- Hey everyone!
It's finally time to start patching up some of the rust holes, in the cab for the little 421 Unimog.
But a bunch of things had to be done, before i could even get going on that, And just as i thought i would sart with the easy part of the rust, that also turned into a bigger project.
If you want to follow this restoration from the start, Here is a link to the First video:
• Unimog Barn-Find. part...
I have also made a playlist, for the whole build. you can find that here:

Thanks for watching!
Bright Orange!
"I'm just going to break down and cry ... again." 😂 I feel for you bro.
🤟Five beer for the Unimog restorers... 😄
14:44 you were visionaring the outcoming 🤣
Lol, i love this stile - "yeah, y'know i'm not gonna do it perfect, just some rust work here and there". And the rest of the vid is basically recreating a sizable chunk of stuff to factory, and better (the pedal mount, with those two plastic bushings that is). And yes - green will fit this one the best. Specifically the green that it's already is covered in.
Nice Work
Orange would look good. Love the channel
well done...
You're doing a great restoration. I say keep it light green.
Keep that green colour, looks good
unbelivibel handcraft...awsome job man...and greatings from austria
Great work !!
For colours I suggest tractor green and some yellow accents.
Just an idea…. Some drain holes in the lowest part of the New Floors for clean outs. Gets some rubber plugs to seal them when not in use
Yes, i do plan to make some drains. i'm just waiting till i can level the cab, to figure out where the low spots are :)
Great to see you restore this iconic vehicle. Professional and care in the restoration process.
guys like you see a problem, contemplate a possible solution and bang away..and more often than not you created a solution with gainful expertise stored for a bext time..and the editing and cut scenes are top shelf...great to see you safe and sound and happy..peace from the States..
Removes steering column. Drives away making Mog noises!
PS Bright yellow!
you should paint it the 1978 mbtrac colors, white cab, red rims, fenders, bed etc.
Unimogs are sick
Nothing is better for stability than a shop-built jig.
This little UNIMOG is a favorite project, and I can hardly wait to see her put back together and back in her element.
As for paint? Since she's going to be for agricultural use, I think John Deere green would look really good.
Well, in 'Merica, sure! JD green and yellow! 😃
Very good panel work there, truck is already starting to look nice.🚚
I say go for a darker shade of blue. I was going to say the Mercedes-Benz olive-green, but there are many green Unimogs out there.🐞 Military colours........it will look like the army is out there on exercise.🍃
I know it is early for body paint but a Hunter green would look good on it
Mercedes benz 'moss green' could look kool
Hello. Good video. I suggest textured black matt bed liner stone chip paint. Thanks.
Easy when you have the right tools aye ha ha , got a bit of work there mate
I love these videos!
Multi talented God bless you and enjoy your life 😊
Snow camo would look cool on a unimog 👍
Dude, service orange ( gunmetal green optional)... I insist. Much love from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
🇦🇺Paint it dark brown
great work again
I enjoy the unimog welding and fabrication repairs
Hi, thank you for making these videos. I am learning much stuff from them to use it on my 404 restoration project. Currently I am at process of painting frame so I am behind about 6-9 months from your perspective but this way I don't have to struggle about thinking how things should be do because of you. I would like also make a request for filming restoration of square supports and steel sheets under doors of cabin and back corner of the cabin. I have similar rust problems with my cabin as you do and I would like to see how did you managed to repair/restore them. Thank you very much for your work and afford of making these videos they are very helpful. :) PS: as for color suggestion of the cabin I thought about light blue color but I not so sure.
Thanks
Thank you very much, Alan!
paint the cab in the same grey or darker grey as the frame/chassis
I love unimogs and I love to fabricate sheetmetal parts so this video was really satisfying!
Cheers from Sweden
Dear TAT.
👍👌👏 Very "weld" done! This cab will definitely be more sturdy than as it was new. I like to encourage you to record and upload all the steps. Any content is better than no content. Additionally I like the fact, that you do the metal shaping/forming only with basic tools. Nevertheless: Please kindly allow me to suggest that you get yourself a manual lever shears for sheet metal (the type with the very long handle/lever). They're not expensive but make life so much easier.
2) Although I love 💚 nearly anything that is green, I would paint the Mog in the original yellow 💛 colour. Simply because you already own more than enough green vehicles and most Unimogs on this planet are green. Personally I've never seen a yellow one. Maybe there is a tractor or truck paint existing that matches the original yellow colour.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
It's not that i don't want to film the process. i just simply didnt want to bore you viewers. and also, this is already a very time-consuming part or the project. and doing all the cemara work, just makes it take that much longer.
But since it seems a lot of you want to see more of it. i suppose i will just keep filming :)
And you are right. i really dose seem most of them are green. so maybe i should be different :)
As always, thanks for your comment, and for watching along!
