I was actually in a Christian musical through my church growing up, and I still remember the lyrics: "Bull frogs and butterflies, they've both been born again." Because apparently metamorphosis is the same thing as being reborn as well. As well as acorns growing into oak trees: "He's changing the acorn into a mighty oak; he's making me holy and teaching me to grow. Learning to trust and obey, I'm getting stronger each day." I still remember these lyrics, and I was five when I was in that play.....
Fish and Fowl are of biblical importance especially when looking at the story of Jesus and his disciples feeding the mass, and the dove (fowl) being the symbol of the Holy Spirit.

Most Christians barely know the new testament let alone the old. They have a vague overview, can quote half a dozen scriptures and refuse to entertain anything outside of the echo chamber. The creation story in Genesis, from the beginning of the universe to the rise of life to the problematic condition of humankind is just a handfull of pages. That's all there is, and everything else they think they "know" has to come from other, outside sources. These sources encompass the totality of human knowledge about cosmology, geology, biology, history, sociology, psychology, etc. It takes years to get a rough overview in one field, decades to become proficient, and there still will be things people don't know. To be knowledgable in all fields is basically impossible. But to these people... they just ignore that. They don't want to spend all that time and effort. They stick to the three pages, fill it up with "something I once heard somewhere"... and go "whoa!", impressed by their own deep wisdom and understanding.
@@Groffili They're not willing to investigate further then the DNA. What if the DNA had a precursor such as the RNA? If humans were created in the image and likeness of God then at what resolution would that be true? The eyes evolved only to see visible light (some with ability to see a little bit of UV) but if we look at ourselves at other magnifications we see a completely different body. With proper instruments we would see our bodies at the cellular, atomic, subatomic levels and humans (human's bodies) would look like tiny dots when viewed from afar at macro resolutions. So then if you can't zoom in and out of God's body (that is if God has a body) at scales then again how could humans be created in the image and likeness of God(s)? If God can reduce itself to the size of an atom or increase itself to the size of a hyper giant star then why can't humans do the same? If the human body has some sort of special-ness to it due to the claim made in God's image/likeness then where is that quality hiding? While humans can unlock the secrets of biology Theists still have not proven how Biology (natural world) has/had a creator.
OMG - I am just one chapter in and I want to vomit. The dude making a connection between birds and fish = to born again is delusional. And the people there tossing his salad going, "oooh aaahhh!!" like it's some profound revelation is crazy.
Yup! The ironic thing is that he dismisses the fetal stage as being a life in his eagerness to add an extra 'born again' life. By that logic there shouldn't be any religious objection to abortion, as he's just said it doesn't count.
Here's what you do when you have a thought like this: 1) Ask yourself if anything on the list didn't fit the theme. If so, you're off-base and need to rethink. 2) Ask yourself if anything NOT on the list _does_ fit the theme, that God just forgot about in his infinite wisdom. 3) Ask yourself if this connection is something that makes sense to make in this circumstance. Why are we reading a list of types of animals that exist, thinking of the methods of their birth when they weren't mentioned, and tying that to the idea of being Born Again when _that_ wasn't mentioned? Is it more reasonable to believe this is just a simple list? 4) Remind yourself that coincidences definitively exist. Because if you assume they don't, then every single seeming coincidence across all of space and time MUST all have a deeper meaning, and all of those deeper meanings must build towards the same one noncontradictory worldview. So if even a single one doesn't have a deeper meaning, or if the only deeper meanings lead it in the opposite direction, the "there are no coincidences" belief is proven unequivocably false. And if any coincidences exist, remember that this could just be one of them, and rate that chance against the likelihood from point 3. 5) Even after all of this, double-check with a friend who will also go through this list rather than blindly accept that you're correct. They may have information you lack that weakens or strengthens the idea, or changes the "how likely is it?" math in a meaningful way. Do all of that, fairly and without bias towards your cool new idea you really want to believe in, without the idea breaking at any point in the process, and you MIGHT be onto something. Even then it hasn't been proven conclusively true. And as sad and unfulfilling as that sounds, this is just a small fraction of the crap scientific ideas put themselves through on a regular basis, to weed out bad ideas, leaving only the good. If Science can do all of THAT, the Word of your God is capable of surviving at least this much. To disagree is to call your God weak. To try it and have him fail is for him to BE weak. If an untrue-idea-destroyer threatens you (as it seems to threaten so many apologists with how fervently they fight to avoid it), then that is a very bad sign for your ideas.
@@MindShift-Brandon I mean, it's not just them either. This sort of thoughtlessness is pretty standard human behavior. (Though an unhealthy amount of people are encouraged to play into this human shortcoming deliberately) The Scientific Method's claim to fame is being the only way we have of putting that bias aside long enough to see the world without our bad-prescription rainbow-tinted glasses we all wear. And despite the "Us vs Them" some sects get caught up in about science vs religion, anyone can use the scientific method to come to their conclusions, and any scientist can falter and fail to apply it properly. It's just up to all the others doing it right to call them out on it when they mess up (or even try lying). Gotta make sure their work gets Reviewed by a few of their Peers. If only there were a name for that process.... :P Incidentally, I'm starting to like that mental image of a paper shredder than only tears up incorrect ideas, and lets true ones pass through safely. Could make for a fun metaphor to explore further. (This is more or less how all my ideas for books first form :P)
Regardless, we should lift each other up and correct brothers and sisters in private. Seeking for truth and love. Show grace to eachother for the purpose of life, kingdom of God. The bible is fractal, meaning that the message is the same regardless of how you look at it and the deeper you go. Revelations and connects are everywhere and God is intentional about everything. The truth and knowledge is too lofty for us to attain.

