Paragliding across a deadly desert!

- I wanted to test myself. To travel by paraglider over the harshest part of South Africa, solo, self-supported. To feel like a bird. To be free. But the desert is dry, and ancient … and it doesn’t care.

What I really like about you - you are an honest guy with honest video-telling :) thanks for your work!
But Christian, it's all made up by some guy in a dark room! It's the Other Greg that gets to fly, I just assemble his memories :-)
@@greghamerton4422 I hope he pays you well - this other Greg
@@greghamerton4422 Is your accent English or South African?
You make some of the coolest videos!
Greg Hamerton the Shakespeare of paragliding....what piece of art. Honestly I already felt a bit anxious thinking about sitting in the middle of this dessert without water.....
Great video! Unlike a lot of social media posts this one shows the real life adventure which doesn't always go according to plan A. Thanks!
You WIN! It is not the destination, it is the journey, and you had an epic adventure. Well done!
Nice reference to, "The gods must be crazy". 😁
So glad that wasn't lost on the viewers
Ya, i caught that too.
I just cannot imagine the total silence of the place - beautiful and rare. A wonderful insight into land I might never see. Thank you Greg.
Watching your videos convinces me that I NEED the calmness that paragliding has afforded you.
Greg, loving the clips since December 31st. You're absolutely rocking mate. The story telling, and the narration all were top notch! Brilliant 👌
totally awe-inspiring, I totally resent the fact I've left it soo late in my life to pursue my dreams, my god, there are people who teach, people who teach teachers and then there's Greg Hammerton, he overseas the lot of them, What a fantastic adventure, you know the place like the back of your hand and it still threw you a curveball, all part of the thrill and enjoyment of paragliding, Absolutely amazing, great video, great adventure, great narration, great flybubble video
I love these videos. To me, it is almost like a TOP Gear Christmas special. Keep them coming Greg.
I love it! It's great to see the poetic high-altitude free flight beginning clash against the reality of the desert. Thanks for taking us with you on that adventure, and sharing it even though you had to abort!
Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic adventure and wonderful images! We always have to respect nature and be prepared for the challenges of survival. Thanks for the great class.
You're welcome Bruno, and thanks for your support!
What an adventure, Greg. Thanks for sharing.
Wohoo that was wild one Greg! I felt all that desert heat trough my screen! :D Nice!
RUclips 4DX ... coming soon ;-)
@@greghamerton4422 Hahah! Very possible :D
Wow, thats great!Alone, unsupported, just free
[record scratch] until you f* it up. I plan wiser routes to find my freedom now, so I can support the illusion for longer :-)
You have an amazing amount of courage!
My thoughts exactly !!
that and the fact that finding that concrete bunker was a lucky find !! :)
Hi Mitch.
@@AnthonyVella Hi. Be like Greg. Dont be scared lol
@@MitchG I will try harder...
You will never forget the taste of that gulp of warm water, and I'm sure it tasted much better than of those icy stuff you've ever had. I envy you Greg.
I live to watch these epic adventures! ☆☆☆☆☆
Bravo!! Fantastic video on many levels! All of your videos are some of the best on RUclips!!
I have experienced what I considered to be solitude and desolation, but it doesn't even compare to what you have experienced there. I admire your determination and perseverance in trying to see a idea through. Your appetite for life is an inspiration to me to never give up on my own goals. Many thanks to you. Long may you continue to enjoy yourself.
As with all your videos, excellent. Thank you!
Maximum respect, Greg. You're right: we all feel the pull of the silent, ancient unknown. We find it as best we can, subject to our personal limitations. Most of us will never make your heights, but we will keep trying. Meanwhile, we watch and listen in awe. Be kind to yourself, Sir...
Thanks for that Greg! Take my hat off to you. Flying the Karoo takes a pair of big ones! Just driving through it is hot enough for me!!! Loved the stars, one of those things I miss the most... Safe flying bud, and thank you for all your valuable contribution to our sport.
Thanks Gerard! Nothing I love more than driving back through that area (after having flown across it :-)
Shocking and beautiful video. You managed to communicate the true spirit of the cross country flight. I congratulate you . Big hug from a hang glider pilot from Argentina
I think you're ready for a feature length movie Greg! That was awesome and I'm always ready to see more. Most inspiring and professionally done. Keep in shape for the X-Pyr! Can't wait to see your adventure there this year. (Top contender Greg now that Chrigel's out!!).
Awesome video. Thank you. I’ve picked the right guy to help me..... Jeff....
Thanks Jeff! Sorry I don't have more time to help you achieve your goals, but you're very well on track already. Looking forward to seeing your own volbiv adventure through the ALPS!
Being in the quiet of the desert was unnerving enough for me, not to mention the rest of what you were doing. Thank you for teaching and sharing.
Beautiful! And yes "Water is Life". I hope you enjoyed your first fresh beer once back to some shops!
