Its an EFHW - 132 feet gives you resonance on 80 as a half wave and harmonics to allow 40 20 15 10. The compensation coil (not choke) allows you to also get a decent match on 12 and 17m. Not a bad antenna - although in the US MYANTENNAS are better built and in Europe HYENDFED are better constructed. These also offer far higher power to be used. 73
Thank you for the video. I am in the process of setting up my HF shack and found this both helpful and entertaining. This antenna is backordered here in Toronto, but I have ordered it and waiting patiently.
Glad it was helpful! Maybe look for the MP or HP version of this antenna? They are rated for higher power which might be better if this is going to be your home antenna. This the low power version.
I have the medium and high power versions of this antenna. Shorten the end by 6’-1” to get all of the phone portions tuned better. They ship them long. Set up for CW, but again, just pull some wire through the end insulator, and zip tie it to the rest of the wire, to tune your antenna for voice.
Thanks for the video Mike. I have this antenna after I accidentally picked it up instead of the medium power. This video made me realize maybe it's time to up the cw learning. Obviously since it's the low power qrp version its appears to be best for lower on the bands. I added a counterpoise I believe 31 feet and seems to improve results. Thanks again Mike. Kevin W8BRY
Cool good to know a counterpoise works with this. A couple ppl have chimed in with different results so it's good to hear from your experience too. And yeah, we all need to up our CW learning for sure. 73.

I have the high power version of this antenna. Using as an inverted V up in a tree my swr is much higher than yours on all bands. You must have a got a good one.
I have the MFJ-1984LP. It did not come with the choke and I think that is because it is short wire version. If I put this on a base do I need a choke or to prevent RF from coming back in shack??
Maybe your signal was so good because you sending with 75 Watts? On my FT-891 i have to set HF SSB PWR for Phone and HF PWR for CW and Data-Modes. Anyway... i enjoy you Videos :)
@@hamradiotube You can test that really easy. Turn HF SSB PWR to 75W, Turn HF PWR to 100W and set MTR to PWR, talk into the mike an watch what the Meter shows . @@oliverkoller3964 It sounds like they are the same. HF power is for cw power and I think digital, and SSB is for, well, SSB. Weird how they split it up like that. Yaesu's menus definitely are not the most thought out.
That is going to depend on why it is too high. Without getting too deep into this topic, with this particular type of antenna (80 meter End Fed Half Wave), you should have a relatively good SWR on all the bands. If it is too high, your antenna is most likely either too long, or too short. If it's too long, you can simply cut the wire and raise the resonant frequency. If it's too short, you would have to either solder on more wire, or replace the wire with a longer run.
Hi Mike, nice work. If you want to make an UNUN check out the K1RF PowerPoint Presentation. I made a EFHW 49:1 cut for 40M, and it also tunes 20M and 15M easily. It is a great antenna, and fun project. Just make sure you run at least 1 Quarter Wave Counterpoise, really helps with SWR. You can never have enough Antennas! 73!!! AI6ZV

My first antenna is a HY END end fed antenna. That's the company name. Hy end. From California, on fifteen watts, I worked Hawaii, Virginia, Japan, and even a fast, week, difficult contact with a guy in General Santos City in the Philippines. With 100 watts I worked Slovenia, Japan several times, Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, other South Pacific Islands I don't remember the names of, Puerto Rico, New Year, Rhode Island, Florida a few times, Africa twice, oh I can't forget the island of Rora Tonga several times. My point? Even Qrp with a good end fed and you can get great DX even in these crappy conditions. I just finally managed to get a small 3 element yagi up a couple of week ago and now I m having O. k. Luck getting contacts in Europe. Without the beam I think I only had one European contact. Oh, a lot of South America, well several anyhow. With the end fed and the beam . It's easier with he beam. Now that I have a beginners beam I'm finally going to get a linear amplifier. Oh my God they are so much money. Anyhow the end fed. HY END end fed antennas. In the Netherlands I think. You CAN NOT GO WRONG. to top it off my antenna is what call their extra short. It gets 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10. I can tune up on the warc bands also. Oh I've even made 1000 mile contacts on 160. The "shorty" is only 15.5 meters long. It is super high quality as well.
Wow, that's certainly a lot of good contacts. I started off doing qrp portable but soon realized I wanted more power. I honestly just lack the patience. Only in state/national parks. I wish I was joking. It seems silly and I haven't gotten a really good answer but from what I understand, it has to do with the possibility of spreading disease from one tree to another (which I would imagine birds do) or the fact that you might break a tree branch if you pull on the wire/rope, disrupting the natural course of, well, nature. I don't get it either, but thems the rules.