As a Christian, I hear you. I think there’s a massive amount of believers that don’t have necessary critical thinking skills when it comes to the bible, and take every teaching at face value without thinking through wether it actually aligns with what the bible even says. That being said, there are many Christians that do. Just looking at the writings of C.S. Lewis for example (fun fact - Tolkien played a part in convincing him of the truths of the gospels), and minds like John Lennox and Gavin Ortlund to name a few. I too was of the same mind that just doing a bit of critical thinking debunked the whole religion. I left the church after growing up in it. A few years later, I then discovered the evidence for Jesus and the scriptures and realised it wasn’t just some myth and fairytales, but that it actually held historical weight. I admire your attitude and thirst for truth. This search does not contradict the bible, in fact it’s for it. The bible doesn’t call for blind faith. John 20:29 “Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’” • While Jesus blesses those who believe without seeing, the context is significant. Thomas believed after being presented with evidence, and Jesus does not condemn seeking understanding but points to a deeper trust in God’s promises.
About the third point. What current are we going against??? How are we going against the flow of the world? When God created us and all the animals, didnt he do it so everything was good? When he created Adam and Eve, did he mean for them to go against some flow of the world?
he's referring to how the world is evil and sinful post fall and christians, once born again, now have the power to be "not of the world" as so many verses command. still ridiculous.
@MindShift-Brandon Sure, but God would have to make the birds and fish they way they are before the downfall in order to have the metaphor later. So the downfall was either planned or God knew it would happen and we go back to the good old free will problem and God's all-knowingness. Ofc they never think about all of these problems.

I think it's fine to consider basic biological facts to be mystical-- as long as you are actually sticking to the basic biological facts. It's certainly true that science is about exploring the unknown (at least when it's not driven by grant money), which is why we have scientific advancement-- so sometimes what was once a fact ("can't split the atom") is no longer a fact.

@@fcchannel6162 You're right, we don't know what happened before the big bang. But introducing a god doesn't solve the issue, it only anthropomorphizes it.
@@fcchannel6162 So you're basically appealing to the watchmaker argument. It's a weak argument though, since the same type of reasoning with similar common-sense assumptions can lead to a conclusion that doesn't fit theist views: Every watchmaker has a mother who isn't themselves, therefore god has a mother who isn't himself. This reasoning follows the same method as the watchmaker argument. So if you accept the watchmaker argument you have to accept that god has a mother who isn't himself. Or you can decide that the second argument shows that this method of reasoning is faulty, and therefore so is the watchmaker argument. Also, when you say that god seems like the best explanation of how something came from nothing, you are implying that you're definition of something doesn't include god himself, which is clearly avoiding the issue. Well said. As you know, the Bible warns against "adding to" it's original words. But interpretations do just that. Interpreters are basically saying, "This is the way I would have put it or wrote it down if I would have written this passage or verse." Whether they are conscious of it or not, they are saying that their interpretation, or, what they've added,is superior to the plain text-and that's the way it should have been written down in the first place.
Not to mention the bajillion different translations of the Bible, in many languages and from many eras. Translations are interpretations. And then there are the books that get left out or left in, depending on the religio-political zeitgeist of the times...
If I was still a Christian, I would have absolutely pushed back against what he said. I would have stated other religions use very similar reasonings to justify their theological understandings, and that we cannot depend on our environment to determine the intentions of God, or we run the risk of wildly contradicting conclusions. I give an example below. It was dominion over all animals according to the narrative, not just fish and birds. I guess he forgot about insects, reptiles and amphibians. Are we supposed to determine some theological concept from the jewel wasp in which it paralyzes cockroaches, bites off their antenna and performs precision surgery to lead them to a burrow so that they can lay their egg on the helpless cockroach which will then eat them alive? Or how about cuckoo birds and bees laying their eggs in the nests of other birds and beehives? Now that is a theological concept I think is accurate in view of our world today. There are more species of beetles than any lifeform on earth. Should we therefore think God only cares about beetles because he made so many of them? I also see a lot of this from apologists like John Lennox, who a lot of Christians look to. Just listen to his apologetics and you can see very similar vibes.
I had to stop and put down my Coffee and actually scream ``Oh cmon!`` when they made the connection about fish and birds having two births (not even true) as metaphoric of Christians being born again. The overreaching Christians need to do, a real God wouldn`t need people to do this for him.
Thank you for showing us awareness for possible misleading walks in Christianity. God bless you and those who seek protection from false perception. May the form of mockery and condemnation be rebuked out the hearts of those who fail to respond with the fruits of the spirit.
Yeah, the bible is a "mystery text" and anyone can use it to make it mean whatever they want. As you said, as with other religious texts as well. The cherry picking is incredible. 😮