Never felt the need to comment on a RUclips video before. Kardoesie to Prieska!? What a goal. The natural beauty of SA is scary and beautiful. Greg’s spirit equally so. Keep these videos coming. A Garden Route flight would be so cool!!!!
Such a kiff video Boet. I loved the mix of footage, adventure, philosophy and storytelling. And I do miss that African landscape. Thank you for sharing your adventure and for keeping it real.
Wow .very cool
Dude I was really wishing you a nice thermal at that last attempted climb, I was going, COME ON, COME ON! UGHHH. Thanks for bringing us along. cheers from the rocks in Canada
yeah I really needed something there, but it seems in such dry deserts the wind can be strong but the lift can be broken and unusable. I couldn't risk flying further into the unknown with the remains of my water.
Hey Jerry 👋 nice to see another Paramotor PIlot on Greg’s channel Greg really hits home with me I’ve learned lots watching and listening.
What an epic adventure, and what a great movie! Thanks for sharing!
These videos keep getting better and better.. the filming, editing, music, narrating.. simply beautiful!
Goosebumps...
It's an incredible adventure. I am very glad that I saw this video.
Veeery nice video, thanks Greg. You can literally feel the heat, the view of the stars and the mood you‘re in. An exciting adventure just watching it!
I would like to see you do this again. Its clearly one of the best videos i've seen that embraces pure adventure.. More water and a personal locator beacon on hand. I am no desert survivalist but when you landed and felt the heat wave on the ground i recalled reading a military survival guide once that stated that sleeping in the shade 4 feet above the ground was much much cooler. The glider could make shade and the harnes could be the hammock but getting above the ground is a head scratcher. Also trail hikers in the American Southwest favor small collapsable umbrellas to hike with. They weigh ounces. Anyhow very inspiring. Hope this thread continues with more great discussion.
Absolutely stunning adventurre! Thanks for sharing, glad you're ok. And one more thing - fantastic storytelling. Cheers Greg!
Great images, inspiring story, good music, nice poetry.
Powerful! Gripping! Amazing adventure!
Another great video Greg.
Great video! Well done, sir!
beautiful ! thanks for sharing
Great Video Greg! Just watching it made me so thirsty! Thank you for sharing!
This is an amazing story. I am just getting into paragliding and to see this video is just inspiring. Thank you so much
a cool dude for a great adventure ! thank you for sharing your experience !
Wow, your videos are so captivating and engaging. I also love how you're so humble and not afraid to show us any mistakes you may have made. And I'll be honest, I know nothing about paragliding. I only clicked because it was in my recommended after watching some folks who didn't do too well (i.e. fails). I'm hooked. Thanks man!
Great video. Very well written too
Thanks Jald, I make it up as I go along, but I've had a little practice :-) www.amazon.co.uk/Riddlers-Gift-First-Tale-Lifesong-ebook/dp/B003AILORM/
This deserves way more likes, loved it!
Amazing and most inspiring video. I really tapped into the spirit of the adventure
Absolutely incredible film Greg. Awesome content and so well put together. Top marks!!
This made me cry :) thx for sharing
Wow. Some flight, Greg. Since you've done the video editing, I trust you're still alive. To an unknown extent. Out into the wild is no joke, Greg. I speak from experience, one that I expected you to have as well.
What an epic, outstanding and scary adventure. You, sir, are legend and your storytelling skills outstanding! Fantastic job. You make me dream for adventures like that. I don't know if I will ever achieve such flying skills but if I ever do, thank you for the inspiration and important lessons.
This video is very strong message. inspiring and motivating. Cheers Greg!
Amazing challenge of self! ...Love your heart man!!!
Great vid. I've been through there on my bike. Loved the bit of metal after all the chilled music
Very very nice film Greg! I think Barry Pedersen told me about your flight when I was down mid-January, and he warned me not to fly NE past Clanwilliam :-) Thanks for sharing!
Immense Greg. Awesome ambition, it was going to be epic - whichever way it went..
Well done ....You will be back !!!
Beautifully told and excellent production - nice one Greg!
Wow Greg certainly an adventure. It’s like our daily flying life here in Australia. The heat just sucks the life out of you for sure.
Wow, that's really intimidating. I would ask myself a second time if I wanted to fly there I admit. Like you said yourself: the Alps are much more friendly as it comes to finding reserves. A nice video, Greg!
Wow, an amazing adventure! Thanks for sharing. :)
Nice one Greg.
Hi Greg, thanks a lot for sharing your amazing lifetime. Hope you are well up! Would like to fly some day a few miles with you:) Take care, Markus
Beautifull film again Greg! Cheers!! 🍺🍺
Greg, dude - the scale of it all is epic!!😮 Proves again, that we as humans, comparing to such vastness, we're small as cosmic grain of sand. Thank you for sharing=caring! Also you "grew" exponentially lately in YT "game", that's really, really pleasant to see 👏👏🤙. Much obliged!!🙌
Thanks HP, its thanks to pilots joining our Patreon page that I've had time to up the production level! Really satisfying for me to be able to share these stories
Incredible video brother. I know the feeling. Thank you.
