Big Peat review

  • It feels like the Remarkable Regional Malts series from Douglas Laing has been around forever. The truth is...it started with this very blend (Big Peat) in 2009. Hardly that long ago in the scheme of things but...given that most of us are still relatively new to the whisky world...Big Peat could be considered a bit of an "old hand".
    But is it any good??
    Enjoy.

I have never had a full bottle of Big Peat or Rock Oyster. Sounds like I should hunt down the later. Thanks for sharing!

Nice one! Yeah most of the RRM s are just ok. I think the idea is really good, to showcase every region's character but I think these malts are better experienced in the beginning of one's whisky journey, rather than later on with much more experience. Having said that I've just shot 6 videos of the whole range and gave my pick of the region as well, so let's see how well they're received. Cheers 🥃

I disagree with the smokey finish being short, the smoke lingers for ages for me. Love it

Haven't tried the Big Peat, but have to agree with you that Rock Island is the favorite of the few that I have opened. It fared pretty well during a blind tasting of 4 island whiskies with my small group, coming in 2nd overall. I'm using an Epicurean in this month's Lowland tasting and my perspective so far is that it's 'just okay'. (Would rather have a Lochlea, Sowing Edition or a Bladnoch.) Thanks for the review Jim.

Thanks for the honest review, Jim. I picked up a Christmas Edition of Big Peat maybe four or five years ago, and the bottle is still two thirds full. It's a well made blended malt, of course, and ticks all the right boxes in regard to natural presentation, but I just don't find myself reaching for it when I'm in a peaty mood. I think you're quite right in recommending indie bottlings of Caol Ila as a substitute, or simply having a go with the Islay standards such as Ardbeg 10 or Port Charlotte 10. Cheers.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one, Jim.
Have had several expressions and yep, no surprise I do like them. However, I still prefer several expressions from individual distilleries, both OB as IB. Exactly as you pointed out: nothing really jumps out here... and that for me is the case with (almost) all blends... and not only the DL series.
Outstanding 'if you try this..' suggestion!

Well if you're gonna call yourself peathead...you're almost contractually obliged to like Big Peat 😂😂

@@WhiskeyNovice Of the Regional Malts I indeed prefer this one the most.... But like you, I prefer the parts over the sum of the parts.

      @peathead4450 Год назад +3

@@TimHoekstra Not exactly sure. Must be one I tried (I guess) 4 or 5 years ago... but that can easily be due to the stage in my whisky journey or so. So please do not rely on any ratings from me (in fact: never do rely on me what that matter 😀)

Have a feis ile bottling from a few years ago in the cabinet, along with a rock oyster 18 which i have high hopes for! Any thoughts on the rumours of Diageo stopping selling Caol Ila to IBs? Thanks for the review

I will tend to agree with you on that, Jim, and yeah long time I haven't tried Big Peat (got a mini bottle of it, still unopened) which was launched in 2009 & I was told already by a rep that it had indeed very little of Port Ellen, and also (i have to say, as a big fan of Port Ellen & having put quite often some of my bottles in my home blends, that it can show even at a low percentage-(less than 5 % for several batches, maybe a bit more for the first batches) the casks they put it are older stock than they had 20 years ago, and Port Ellen style did change a lot over the years (not to mention if they are tired casks for some I don't know but could be) and based on the 30 yo + versions I've tried it get closer to Lagavulin than before so hard to differentiate from the other single malts...I also agree about the other R.R.M. of the range (my "Rock Oyster" bottle from 2018 is the best RRM I tried so far), though still need to try some limited releases of each reference...There are other options blended malt wise, regarding islay, and for me some of the most interesting are the Elements of Islay ones, but I need to try the 3 new revamped versions to say more (got an older one called "Peat & Sherry" that is nice). Nice & frank review (if I may say, play of words intented here !) as we like it...😉 PS: I enjoy my Big Peat Christmas Edition 2017 but it seems not to be the masterpiece I thought initially it was in the heat of the show in which I first tasted it, it is rather good though, but not much more...

I generally like Big Peat, but at a certain price; if you can't find it for under $40, and I don't think you can any longer, it's a solid pass for me.
To be honest, a $35 Scarabus is very good, maybe better, Peated Mystery Malt if you can find it; ditto for Ardbeg 5 for under $45. Ardbeg 5 is remains an insane value! ✌️

Hi Jim, did have a big peat a few years ago and if I remember correctly I quit liked it but has you said the earlier rock oyster was good. Haven’t had the rock island though. Thanks for your honest opinions Jim, slàinte.

Thanks for this review buddy. While this one aims for the sweet spot and apparently is a bit off target, at least it is in the neighborhood of the peat spot 😉. With so many whiskies on my radar, I always appreciate it when I can eliminate one from consideration. Cheers!

Enjoy the DL Remarkable Regional Malts, apart from the Epicurean (just not our bag!)! BigPeat good value easy drinker, like the rest of the range gets better with the age statement versions. Slainthe Jim!

Interestingly, for me, Big Peat is the last one that comes to my mind when talking about the remarkable regionals.
Personally, I love the Timorous Beastie - and the special editions of the Scallywag (not so much the standart there). And yes, I agree: the rock island is fabulous!
On the Big Peat taste, I can follow you - although I might be not quite as thrown off as you.

I came across a 26 year CS Big Peat for half price. Glad I left it behind. $100 is still a lot for a mediocre experience. Crazy to think the info on the label would be worth $200 for the age, ABV and blah blah blah

as much as I like DL and some of their regional malts, this one never did much for me. Think there's something in the balance of it that doenst really work for me. It's generally not at all bad but not really particulalrly exciting, and for the price tag there's plenty of alternatives I'd prefer over Big Peat. QSome of their limited relases have been brilliant, but the standad expression just isn't really my dram. Cheers Jim
