lot of professional opera singers.
Regarding your comments about backup singers... I recommend that you watch the film "20 Feet From Stardom" which is about backup singers. It is so good, nominated for an Oscar (can't remember if it won). One of the singers featured is Lisa Fischer, who you reacted to a couple weeks ago ("How Can I Ease the Pain"), and you will recall how exceptional she is. You will really like the movie.
@@ValenciaGamble Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Patti owns the most knockout and show stopping version of this song. She has been performing it since the 1960s when she was in her 20s and fronting her own girl group, PATTI LABELLE AND THE BLUEBELLES. There are performances of it on youtube. You can literally find 60 years of her performing this song right on youtube.
"The background singers are so good" I think Luther Vandross started as someone's background singer & Lisa Fischer (How Can I Ease the Pain) started out as Luther's background singer.
Your reactions give me life. Subscribed! By the way, check out her tiny desk concert. You won't be disappointed. Debbie is still singing with her too. =)
I beg of you to do research on your people before you speak this one person you don't tuck that's the one and only one Patti labelle every one love her children and the world and I do so very much wow thank you God for patti.
@@MrBjorn6 thank you for the compliment 🤣😘 we must stand in the gap for our Queen if we won't who will?! I would love and hope for someone to stand in the gap for me when I'm not present or can't speak for myself.

THIS is a live performer!! Ain’t NOBODY touching Patti live! Check out the performance of the same song when she’s wearing the white pants suit.
Very charming commentary. So happy to see the young folks enjoying old school music.
The background singer is Debbie Henry
Debbie has caused me to deplete my Kleenex supply.... whew

Omg wow! I had no idea that’s insane that she even got through that!

@@kevinsorrow58 Lord does it really matter??
Just imagine… that’s ONE SONG of a whole concert! She gives 100% to every song
Patti could sing the phonebook & I'd be here for it.
Had you seen Ms Patti at a younger age you'd see her jumping around the stage and rolling on the floor 🤣

Please more Patti reaction vids! She’s such a legend!!!
That next suggested video version of the song, she’s about 10 years older and quite possibly went HARDER.

One of the few songs she wrote

Patti Labelle - On My Own (Official Music Video) ft. Michael McDonald
She wrote this song for her son and years later made it a gospel song ❤️😊
No competition from then and now, no passion today. Patti is number 2 behind Whitney to me EVER❤️😊
The Back up singer name is Debbie Henry (Philly born and raised like Patti)
HAVE YOU HEARD HER SING OVER THE RAINBOW? IF NOT YOU MUST!!!!!!
Like the song “somewhere over the rainbow” or she has a song with that title?

The song was "This Christmas"l.
It wasn't entirely her fault. No one was doing their job.
You speak so well and very pretty
Are you white?!
Ms. Debbie Henry!!! Patti always let her BG singers sang!!!
The big song you know of her is Lady Marmalade
You should do a reaction to Patti labelle singing the sane song dressed in the white pant suit

Yes. Lisa Fischer background for Luther. Luther background for Robert Flack. She would have him do all her sound checks before performing.
Yes, Luther vandross was Roberta flacks background singer. In fact, she was the one who encouraged Luther to step out as a solo singer

Agree that you should watch Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and Lady Marmalade. But her song New Attitude is also a great one.