Wow, what an adventure! What great video, what a cool story telling. Respect you must be brave to go there on a bivi trip.
Thanks for taking us along!
Happy landings
More videos like this please Greg. I am loving the Cape mountain scenes which are majestic. Living in Sussex now and struggling with one of the wettest winters I can only dream of flying the mountains that used to be on my doorstep.
Superb adventure! But daring...
NICE ADVENTURE. Should you know the xc in Brazil.
Such big inspiration!!! I'm a new pilot and your videos are full of good tips and advice tha help us newbie to fly better and safer. thanks a lot!
10/10 for a truly amazing heroic effort to challenge yourself in that unforgiving terrain.
There are no mistakes, only lessons...
A heartfelt watch, so glad you got out alive :-)
WELL DONE GREG!! - you the man - Keep the passion burning, cameras rolling, recording this epic sport ;-)
Nice! Really epic. Good job!👍💪💪. Great to fly the home turf eh? The terrain is like a drier, more desolate version of the SW USA. I felt for your tangle with the bushes... we deal with that pretty much on every flight. I fully understood the heatstroke and over reaching from personal experience in the 90s solo hiking in the Grand Canyon in the summer. Water becomes the most important thing in the universe. Desperately seeking shade. Fear that you won't make it to the next water cache. Dreaming of ice and cold pop...
Sorry about your ankle. I just bought my 3rd pair of Hanwag Sky GTX; they destruct after about 1.7 years in the harsh rocky mountains here. This pair was purchased from Flybubble! Hanwag USA discontinued them, grrr. I bet your ankle would have been ok if you had been wearing yours...😜
Yup, totally agree, Hanwags would have kept me together better than trail running shoes. But they aren't great to walk in for miles in the heat.
What a beautiful video and epic adventure! Besides the journey, which is Simply incredible, I truly value and appreciate your honesty throughout all your experiences! Despite being highly experienced and all, you are not afraid to expose your mistakes, bad judgement calls and self-criticisms! Which makes the story and whole experience more real and relatable! Wish you many more adventures and I look forward to watching anything you post! Safe flying mate!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your adventures
Your video was very very inspiring. I loved it and that is exactly how I plan on doing it. Once I buy a paraglider and learn how to fly it 😀
Hi Greg! Watched your video last night and was thinking about it all day. I am solo pilot and have been pioneering a lot of sites where I live and besides your videos being great, informative and inspiring I just wanting to thank you for keeping it real. I was doing hike in flys in central america lately and the heat was brutal. Hydration planning is key thanks for reflecting that in your video. Hope to meet you some day either in SA or UK. Keep up the great work you are more inspirational then you know but don't get beat up for us invisible RUclips audience ;)
PS got to support you on Patreon now :)
Thanks Keith, that trip made me really love every glass of water I have drunk ever since. We are so lucky to live in abundant societies, in modern times.
The Greg Hamertons must be crazy. ;)
Well done, mate - those conditions are brutal; loved this vicarious tour of a flight I’ll never myself do!
What an awesome video, slightly different to some of your others but should appeal to a broader audience. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
What an awesome video!
Well done Greg your a legend👏🏾👏🏾
wow i am speechless this is amazing and so so inspiring
Cool star shots that must have been amazing
I think this is quite a valid task flying out deep into the middle of nowhere to see the whole sky light up with stars. Also I think it might be more fun with friends although solitary meditation can be great medicine. Your skill and confidence to fly so far from support
Epic job!
Wow. Amazing story. Well done
Beautiful place and an amazing adventure. Love the way you train for the X-Pyr, there will be be really hot days in the Pyrenees and this experience will come in handy. Go Greg!
Awesome video, man! Subscribed!
VAS BYT Boet and thanks and respect from Ivybridge in Devon. Cheers Paul
ja, vasbyt. Being out there made me really respect the Voertrekkers. Going through there with your whole family and an oxcart. OMG.
you are my hero !
Amazing experience, thanks for sharing
Beautiful! Love it 😊
I bought the video of the Gods must be Crazy just because of your "coke bottle" reference. Laughed my head off again.
Great video, thank you Greg !
Respect. A Unique adventure with great story telling , transparency and amazing views.
Nice adventure 👍 live for the journey
Amazing effort - it takes a lot of courage to set off into the unknown like that, even though you had food/water for 4 days (you thought!) I was worried in a sailplane over Prieska at 16,000’ and there you are going in that direction under a tiny bit of fabric expecting to land out. Respect!
Great decision to press the exit button rather than press on flying, though. Conditions looked as extreme as anywhere...
