- Ready to hear the difference between Spruce and Mahogany guitars? Same builder, similar models, but different tonewoods - which one would you choose?
I'm beyond excited for today's Acoustic Tuesday episode. We have a special treat as we dive into the world of Thompson Guitars, handcrafted in Sisters, Oregon. This time, we'll be comparing two absolutely incredible guitars from their lineup: the Thompson DC-MA and the Thompson MAD-ADI. Grab your pick, sit back, and get ready for a tonal adventure!
The first guitar I'll be showcasing is the Thompson DCMA. This mahogany dreadnought beauty boasts deep and dark tones that will make your ears swoon. I'll be sharing my thoughts on the build quality, playability, and how that mahogany goodness provides a rich and resonant sound that'll leave you craving more.
Next up is the Thompson MAD-ADI, crafted from Adirondack spruce. This guitar is the perfect contrast to the DC-MA, offering a much brighter and lighter tone. I'll delve into what makes the Adirondack spruce so special, and how its unique properties contribute to the guitar's overall sound and projection.
Throughout the episode, I'll be playing both of these incredible instruments side by side, so you can hear the distinct differences in their tonal qualities. I'm excited to share my insights and help you decide which one might be the right fit for your playing style and taste.
We'll also cover two fundraisers that are very near and dear to me. Please consider donating to make sure these musicians' lives are honored properly.
The first documentary is called ORACLE: The Life & Music of Michael Hedges. You can donate by clicking the link below:

What an amazing, absolutely incredible episode, Tony. As you began to play Mad Addie, I immediately "heard" Paul Simon's "Sounds of Silence". And then you described this guitar as one for slow and "sensitive" songs! YES!!! Which, of course is exactly what "Sounds of Silence" is. Such a delight to listen to you play both so beautifully and I "hear" Tony Rice and Clarence White when you get picking on the DCMA. Such a treat to hear you play them. Thank you. Thank you.
Just love your playing on this episode. Nice long cuts. Shows off both guitars beautifully.
I’m a new TAC member and love your teaching style. I’ve been dabbling for 50+ years (my wife says 5 years over and over again). It’s time to develop the basics and need discipline to do that. Your program serves that to me on a silver platter. Thank you!
I am the exact same way! If it makes you feel any better, I've been a TAC member from the beginning - and like your wife says, I'm still playing 5 years now over and over again! I need to go back to the very basics, and do it right this time, not just jumping ahead when I really didn't put in enough time on those basics or use enough discipline and patience to play the things that aren't really fun - but we need to master anyway. That's been my issue. I wish you luck - maybe in a year we can both say we're happy w/ our progress! I would love to NOT be a great sloppy player!
@MadameM. Holy Toledo -- you both sound like me as well! Took up guitar 55 years ago at the age of eight, and have been trudging the same ground over and over. Despite arthritis and carpal tunnel surgery in still going at it. Let us all move forward, past our self imposed limitations!
These episodes are great. And every time I watch one and see Tony with a guitar - I start to play again.
I'd love to be the proud owner of the Mahogany example! What a kicker! Wow! Fab tones and sustain!
My fave is the MAD ADI, just so so beautiful. I have a wonderful Sigma D 18 alike dreadnought that is a one of a kind instrument... it's simply amazing and was really inexpensive... that's maybe why I chose the MAD ADI 😁 Tony, keep inspiring all of us guitar geeks!
Nice! I have six Sigma guitars, they make some really nice sounding and affordable guitars.
Thompson with rosewood for me. 🙌 They both are stellar!
Oh, and I have to say (as per below) I have both the Martin D28 Authentic 1937 and the D18 Authentic 1937, I'm lucky to have both. I have to say that my opinion seems to be oposite of below. When I'm playing with the bluegrass band and on a larger stage my go to is the D28, for it's extra punch. When I'm playing solo I just love the D18 (2012 build), it's warmth and balance are just magical.
I vote for MAD-ADI as well, both are great sounding, and yes I see the beauty of the mahogany in Bluegrass picking. Lovely guitars, I notice your guitars every guitar lesson, what a nice collection. One question I have is about your Emerald jumbo, I see a corner of it on your lessons often but never see you play it. I’m a big Emerald fan, I’d like to hear your story on that one.
I have the Cuban mahogany Thompson. I am in the queue for a MAD ADI. And cannot decide if I want to upgrade to Brazilian but I think after watching this. I have made up my mind, so thank you very much.. I have a question Tony. Is your cuban mahogany a 2016 by chance ?
