  • Tucked away deep in the mountains of Northern California lies the Williams Loop. The creation of the loop allowed the railroad route to maintain a consistent 1% grade. A consistent grade helps engineers safely move heavy trains through the mountains.
This iconic piece of railroad infrastructure has been in place for over 100 years. While train traffic can be scarce at times, Union Pacific trains still routinely use this route.
During light snow showers, a 100+ car coal train can be seen looping over itself as is descends the Feather River Route near Quincy, California.