A nice red would be the antidote to all the green mogs in the world, I remember seeing red ones in England many years back. Thanks for such great videos documenting the restoration of this fabulous vehicle
@@JezDavis
Red was used for Unimog fire department trucks.
@@KJOff-Road impressed with the panel repairs, don't they make floor coverings for the cab so you don't wear the paint away. l like the light green color of the cab or maybe a mid gray, boring l know. Looking forward to the next install.
I love your content, the work you perform is about as close to mfg as I've ever seen. We had a similar version of vehicle in the US Army and for the life of me can't remember it's name. I remember it being Mercedes Benz. Maybe called Cee Tractor.
We had commo versions and tool truck version and I think a welding truck version. Yes they were not our favorite but because we had limited knowledge
there of. Once again I really enjoy your content and attention to detail.
Thanks a lot! :)
And yeah, i have seen some of those. I believe they were even branded as "Freightliner" vehicles over there. (For some reason?)
It would be cool to have one of those, with all the digger-attachments :)
Thanks for watching along!
Paint it camp style! Cheers
Paint it sandy taupe it is alight brown 79 series use this colour would suit the beast 👌 awesome work from Australia 🇦🇺
toyota 3E5 red. A beautiful red color. :)
loving the video's as always i have two paint idea's,
option 1, is a red like the other unimog on cab nd bed.
option 2, similar green cab with a medium grey bed.
-mike-
I Friday with a Team Army Trucks video is always a great Friday. Made me forget all about my hectic day. Great work on the floor, I just replaced the floor on my classic mini, what a job. Keep it up buddy, and my vote for color would be a similar green to what's on the cab at present.
Er it's green currently.
How fitting. I also just started on the cab of my 421. Found a probably good 2 line trailer control valve so I also installed that on my frame.
It's a nightmare. I may got a little bit less rust than you, but the previous owner put 2-3 cm thick bondo layers on dents and all over panels and especially welds. So I have to clean all that stuff up before I get to welding it back up.
He also didn't just spot weld the panels, he tried to to whole welds with his electrode making everything even worse to fix. Furthermore he filled the b column with spray foam insulation.
It's already a nightmare to fix all that stuff he made worse before I can even get to the actual fixing.
On that note I would be interested in seeing how you fix your roof. You probably also got holes next to the gutter? I'm myself are not quite sure yet how I'm gonna do it.
One thing I have already done: Those curved panels next to your rear window are only clued in, no spots, just heat them up and they come out. For one thing it may help you clean the seals, but I went ahead and bought some of of the curved windows used for cheap.
Gives you a lot more visibility.
Aw man, that sounds like a whole lot of headaches. i have also had to fix a few vehicles like that, over the years.
I does seem a lot of people want to see more of these repairs. so i'm thinking there will also be a video with the roof.
And yeah, the gutter is also bad on this one.
And yeah, i have also been thinking of putting the little corner windows in this one. but i still havent found a set. (For a reasonable price) So it might not happen.
Thanks for watching along!
I said it before and I will say it again, you do amazing work and it a joy to watch a craftsman at work. Not sure you would like this color but paint it John Deer Green 👍
Enjoyed watching this episode as much as all your others - great metalwork! I like the idea of an agricultural vehicle in a primary green or blue from the time it was made. There is also a nice Orange I have seen some unimogs wear well.
When I was a boy I had a Unimog Matchbox toy. Looking online today, it was Matchbox #49, and came out in 1967. There were two versions, one with a tan body and green fenders, and one with a blue body and red fenders (they may be referred to today as #49A and #49B, Google them to see what I mean). Mine was the tan and green version which I think looks better, but either one may be worth considering.. Then you could buy one of the matching Matchbox toys to play with at home. 🙂
My haflinger was originally a bright yellow and sometime in the 45 years before I got it was painted a desert camo cream, it looked really nice in that livery and I think your little mogg would look good in that too.
We have an orange vintage Unimog down the street. Looks good. I was thinking a burnt orange. Love the videos. Thanks, Tim (Canada)
It might be an idea to look into Polyurea coatings. It is mostly used on the underside of vehicles and as bed liner, but maybe you could also use it on the visible parts. It sets in a textured finish which might look cool.
Looking good as always, nice work. I'd consider a battleship gray color, easy to clean, equally easy to touch up as needed.
Something tells me that you have made body panels many times before. The planning, measurements, cutting, recreation and installation says a lot to me.
I'd like to see the repair of the back cab wall and the roof in particular.
For paint color, maybe some shade of tan or Coyote brown, or a shade of grey? Maybe slate grey or concrete grey?
Honestly it would look great with a 383 green cab and black bed though.😅
Since it's basically a tractor, how about Massey-Ferguson red or John Deere green? As for the floorboards, spray-on rubber undercoating, inside and out, would prevent (or at least slow down) the rust from recurring.
Great videos as usual, I would go with an air force blue! Good luck with the renovation.
