  • We paid our very 1st visit to Holy Island - mainly to see the causeway. Over 2 days in August 2022 we watched with amazement as the tide came in. This year - 2023 - we paid another visit. This video is the result of both those visits.

Hi Steve, We're in your video! On 25th Aug 23 (the day after your last footage), there was a seal on the mud flats next to the refuge box!.. Great video! Cheers!

Oh Wow! Thank you for letting us know :) Glad you enjoyed the video - it was worth doing because it is a great part of the Country and the causeway is something to experience :)

Absolutely love the down to Earth take on this Thank you If I may add people's stupidity beggars belief In the recent flooding in our area the amount of cars stranded and most likely written off was unbelievable

    Fantastic video.
Must be hell with a King spring tide..
New Zealand here, we don't have any crossing like that.
The road seems to be in very good condition, considering its flooding so often.
    Cheers and thanks..
    NEW ZEALAND.

Thank you :) Yes the road is in very good condition. The times we went it was late summer so the tides were pretty tame. I would like to see what it looked like on a big spring tide with a north east gale behind it!. The main rough tide action - big waves ect - are further out behind the island so that is where the real erosion will be happening. This part is basically a flood plain. The tide tends to build up behind the sandbanks at the low tide mark. It then spills over getting faster and faster as the tide rises. This is why it then suddenly come in really fast in that last hour.

We are heading there in just over a weeks time, have already done my homework with the tides, told the wife that she will need to get up early that morning to get there to make most of the day.

Re tides - we arrived as the tide was rising and many visitors leaving, stayed a few hours with less people around, then left after the tide dropped. Road closed during high tide.
Google Lindisfarne Monastery, it is here.

Nearly every week we were hearing of idiots who had to be rescued. Some even had children with them!! It's about time they were charged to be brought back, even though they have probably had their car written off. Salt water is unforgiving.

The woman paddling in the water was driving a landrover. She could drive in water 400mm deep.

If you take the time to watch the video properly you will see that I said she is stood in water that is already 400mm deep - just a few yards further the depth is greater. The level increases to 600 - 700mm in just a few yards - that plus the tide is rising very fast - means her car will not be able to go any further and it will start to float away. When all said and done the safe crossing times are there to prevent this sort of stupidity.
