So, about absinthe. I'm a big fan of cocktails and their history, I'm kind of a nerd for this stuff. That spirit has a rather wild history and a whole lot of folklore that has grown up around it. It was banned in several countries, though notably only ones where it had been popular, as well as the US, largely beginning in the 1910s for a whole host of reasons. Around the 1990s, a revival occurred in countries where it was legal (notably the UK and Czechia, neither country ever banned it) and the bans were reversed, as the EU had made it legal with some limitations in 1988 and other countries followed suit, like the US in 2007. There are a lot of rumors and misinformation about that drink, so just to be entirely clear, no, you will not fail a drug test for drinking absinthe. Unless it's a sobriety test, and even then, not really any more than any other hard spirit.
So what actually is absinthe? Simply put, it's an anise-flavored spirit made with several herbs, including wormwood, similar to many other herbal spirits like Italian amaro, digestifs like Jägermeister, or other anise spirits like pastis or ouzo. For those unfamiliar, anise is the flavor of black licorice and general "licorice" flavor.
Absinthe is frequently portrayed as a hallucinogen and a dangerous psychoactive drug and has been since the late 1890s to 1910s when bans were first instituted. I won't dive too deeply into the history of this, but suffice to say that the bulk of the actual issue here is more of a "Reefer Madness" style frenzy that began in France and spread outward. Due to these bans and the subsequent drop in popularity, absinthe retained its "Green Fairy" nickname and reputation for decades. However, it was never demonstrated that absinthe was dangerous in any way or actually caused hallucinations to begin with.
Why do people claim stuff like absinthe triggering drug tests? Because thujone, a chemical found in wormwood, has hallucinogenic properties and is chemically similar to THC, the active chemical in cannabis. Though, for what its worth, the rumors usually claim that absinthe will trigger an LSD test due to the hallucinogenic properties. Modern absinthe has legal limitations for the amount of thujone that can be present. But, it is important to note that even historical absinthe never had enough of that chemical to actually cause hallucinations, and today modern absinthe either has no wormwood at all or, if you're spending a few hundred dollars on a bottle, a very trace amount beneath the legal limit. In short, you cannot today (and likely never could) get a psychedelic high off of the spirit, nor can it trigger a drug test.
To go deeper into the history, back in the 1910s when the spirit was banned, it was linked to a unfortunate murder-suicide amongst other crimes in a series of smear campaigns. This was generally because the drink was popular among the poorer population of France, particularly those of a "bohemian" inclination, as it lacked the pompous snobbery associated with wine and the upper classes who preferred it. That was combined with early, very flawed chemical tests on wormwood oil, which had a much higher amount of thujone, to "prove" its dangers. French elites and the wine industry both pushed heavily for its banning, though ironically France would be the last to do so, outlawing the spirit in 1914. Generally, as the smear campaigns and poor reputation spread, other countries banned the less-popular drink more swiftly. Even the US had already banned the spirit by that point in 1912, though that was mostly due to its association with immigrants and was part of the early Prohibition movements.
As for how to drink absinthe, traditionally there is a rather fancy setup involving a special glass, a slotted spoon placed above it, and a sugar cube you drip cold water over until it is dissolved and the rest of the glass filled. You can get the same effect by pouring yourself some absinthe, adding some sugar or simple syrup, and a generous ratio of water. I've seen some recommending going as far as 1:10 absinthe/water. Generally speaking, this was a typical way of serving hard spirits back in the day and to an extent still is, if you consider cocktails a sort of offshoot of this kind of watering down. There's also a Bohemian method involving setting the sugar cube on fire and lighting the drink, which makes the overall cocktail stronger, but this is generally considered a modern gimmick as it destroys the flavor of the spirit, which, for the price of a bottle, you probably don't want to do.

Wow, that was informative. Pretty interesting stuff to hear about in detail! I actually have a question for you, if you don't mind.
As far as diluting spirits went, historically speaking, I've heard it told that this was done, beyond getting a more palatable flavor, to also spread the drink out into more sittings to be enjoyed longer, and also to make the water safe to drink with the alcohol's disinfectant properties. I've always wondered if these claims were mainly truth or fable, so if you have insight into this, I'd be interested to hear your take on it!

