- PUTIN'S WAR: "It's all about keeping the enemy at a distance!" Debate about AMRAAM for Ukraine
The SPD and FDP are demanding that Ukraine be supported in arming its newly delivered F-16 fighter jets. Andreas Schwarz, the SPD budget expert responsible for defense policy, suggested in Tuesday's "Rheinische Post" that the country be supplied with AMRAAM guided missiles, as these were to be phased out by the Bundeswehr anyway. Sidewinder and Iris-T missiles are also suitable.
In an interview with Welt, retired General Hans-Lothar Domröse commented on the possible delivery of AMRAAM air-to-air missiles by Germany to Ukraine. According to Domröse, these missiles could significantly strengthen Ukraine, as they are designed to keep the enemy at bay. He explains: "There is a nice American saying: Don't defend against arrows, hit the bow." This means that the missiles would enable Ukraine to hit strategic targets and not just fend off direct threats.