I have to use an external tuner with mine as the tuner in my FT-891 or IC7300 wont tune this antenna, The only band it is good on is 17 meters. a couple of my external tuners won't even tune this antenna. You must have a got a good one.
Wow, I would have thought getting it higher would have been better. Interesting...
@@hamradiotube I followed him after his instructions by keeping the end with connector 8 feet off the ground and still the swrs are outrageous
Kool...I'm looking at this antenna and have FT891 and FT818 too. Thanks.
If your gonna use your 891 with it you may want to get the MP (medium power) version. It does 200 watts.
@@hamradiotube Yep.....I noticed that.....and will probably go with the medium version.
Very nice Mike! Would work great with my TS 480.
Just ordered the WRC SB 1000 TIA. When will the UAFI roll out?
Not sure about the WRC. I emailed them and haven't heard back yet.
Nice. How tall is that pole? It is far more than the 20 foot telescoping fiberglass crappie pole I just bought.
I was using a 10 meter Goture carbon fibre telescopic mast. There is a link in the description.
I feel a Speaker wire /80-10 comparison test video coming on. Thanks Mike good test vk5cz ..
Hmmmmm, I don't think that would be a fair comparison. Although this one seemed to like 20 best, so you never know.
Nice Rig, n Great antenna for Low Power cheers n 73 A92GW
I have the MFJ-1984LP. It did not come with the choke and I think that is because it is short wire version. If I put this on a base do I need a choke or to prevent RF from coming back in shack??
I would doubt it. Put it up. If it’s noisy put a couple chokes on it.
Thanks. Will do
Nice video
Maybe your signal was so good because you sending with 75 Watts? On my FT-891 i have to set HF SSB PWR for Phone and HF PWR for CW and Data-Modes. Anyway... i enjoy you Videos :)
No way man, 5 watts!
@@hamradiotube You can test that really easy. Turn HF SSB PWR to 75W, Turn HF PWR to 100W and set MTR to PWR, talk into the mike an watch what the Meter shows . After that, turn HF PWR all the way down to 5W, talk again and watch the Power Meter, it will show you, mor or less, the same as before. I would be surprised, if the US version of the Radio differ that much in function from the European version, so i still believe you sending out 75W.
Oliver Koller um...thanks Oliver. I’m fully aware of how to set the power on my radio, which is how I’m able to tell you I was running 5 watts.
@@hamradiotube Ok i think i had to belive you. But thats is really wierd, thats means my radio works not the same way as yours. I know that because i made that "mistake" 4 days ago I set HF PWR to 5W, spoke into the mike and my crossneedle meter, (set to 30Watts) flew right away to top scale. Then i checked my power settings and set HF SSB PWR to 5 Watts and everithing behives like it should. Bevore i write my post i double checked the behaviour and is exacactly like i described it. By the way, go on with you videos i really enjoy them. vy73 HB9HBO
@@oliverkoller3964 It sounds like they are the same. HF power is for cw power and I think digital, and SSB is for, well, SSB. Weird how they split it up like that. Yaesu's menus definitely are not the most thought out.
What app are you using on your ipad? 73, KD9EGI
yes. please tell. I have an ipad mini and have no idea what to do with it ham radio wise.
Its called HamLog
K8MRD RADIO STUFF Thanks. look neat if your into loading up to LOTW or QRZ. still seems the ipad is mostly useless for Ham uses.
Love the intros. lol 73 N5AAS
So what do you have to do when the SWR is too high?
That is going to depend on why it is too high. Without getting too deep into this topic, with this particular type of antenna (80 meter End Fed Half Wave), you should have a relatively good SWR on all the bands. If it is too high, your antenna is most likely either too long, or too short. If it's too long, you can simply cut the wire and raise the resonant frequency. If it's too short, you would have to either solder on more wire, or replace the wire with a longer run.
Nice review! What's that lil computer you got there? 73, WB8AM
Its an iPad mini with a bluetooth keyboard. Links are in the description.
Looks like it needs shortening slightly for use on the phone part of the bands.
yeah just a couple feet probably. I need to get that antenna back out again. It is really good.
@@hamradiotube It was quite impresive on the video. Great video production by the way.
73!!! AI6ZV
Mike shortin the end of the antenna, a little at a time.

Hey, thanks
What’s the mast you used
I was using a Goture 10M carbon fiber rod and a Shakespear Wonderpole. Both of which don't seem to exist anymore.
The humanity!
I’m surprised, I figured SWR would be all over the place.
The ham gods have been good to me. I was honestly surprised too though.
Which power splitter is that?
That is the HamRadioWorkbench 12v power supply. I did a whole video on it.
Yes I've heard of Hy End, and I've heard nothing but good things. I assume you've been in the ham game a lot longer than me. I'm still very much learning the sport and am having a lot of fun experimenting with antennas. Stay tuned to the channel. I have "A Lot" of new things on the way that I am going to try. As much as I hate to say it, QRP is going to be a part of it hihi. I may or may not have a qrp radio coming to me on Tuesday. 73 New Ham, and thanks for watching and commenting.

Can’t throw antennas in trees?
Not in state parks in Michigan.

Can't put an Antenna in a Tree in MIchigan? Law,Ordinance? Antenna Police?
Never heard of such a thing....LOL !
It’s just in state parks to preserve nature.

The beginning is a bit creepy
Haha I had to re-watch it. Been years since I made this video. Still cracks me up!
You can take drugs for that....
What you got??? haha!
Why in God's name can't you throw a wire in a tree in Michigan? Please tell me you were joking.
I have this antenna ,and its junk. I have better luck just it as a sloper ,
I don't think it's bad. It's got really great rx too. I do wish the wire was thinner. For being a qrp antenna they could have shed some weight off of it.
@@hamradiotube try it as a sloper just a long wire I think you will see a difference
You probably need to trim it. I have 2 of these, and they work great.
Wait - there is a law in Mich that you can’t throw a wire over a tree ? I’m having issues with that. Did the trees protest ? Great Video - thanks for posting. John KD2ODE
No, I didn't clarify. Michigan State Parks don't allow anything in trees. Regular parks are free game.
K8MRD RADIO STUFF Thanks. That seems slightly less alarming. Here in New Jersey the sling shot that I tend to use to throw a weight over a branch is legally classified as a weapon - so I guess we have our own issues.
@@johnpeterson7264 Well, I had the unfortunate time in my life where I had to live in NJ, and I left a lot of my guns at home. I'll tell you what though, the people of NJ are amazing!
