    Jordan Weisman straight up said he wanted to create a Cyberpunk RPG but Mike Pondsmith beat him to the punch. So he went back to the drawing board and decided to create a world based on all the 2012 prophecies that his dad was a fan of.
    William Gibson didn't sue cause he didn't think it was worth it. In his own words "I never earned a nickel, but I wouldn't sue. It's a fair cop, I'm sure there's plenty who could sue me."

    Neuromancer is probably my #1 favorite novel of all time, but William Gibson has always been such a twat about it. It's not like he personally invented everything in his novel either. There are similarities between Shadowrun and his work, yes. Sometimes significant similarities. Because they're the SAME FUCKING GENRE. If a sci-fi show has humanoid aliens and space ships and laser weapons that doesn't mean it's a ripoff of Star Trek. Not every fantasy novel with elves and magic and dragons is a ripoff of Lord of the Rings. The man acts like he is the sole creator and owner of everything in the cyberpunk genre.

    • @StratEdgyProductions
      @StratEdgyProductions  4 года назад +41

      I can feel you on that, but sometimes, man... It feels a bit more than inspiration. I mean... Molly is what really did it for me. I knew about Shadowrun before Neuromancer so imagine my surprise when the claws came out.

      @@bigboysdotcom745 I wouldn't say it sucks but IMO the Bridge Trilogy is WAY better than the Sprawl Trilogy. But Mona Lisa Overdrive is such a good ending to the Sprawl Trilogy it makes up for the speed-addled writing of the first book. Idoru is for sure my favorite book he ever wrote, it feels like the perfect blend of sci fi wackiness that's still grounded in reality (to a degree).

    • @bigboysdotcom745
      @bigboysdotcom745 4 года назад +6

      @@technoruffles7747 it's bad mostly due to the characters and nearly impossible to follow plot.
      I know it's based heavily on noir, and the characters reflect that, but the only real moment where a character is fleshed out is when Molly recounts a story about an old boyfriend. The rest of the book is basically globe-trotting and getting into trouble. Noir isnt an excuse to write bad characters that nobody gives a damn about.
      The second half of the problem is the writing style, which again, makes sense since its told from the perspective of a dude hopped up on 50 different drugs trying to describe the things happening to him. It gets to a point at the end where the POV is switched a dozen different times on one page during the climax, IIRC. Idk, it's just... messy. More atmosphere than actual story elements.
      It's far from bad if you consider what it's trying to do (the man is the godfather of written cyberpunk fiction for a reason- the way he describes things is leagues beyond anything I've ever read), but Gibson almost goes out of his way to avoid writing conventions that should be in every book (that awful, meaningless ending) and the book suffers at a basic story level because of it.

    Happy to see this game getting some love. It's true though, each installment is drastically better than the last. Though Hong Kong can be really dialogue heavy at times, which I like...but if you want to see every conversation it can mean long stretches of just reading. A shame you did not talk about the editor though, as I felt that was a big part of the appeal of this game. You can make modules to share with others.
    P.S. the matrix gets far better in the other installments, though I almost found Hong Kong's to be a little too involved, and almost like a separate game within a game. I was often just wanting to get back to the normal story and sometimes it could even be a challenge that took me some time.

    • @goransekulic3671
      @goransekulic3671 4 года назад +1

      HK's dialogue is...different than of the other two, not only in size. It's almost like they used another editor or something. There's an awful lot of white noise and ramble in HK which feels both annoying and unreal. Like how Racter decides to go all in on his story. Instead of focusing on things that relate to him(...like Eiger?), he decides to describe the entire history period! And rant like a mofo. Most of writing in HK is like that. Can't really get over it. Not after Dragonfall.

    Shadowrun Returns was initially pitched, advertised and sold as a tool set more than an actual campaign. The Dead Man's Switch campaign that came with the tool set was largely just am example of what kind of stories players could make using the tool set.
    Think of it like Neverwinter Nights. The official campaign is pretty weak, but the tool set was extremely robust and the community made a bunch of campaigns using it that were much better.
    Dragonfall is when HBS actually put forth serious effort into telling a compelling narrative with interesting characters and meaningful choices. This was largely because they had more time to work on the campaign itself with the tool set finished.
    There's even a version of Dead Man's Switch available on the Steam Workshop that you can run through the improved version of the game that Dragonfall runs on, and I highly recommend picking it up instead of the original game.

    My first char was in SD Dragonfall : I wanted to try a little bit of everything so ended up with a mage girl who could still use handguns and had a little bit of cyberware. Clearly not optimal, but it helped me understanding various game mechanics.
    In Shadowrun Returns, I went for a Decker/Rigger. The run was totally brainless : I didn't need any teammates as my two overpower drones would be more resilient, aim better and deal more damage than any meatbag-npc. That was odly satisfying.
    Finally, for Hongkong I decided to experiment with a cyber-adept Troll (as this game lets you be a little more crazy with cyberware) : having a tank with 5 AP(when fully buffed), permanent "mid-cover bonus" rushing every single ennemy at close range to destroy them with a flurry of cyber claws-slashes was truly an unforgettable experience.

      That's why Hong Kong felt like a slap in the face. Really disappointing.

    Nothing quite like realizing how bad (or how late bloom) your character is as soon as you get to a difficult fight. It feels like no one ever quite nails melee the way they should in so many games. Either they have to buff out the ass and are way too gear reliant yet still feel flimsier than a balsa wood skyscraper or they're a walk in the park zero effort one-man zerg rush that doesn't merely ruin days but entire weeks. Then again, the same can be said of magic, and often that tends to be even worse in its extremes. I remember KotOR with a force caster build comfortably destroying many encounters yet as soon as I'd fight a boss they'd never (or rarely) pass DCs and be reduced to being the galaxy's most inaccurate wet noodle, meanwhile a melee combat build is a lava hot knife cutting through pre melted butter at every turn. The chronic inaccuracies of debuff and control magic in RPGs has often lead to me missing out on when the game actually designed them to be useful. Witcher 3 suffered from this, too, because a Sign build means your sword is a toothpick against any of the big bads yet they're also 95% resistant to fire and usually immune to every other sign's effects. Every boss (especially late/end game and DLC) in that game was a slog while every other encounter was usually dead in a single Igni.

      I never had problems with any fights in any shadowrun games (except maybe the last one in Dragonfall, you know the one), and I haven't read guides on which class to choose, which companion to take.
      And I played on hard(Returns/Hong Kong)/very hard(Dragonfall).
      Maybe I was lucky, or my team composition was on point.
      My classes were:
      Returns - Elf Street samurai
      Dragonfall - Human Mage
      Hong Kong - Dwarf Physical adept

    As someone who GMs Shadowrun (fairly) regularly, I always recommend to any new players that they check out these games to get a better sense of the world and such. Although I usually suggest that they start with Dragonfall and then move on to the other two games if they liked it.

Plus, the game gives you a decker for this mission. But neither of them can't get it done. Possible some programs out there I should have gotten that would have made it easier. But who knows.

    lol... idk what's up with the wattpad thing at the start. But I see what you did there with Armitage.. Also, shadowrrun obviously takes a lot from Neuromancer (so does cyberpunk red/2077. Characters, backstories, organizations etc). But I like such blatant references to the books like that Armitage character. I even hope his story is a bit similar.
    Also it makes me feel special like a little special snow flake because I know most people playing the game probably have no idea who armitage is.

    The one thing I find wrong and annoying with the opening fight is that it doesn't read what you put for your character other than whether it was a pregen or not. Lost much sanity to it. It was remedied in the next two games but it still hurts that my min maxed character couldn't do shit.
    The sequels got way better, even if the bugs got weirder
