Týr Battle Ballads Album Review | BangerTV

- The follow-up to the band’s 2019’s powerful progressive folk-metal album Hel, the new Battle Ballads is aptly named - a crushing, soaring, batch of classical embellished songs that conjure images of galloping steeds, clashing swords, and hard-fought victories. And, as if it needs to be stated, the title Battle Ballads has nothing in common with the lighter-raising songs so prevalent in the 1980s.

Let's encourage more reviews outside of Blayne's normal zone. That way we might get something interesting, unpredictable and enjoyable.
Like what, coward? You seem like fun...
I agree
@@CraigMader What a weird response.
I like Battle Ballads a lot. Tyr's signature ryming and interesting lyrics are still there. No filler songs like Hel had. Sarah should have reviewed this one.
I don't understand why people use 1 to 5 rating system like this. Blayne said it was a "bad record" but gave it 2,5 out of 5 which by definition means average
I saw them in Detroit last week and picked up a signed copy.
Having had this album for over a month now, I couldn't disagree more with this review. It's a fun Tyr album that has so many songs that'll be great to experience live.
No. Compared to their earlier output this is oversimplified garbage. While they leaned towards Dream Theater and other on Ragnarok this is more in the veins of modern Amon Amarth or Powerwolf. Easily consumable power metal for the festival crowds…
@@Schubladengedanke so you just agreed with me. Song meant for live shows. There's nothing wrong with that. Tyr has always had power metal somewhere in its sound on every album. Having it more on this album is far from a bad thing.
@@HeavyDebriefings yes and no 😂
Iam happy for you that you feel like that. Iam not a big festival guy, so I really like albums that I can listen to at home in my dark basement. Alone. 😂 this is not the album for the occasion.
@@Schubladengedanke I don't go to festivals either.
And hell, I've been Listening to Sentenced and Woods of Ypres all day, dealing with mental health issues on top of that. That doesn't mean a band can't put out a fun album once in a while.
2024 sucks enough as it is, having an album meant to make people happy in a metal setting shouldn't be something to be shat upon.
@@HeavyDebriefings as I said. If the albums makes you feel good and you like it - I won’t forbid you listening to it :-)
It's 3am. Let your poor intern go to bed.
Cool. Another recent folkmetal nugget to try is SULDUSK-Anthesis. Its blakfolk with astounding female vocals. Give it a shot. Love you people.
Hey Blayne, I was also at that Tyr show at Sneaky Dee's! One of my favourite concert memories is when Tyr came back out for an encore, and Heri introduced the song Whiskey in the Jar saying, "This one goes out to James Hetfield and his friends!" - then somebody from the crowd yelled back "James Hetfield doesn't HAVE any friends!!" Haha now I'm wondering if that was you
If you stopped listening to Tyr at Northern Star, then I highly recommend you go jam the album that came after it “Valkrja” - easily one of their best IMO
Great a dude who only likes two styles of metal and bands from Canada reviewing another album we all know he won't like. Wonderful.
I've never really gotten into these guys, but they have amazing artwork on most of their stuff. Thanks for the video, Blayne!
"First dance at your Viking themed wedding" metal 🤣🤣🤣
As an icelander i can translate the name it says welcome faro-islander
Imo the title and cover of the album let you know it's a record to sing, play along and have fun. The rock opera is Valkyrja, the Týr going ultra complex is Hel. This one has orchestration, so there's that hahahah I just love Týr hahahah
Wonder if you might review the Lord Spikeheart album?
I've kept up with TYR and I love the song Hammered. I have read they are purposely trying to simplify things for this record so I guess we will see if that works out for them or not. For long time fans, it probably won't but if they get a bunch of new people on board..... who knows?
My friend bought me a Tyr shirt from 2000 Kms away the other day :)
I totally thought we were gonna slam through the upstairs of Sneak's that night and land directly on somebody's King's Crown.
As a faroese metalhead, i think Týr is boring😂
Totally agree
Well I did wonder about it. This band. There’s a Black Sabbath album named “TYR.” And I like them in that weird black/death metal documentary.
Yeah... when I tried out this album the other day the verses killed it for me, but overall the songs were not good.
Thanks, Blayne.
Blayne, if you see this-I am confused by your ratings. I saw a prior review you did where you said that 3 skulls was a good review. And in this review, you gave it 2 and a half and hated it. It seems like there is a lot happening within that 1/2 of a star between reviews.
I mean I guess it doesn't matter a whole lot because the words you choose say it all, but I'd be curious to know the guidelines you choose when creating your skull rating.