Candy purple would look nice
Perhaps a light yellow (similar to your welder) with the grey frame would be an interesting combination
As for colours i have two suggestions: sticking with the military theme by going with a light sand colour or think 90:s bmw and paint it basalt blue.
Дорогу осилит идущий.
Hello,
Another great video, I've been watching the Unimog since the beginning, you can say that I'm a Mog fan. How about "Kommunal Grün" that was a light green.
blue egee cab with any dark grey colour bed would look hella fine
CAMO. Easy to touch up after off-roading.
You have to paint it in DB 6277, it’s the original agricultural paint for the older Unimog
I have two 406 myself and db 6277 just looks amazing
Well done! you have a great attention to the detail.
John Deer Green?
Great been watching every episode 👌🏻
Flat gray 😊
i have exactly same unimog at home and cab is rusting really bad, i need to see how to fix back of the cab
👍
Wow. What a nice job! You are really bringing this little beast to life again. So let it roar in Kawasaki green.🦾
Great work starting to come together.
Great work!
I like the idea of a light green, follows your “green theme” but not to closely 😀.. why not do your panel repairs as a series of shorts videos, make them quick and easy not to much fancy editing. Folks can watch the bits they want to then. 😀👋🇬🇧
Cant you put some rubber mats on the floorpan to prevent scratching? Might even reduce some of the noise. Well a tiny bit maybe.
I sure can. and i do plan to put some mats in :)
Not sure it will do much for the noise, though. Hah :)
Olive Green and what about adding a Snorkel and external air cleaner?
Well done....I would prefer a yellow Unimog.......most are still green in any way ;-)
Nardo grey
He Team. (sorry, i don‘t know your first name😅
Take a look at the new Ludwig Weinfurtner projekt on this channel. There s a yellow Unimog 421.
It looks very nice - i think. Only a tip…….
Greatings from Germany!
R2 Tractor Tires!
Blue is the Best
If you aren't doing your military green, what about a nice military flat tan? Different but still keeping with the TAT theme. Just a thought.
Jeg synes den er sjov i de farver den har. Den ser ud som en forvokset legetøjsbil, og det kan jeg godt lide :D
Do a snow camo finish - awesome work otherwise - love the old Mogs.
That could be cool!
How about a Land Rover colour from the 1960’s or 70’s?!?
I'm working on my own 421 and I'd appreciate it if you showed how to fix the front corner of the cab at 6:25. Personally I would go for the original light green color for the cap.
I might just do that. :)
Thanks for watching along!
Royal blue
Thank you for the video! Really nice work! And I know how much time goes into cut, bend, cut, weld, grind... What do you think about classy RAL 2011 ?
Detroit Diesel Alpine Green.
Red!
Always happy to see a new upload! Love the practical and creative methods used to get and keep these rugged vehicles running. 👍
Tired of green and dont like the gold? You say this Mog is an agricultural implement, how about red? (at least for the cab)
Go for a bright pastel color, greens, blues, lavender? A few videos from Italy in these shades look great. I am doing this with a 55 404 currently.
Hi
Why not paint it white with black zebra stripes?
regards, Talita
2 days ago i was thinking about how you havent posted a video in 2 months hehehe
Well, i know it somtimes takes a while. but it hasn't been That long... has it? Haha :)
@@KJOff-Road it has actually, feels longer tho hahaha love watching it, i watch all videos with ad block off to help you out, its not much but its honest effort 🤷♀
13L Polar sea blue from 90’s Opel. It’s a bit out there for a Unimog but a really nice colour.
I would go for RAL8000 on this one. Just to have something different but somehow matching your other vehicles.
enjoy watching about the unimog's, am looking at buying one here in australia and not sure wich is the best to buy and restore,a 404, 416 or 421 what is your view?
Well. I think that very much depends what kind of driving you plan to do with it.
first off, they are all great, in their own way :)
Of these three, the 416 is the big boy. Big diesel engine. heavy frame and suspension. and overall the most beefy. but, also the the heaviest, and with the most tight cab.
The 421 is like a mini version of the 416/406
A smaller diesel, narrower axles. and overall smaller build. making it very light an nimble.
A little more room in the cab, bacause of the smaller engine (But not much) and the convertible also has a slightly narrower cab.
They are super fun, and easy to get around. But very slow! with a typical top speed of about 35mph.
And the 404 is about the size of the 416. but quite different in it's construction. but that also makes it much lighter, and nimble in the rough terrain.
Not as poweful though, with it's gasonline engine. and overall lighter build.
Hope the helps some :)
Thanks for watching along!
how about red or maybe dual color red+white.
Forest Service Green
Red or yellow 😊
Lambo orange would look good.
Color. Dodge Plum crazy purple.
Fendt grøn!
Nice work. How about Dove Blue from the old VW buses?
Who about White coouler
