  • A sea shanty fan video about Our Flag Means Death: Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard romance. My seven year old loves this sea shanty and requested I make a video for Stede and Blackbeard. This is a true story about the most painful video challenge I've ever received.

This is so nice, I love it! Everything about it, but especially the nostalgic editing -- those fade-y and grainy shots are so good. With the kids, it's like Stede is telling them the story, the same way he tells them about the pirates he aspires to be. :,)
PLUS it seems that the wellerman was a New Zealand song, and OFMD is, like, at least halfway a new zealand show, so I think that's super cool, too. Thank you for putting this masterpiece together and sharing it with us!

please excuse my rambling, it's about to get Poetry Analysis up in here. So the Wellerman is the supply ship -- good stuff is on the wellerman. The Billy of Tea is a whaler, and her crew is doing some seriously hard, rough work. So Stede is, in fact, the Wellerman and Ed and/or the Stede-less Revenge are the Billy, at least at the end. It's kind of a metaphor for life in general, of course, good times and bad times, as we see in the middle of this video. Stede's spent his whole life waiting for his own wellerman, his escape to a life of piracy, but I particularly like the way the end of this video lines them up so clearly as the ships/crews.
(I'm going to assume that more comments are better for yt numbers than one super-long TLDR comment)

OH and some meta! I love that you've combined two things that have brought communities together so strongly! OFMD has garnered a *huge* queer-community and fandom-community response, and The Wellerman and other shanties brought a huge chunk of the internet together during 2020 when we were all isolated together. Both elements of this video will be very nostalgic to a lot of us, eventually! (And that also makes me realize that the Wellerman had a message for us, then, too, about doing the hard stuff and waiting for good times to come around again.)

@@sullendragon8900 I really appreciate this response. I asked my 7 year old for a song challenge to make a video, and she chose this. I researched the lyrics to understand the song references and damn that song is dark! But isn't it wonderful, the New Zealand connection? Your analysis is not rambling, its fabulous!

@@sullendragon8900 I just wanted to add that I feel so seen that my video resonated with you and so many others. I hadn't made one in a year and my skills and editing tools (imovie) aren't at the level others possess, so its so gratifying!