Hi Tony, I'm Tim. New to you channel and loving it so far. Id like to give you alittle of my guitar journey sometime but for now i have a question. I here allot about learning music theory and how important it is. What's your take on it? I mean if i don't plan on writing or teaching is it really gonna help with my playing ? Im not so sure. Thanks, have a great day.
Usually I am onstage alone, so definitely the Rosewood…. Really a full sound with lots of “extras” that fill in around a voice…
I really enjoyed the sound of the madaddi.
I was a diehard mahogany fan for years. That is until I bought a Gibson Songwriter. I love how open it sounds. Now my J45 sounds like I've draped a sweater over it. BTW that MAD ADI is a beauty.
@yumpladukfoo I've heard great things about the J29. Nice!
What dreadnought I would favor: the NAD ADi because of the singing I do. However, I also like the mahogany back guitar for other tunes.
Happy Birthday, TAC! (3/29)
Ohhhh, those Thompson's! To steal song lyrics.. "sweet dreams are made of these"! :D As to which is sweetest to MY ears? "That depends" is my answer! :D For the very reasons you stated, EACH has their unique applications where they truly SHINE, while both is certainly "more than adequate" for anything! :D
I would give anything to have a thompson i have a 2018 d-18 and thats all i will ever have people like me are not near as fortunate i work 7 days a week can barely pay bills so thompsons and pre war martins stuff like that is literal just a dream, but love seeing u play them
You own the best guitar ever invented. So you have that going for you.
Its the Rosewood for me it sound brighter and has more sustain, just my opinion , great looking guitars both. all the very best to you Tony and the rest of the TAC familiy.
Tony, have you tried a Martin Super D Koa back? How does that compare to these Preston Thompson Dreadnoughts?
What do you think of the Peavey Guitars especially I own a Peavey Composer Parlor Guitar and it sounds real nice to me?
I have been following you since your days back Music Villa.
Have a wonderful Guitar Time. Clyde Ortego
It would be fun to hear you compare the Thompson Rosewood with your Martin D-35.
PS, Because I own and love my Martin D-35, I will vote for the Thompson with Rosewood.
My husband and I were aboard Cayamo cruise with Tommy Emmanuel! He is amazing to watch live! Not only that, he is extremely personable. It seemed like he always had a guitar and would jam with guests on the ship. One time, we were leaving the buffet area and he jammed with one of the workers who says "washy washy" to the guests as they enter the buffet area to put hand sanitizer. They burst into an ad libbed song of "I Want to Wash Your Hands" to the tune of The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand." I continued to see the worker afterwards and when I would see him we'd sing a bit of the "I Want to Wash Your Hands" together and he would smile ear to ear. He truly made that worker's week and made a wonderful impression on me.
Love the Mad Adi!
The 'Mad Addi' is truly amazing..even through crappy tv speakers
Day 61 of TAC.
I've kind of hit a wall but I'm pushing along until I find the corner. The problems are the same ones, chord transitions mainly. I'm still very slow and muddled, if that's a way to describe it. My fingers just don't seem to be finding the strings with accuracy. I'll give it 10k more tries and see where I am with it then.
My win for the week is the open G major scale. I'm getting faster and clean on the up and seeing improvement on the down. I like the scales, they're fun.
That's the bottom line, I'm still having fun! I can't seem to not pick up the guitar any time I sit down for a minute. I have my routine that I stick to but I find myself practicing every chance I get. When I get stuck or frustrated I just go back to a previous lesson or jump into a new one. At this point there's no shortage of new roads to travel so everyday is an adventure.
Might build a robotic exo-hand so I can play the F.
Love the lushness of the Mad- Adi but I am a push over for the mahogany. It won me over. Isn't Let It Be by Mcartney? As while we are on the unknown state called South Carolina, W.C. Huntley hails from Florence,SC. Our loss is your gain. Still love his music!! But, I would introduce you to Brodie Porterfield form the Columbia, SC area. A wonderful singer/songwriter/guitarist extraordinaire! Check out his debut cd. and has several videos on youtube. He is amazing! He now has a duo with his wife Kelley called the Waterkickers and are wonderful!! They have several videos on youtube and are about come out with an album. Nonetheless, a WONDERFUL show!! Thank you so much!!
Other ideas: Tony, do you use any nylon string guitars?? Like Muriel Anderson?