Signed,
A guy who takes this way too seriously.
Great review! Sound is out of sync though. Wake your intern and make them go back to the office.
Every speaker of any germanic tongue should have gotten that.
I‘m german and got it right away.
4:32 just like us youtube commenters
Has NO ONE heard "Weston Super Maim" !??!?
Pig destroyer and Meshuggah influenced grindcore/doom/Post Metal
Týr are one of my all-time favourite bands and admittedly - this album is disappointing.
I share the frustrations that it's a bit too "basic". I think they intentionally went for a direct and streamlined album - it's their shortest album ever at only 41 minutes - "By the Light of the Northern Star" was their shortest prior to this and that one was a deliberate "streamlining" of their sound too but more of a success in the songwriting department, I feel.
Why are Týr one of my all-time favourite bands? well I love their sound but most of all I love their "atypical" melodic sense. They borrow from Nordic folk-songs, especially Faroese ones - and they have a peculiar melodic flow that sounds epic and refreshing.
Their main flaw is when they go too "basic" and "stock". That's what drags this album down a bit - even if it's been bolstered by the addition of the Symphonic elements.
Overall though, despite being a disappointment - I still find a LOT to really enjoy about the album, and maybe it will grow on me over time.
"Torkils Døtur" seems to be a fan favourite, actually! contrary to Blayne's opinion of it. It's one of my favourites too - I don't think it's boring at all.
It's a shame because the songs on 'By the Light of the Northern Star' are SO catchy and memorable, yet most of the songs on the albums that followed sound so uninteresting and forgettable to me.
Good album, poor review.
I mean what were we actually expecting?
This millennial is obviously not a fan of T'yr , his review is pointless an meaningless because millennials don't know what metal is. Metal was cool back in the 80s and early 90s before it was mixed with a bunch of Bullshit. Torkils dotur is bad ass, great song writing , goes from the slowest song to the most jamming song ever , amazing . "Vælkomnir Føroyingar is a great song, my favorite off the album not a viking graduation but an amazing vocal harmony. Tyr delivers greatly!
Looks like a basic album, for a basic review. I wonder if Sarah would have reviewed it differently.
Got it last night ...it's ehhh but not as wth happened ...is liked you knew it but didn't say it out loud...like the shock you get after hearing sex noises from your parents room...then you turn up the volume on your headphones pretending it didn't happened .
Pretty honest review....now be honest when you review 1) those new school bands who wear leather and play boring, cliche, old school heavy metal or 2) crusty old school death metal bands with childish names who recorded in a garage and all I hear is fuzz. That's all this channel pushes.
Don’t forget agonizingly slow doom bands that play one note a minute.
@@phil_k_96 ahhhh yes, how could I forget them
I've seen these comments many times on this channel. Genuinely curious, what do you want them to review? You already discredit yourself when you say "bands that no-one has ever heard of" because it almost sounds like you just want them to review popular music that already has a lot of media attention.
@@fullmetalguy8357 fixed it. I thought that was a flaw with my statement when I first posted but didn't fix it.
@@hugostiglitz5798 I tend to like a lot of the bands that get reviewed here because a lot of the stuff that gets pushed by other publications and channels are either focused purely on big legacy / old-school acts or are focused on metalcore / deathcore and alternative "metal" bands. At least here they give some attention to some really good bands that don't fall into those categories. So I'm guessing you're just not a fan of either of those styles.
I am very disappointed that they don't do many Songs in the Faroese language anymore.
Everything since "Hel" sounds generic and too polished IMO.
lol 😂
*_I mean, I always "thumbsup", but this music sucks. So what do I do?_*
*_This music is the next-door neighbour of Eurovision Song Contest "Heavy Metal"._*
*_The thumbsup is for you Blayne, not this crap._*
3.5/5
F… Blane it’s horrible!
Dumbest review for this album. It’s pretty much you didn’t want to review it & you just wanted By the Light of the Northern Star Pt2. If you wanted that, go back to the last 3 albums you missed 😂
This album is a 3 at best.disappointed.
I dont like the fact that they kill whales but okay
American big business were so much more reliant on whaling than the Faroes are, so honestly lesser evil for me.
@@grievuspwn4g3 I dont know in general Im not a fan of killing animals whatsoever, also Im not from the US so to me both is evil
I don't imagine the band themselves kill whales!
😂
Humans be humaning lol😂❤
Boring and basic pretty much sums up Tyr's career. Saw them in a couple of shows opening for other bands and they've always left me completely unimpressed. Vocals are monotonous, music is uninspired, not sure what some people like in them.
