The talk is great. I'm in software engineering research, not databases, and it still makes sense. Loved the Map-Reduce story at 28:00 and the advice to have self-respect, and not run after the latest fad. Not even if it comes from Google.
"Amazon doesn't do any research."
I suspect that statement is false.
Paraphrasing:
1. University research is out of touch with reality.
2. Industry does not wish to fund this useless research.
3. Government needs to put more tax money into university research.
well, the speaker has a profound industry experience.
He is a co-founder of Postgres, Vertica, VoltDB and other companies.
Not every innovation can be created within the BigTech and universities should play a bigger role in the innovation process.
However the universities do not produce technical innovations anymore since the researchers there are chasing artificial metrics like "number of publications" and "h-index".
Take Postgres as an example, he and his PhD students have written the first version together while not producing that many publications.
These days creating something like Postgres in academia is impossible since all researchers are evaluated based on the number of publications.
This is quite deceitful and dishonest! Listen again to his conclusion at 49:15 and see how biased you are 🙄
@@aurelienregat-barrel9217 You could have just said "You're wrong" or "That's not correct." I wasn't being deceitful or dishonest.
It's been a while since I watched it and came to my conclusions. At your mark I hear something about inspired leadership from universities. I'll have to watch this all back through to see how that fits in.