    • @cerberus0225
      @cerberus0225 2 года назад +5

      @@zalgo1391 In a nutshell, yes.
For example, I know that many naval vessels used barrel-proof spirits mixed with their stored fresh water in order to make it "safe" to drink. Granted, this water usually had sat for so long that it was full of algae, so I can't speak to how safe we'd consider it today. Later on limes(or other citrus, but most often limes) would be added to prevent scurvy. During the days when that was most common, the 1800s roughly, the British took to using gin (one of the popular spirits of the time) to make the lime juice more drinkable and the proto-gimlet cocktail was born. The sailors, meanwhile, had rum rations instead, which became grog. That's just one example that sprang to mind.
More generally, alcohol was indeed fermented in order to render a liquid safe to drink and easier to preserve in times when fresh water was a luxury. There's a lot of debate about when distillation was first invented, how effective it was at various periods, etc, but at least for the western world and our modern hard spirits, 13th century Italy would first adapt distillation technology (imported from the Middle East) to create fortified wines. Alternatively, Eastern Europe was already using distillation to produce early, wine-derived alcohol, but the evidence there is scant. The use spread through monasteries, who created medicinal tonics, many of which would become the basis for various liqueurs today. Amaro, Benedictine, Chartreuse, and really all herbal liqueurs were developed this way, and many were administered as medical treatments. As this technology spread, the distilled alcohol was eventually known as "aqua vitae", a cure-all, and later on roughly during the 1400s things we would roughly recognize as whisk(e)y, brandy, vermouth, port, vodka, jenever, etc, begin to be described in writing. Modern gin wouldn't appear until the 17th century, while rum wasn't developed until the sugarcane plantations in the Caribbean were in full swing. Off the top of my head, mezcal and tequila were already being made in Mesoamerica before western contact, but I'm not too familiar with that history. Hope this helped!

    Okay three interesting horse facts.
1: Yes, horses can suck. It is actually an issue that can occur at farms where they will bite on fence posts, suck in air and get bloated due to the amount of air. To the point where a vet or farmer will need to medically tend to the animal.
    2. Horses can not vomit as they were not built to do so, and this is because they have such strong throat muscles.
    3. When a horse gets a small nose bleed, it looks like a murder scene. They're big animals, so they have a lot of blood.

The Arcanum is a hunter organization that gathers lore about the supernatural. I say they're "hunters" loosely because they're really more of an academic organization than an active firebrand Society of Leopold type of organization (which literally have "Deus Vult" on their coat of arms). Most of their knowledge is biased from the perspective of a normie. And as an organization they tend to be gun shy and cautious, since they've learnt from hard experience that the supernatural factions do not like them prying into their secrets. They emphasize the gathering and preservation of knowledge.

Chronicles of Darkness and World of Darkness are different rules and lore
      World uses the Storyteller system
      Chronicles uses the Storytelling system
Vampire the requiem doesn’t have blood potency, or much metaplot
Mage the ascension has avatars and consensus. Mage the awakening has the supernal and souls doing magic
Werewolf the apocalypse has fera and eco terrorists as the good guys. Werewolf the forsaken has the eco terrorists as the bad guys and the spirits hate the werewolves
Spirits are completely different in mechanics
Ghosts and wraiths are completely different
Changeling the Lost and Changeling the Dreaming are VASTLY different in terms of Arcadia and how fairies work
They are different systems and settings, not the same

I understand your thought process Airier, but you're reaching. D was not implying that he gave Marcus hints about Diablerie, he's saying that he taught him basic math and that anyone with two brain cells to rub together should realize that feeding vampires to each other is a bad idea and that should have had the common sense to consider if their strength would double or be squared. 1+1=1 or 1^1=1 don't seem sensibly intimidating until you realize those 1s represent something far more nuanced and frightening. Like superhuman undead monstrosities that feed on souls and life energy...

Tbh I think Vampires drinking the blood of other Vampires resulting in a stronger vampire made sense, I had no prior basis and had no knowledge of vampire the masquerade and i've also never got into anything else with Vampires except the Elder Scrolls, where I'm pretty sure Diablerie isnt a thing, while watching the second episode, my assumption was very much that the winner of the blood-game would become way stronger, it seemed logical to me and it definetally felt like something Markus should have at least considered as a posibility.
If anything, its another link to Magnus as, despite his curiosity being entirely justifiable, he was absolutely reckless. Even with Magnus in 40K, everyone agreed that Magnus needed to be more cautious, even those that opposed the edict of Nikea.
Also, I think most of the Emperors idiotic decisions are just a result of poorly thought out writing that various authors try to justify for various reasons, as a result, he's a caring father, an uncaring father, a genius, a fool and all manner of other things that just dont work.
If theres one thing the Emperor should not be, it's stupid, so you need a logical excuse for his massively idiotic mistakes, so they excuse it with his emotion, but then that conflicts with other things being excused by a lack of humanity.
Angrons whole situation for instance, its all very stupid, the entire point is clearly meant to be one of the two or 3 real examples of the Emperor not caring about his sons, but the only reasonable justification for Angron's existence is the Emperor has to care about Angron and not want to loose his son.
Otherwise the Emperor had literally every reason to purge Angron, he ruined his Legion, was a useless primarch, was openly treasanous and all in all, was nothing but a detriment to the Imperium from day one, so if the Emperor didnt care about his sons and only saw them as tools....its one thing to discard a useless tool, but angron was an acively detrimental tool with no use (certainly not any use that couldnt be performed better by literally any other tool).