My vote is for the Mad Adi. I love the sound but that may be because I own an HD-28. I also appreciate the sound mahogany produces but for different purposes. I use an Adi / Mahogany CEO-7 primarily for finger picking (but it also holds up for strumming). Two completely different sounds that defy comparison. They each have their special role to play.
Yes South Carolina is a state, mac and cheese is a vegetable there. I hope to visit there again soon.
i vote madagascar rosewood (MAD-ADI). it's voice is breathtaking.
It's okay Tony, the people in South Carolina probably think that you are in Canada anyway. My wife and I visited this beautiful state last summer and spent a week in Hilton Head. One day she drove me to North Carolina (I'm legally blind) and I bought my CEO 7 from Casino Guitars. Great people and a very fine guitar! This is my second Adirondack over mahogany guitar I have, along with a D-18GE. So I would choose the Mad Adi if you are offering me to choose one for me. Both are amazing.
I like the Cuban mahogany for its clean dry single notes.
Even listening on a cheap tablet, I can hear the different tonal qualities of both guitars.
Great epizode . I consider myself n intermidiate player, not a prof. So my modest komment is .i will chose both. And i know i didnˇ"t answer cause i have two ibanez acoustic one solid top and bottom and sides and the other ad spruce ,ross wood, and i can" play ony one . depends od the mod am that day and the songs i play or try something to put on paper.
How can I watch the Honeyboy video. Not available on Prime.
FWIW, I favor the Madagascar Rosewood. Both are phenomenal guitars, but, OMG, it's the Mad Addie for me.
Is that a Shubb capo, or something else that looks like a Shubb?
Hi.I am not a native English speaker, and was wondering: does "dreadnaught" mean fearless? Wonder how it got its name.
I recently got an Eastman adi-rosewood D28 copy and can`t put it down.
Yes it does mean that! It was named after a British battleship of the same name due to its large size and strong build. When introduced, the dreadnought guitar size was the largest and loudest available.
I liked both of your guitars but if I were to purchase only one of them I would go for the 2nd one. Mad something or other. I am in the market but not sure how much I can spend on a guitar.
The Cuban mahogany for me!
Cuban Mahogany hasn't been commercially available since exporting it was banned in 1946! Is this reclaimed Cuban mahogany or cut and stockpiled before the ban? I ask purely out of interest as I thought Honduran Mahogany was the only remaining genuine mahogany available (and even that is getting rare). Sorry if I missed this detail.
It's a little like apples to oranges thing...2 guitars designed for a different but specific sound. There's a reason you own both. Had you played the mahogony one last, it may have faired better. My preferred sound as a rhythm player is mad adi. This mad adi is much like Martin custom shop mad adi 42 style.
Tony. How's about great guitars by builders that do not ask $4-5k each? I know they gotta be out there. And, these guys are usually passionate beyond belief. Thx. Bob
My selection is MR-AD combination....
MR is the most close to Braz R wood....
Everything is a matter of taste... and of playing style ...
My vote goes to the MAD ADI. What if you went to Thompson guitar with the MAD ADI and then grabbed the DC-MA of the wall. Would still go "wow!" and buy it? I hope the answer is Yes! More guitars is always better
FYI, on board ship, the roof is an "overhead". Go Navy.
I have the Martin D28 Authentic 1937 and I think it should be said that if you're looking at D28s then the Madagascar Rosewood beats ANY East Indian Rosewood guitar hands down. It's big and powerful and not at all boomy.
Mad Addie "singer/songwriter " instrument, yes, absolutely!!!
I feel like I am going through an existential crisis, but I'd have to go with the MAD-ADI!
Mad addie rings like a bell!
Bro, is your Southern Jumbo rosewood? Can't believe this is your first hog dread.
Rosewood 😊
That Cuban mahogany is the winner
Since I own a pile of rosewood guitars I covet the mahogany.
I prefer the sound of the Rosewood. Mad Adi.
Mad Adi gets my vote.
So this is more of a Rosewood vs Mahogany comparison rather than a Adi spruce vs Mahogany comparison
so think of the song let be guitar lick idea also sounded like the song my girl.
did y'all mean to title this video/episode "Rosewood vs. Mahogany", instead of "Adi spruce vs. Mahogany"?
Rosewood
Asked a question, never got a response.
Mad Adi
Both are nice, but the Mad Adi has a prettier sound.