The first thing we get into is birds lay eggs and fish lay eggs too, gotta understand the original Hebrew to know that though. I literally don’t even understand what my man is trying to say.
@ Ah yes, must’ve been his follow up about how birds defy gravity or fish swim upstream. Very deep stuff that definitely isn’t revealed unless you read genesis in the original “Aramaic”? But let’s just assume he misspoke. He must know the distinction between Aramaic and Hebrew, right?

When a Christian says, "if you read it in the original Hebrew/Aramaic...", it's just their pretentious way of saying, "you have to believe me because I'm smarter than you are." As a Christian, I make sure it’s essential not to reach for connections. God can see through my lies or reached conclusions, and knows what I do and don’t believe. I have problems with the Bible, but through God I’ve been able to come to terms with that. Through what Jesus said, I’ve been able to become a better person, and if all else fails, I believe in His word. Because that’s what has worked for me.
it truly is amazing that once the science became unavoidable, many christians said it was so obvious and evolution fits perfectly into the bible the whole time.

I'm just glad that (for the time being) none of my evangelical/born-again relatives have tried to push this around or to me. "It's so deep, bro" he said before plunging headfirst into the proverbial children's pool that is genesis. Meanwhile the mariana trench aka biology goes "am I a joke to you?"
ohhh love that.

Here's what you do when you have a thought like this:
1) Ask yourself if anything on the list didn't fit the theme.
If an untrue-idea-destroyer threatens you (as it seems to threaten so many apologists with how fervently they fight to avoid it), then that is a very bad sign for your ideas.
what a lovely list, and how utterly said how far off it is from how most believers process their religion.
@@MindShift-Brandon I mean, it's not just them either. This sort of thoughtlessness is pretty standard human behavior. (Though an unhealthy amount of people are encouraged to play into this human shortcoming deliberately)
The Scientific Method's claim to fame is being the only way we have of putting that bias aside long enough to see the world without our bad-prescription rainbow-tinted glasses we all wear.

John 20:29
“Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”
• While Jesus blesses those who believe without seeing, the context is significant.

@MindShift-Brandon Sure, but God would have to make the birds and fish they way they are before the downfall in order to have the metaphor later. Usually such types of "logic" and "wisdom" annoy me so much that I develop a fever after listening! However this time it just made me laugh a lot. Perhaps because of all the "Whoaaa"s. Thanks for another great episode.
Hello, thank you for launching this channel, I really appreciate hearing your thoughts on Christianity! I've never converted to the religion due to the same thoughts you've stated in previous videos. Would love to see your thoughts on physical evidence for/against Christianity and similarities/differences between various NDEs/visions/dreams from people if you ever plan to tackle those subjects!
thanks for that, will do.
Yes, I'm particularly intrigued by detailed NDEs from devout Christians - including in some cases wives or daughters of pastors - who report never encountering any entity they could identify as Jesus, contrary to their confident expectations.
The less you pay attention in school the more really basic biological facts appear to be mystical.
education is absolutely an issue for where faith flourishes.
@@sundayoliver3147 I don't, but maybe we have a different idea of what mystical means.
dude this resonates hard with me because I remember thinking “if ‘mas’ means ‘more’ in Spanish, does Christmas mean ‘more christ’?”
in hindsight that’s such an embarrassing “connection” to make
Yeah, but people do this all the time in all seriousness. My fav so far is: “Say Jesus in Spanish. What does that tell you?” 😂
@@davidmgilbreathI actually did that a few times, and every time I did, my mind immediately jumped to Die Hard With a Vengeance - and perhaps naturally, specifically to Samuel L Jackson.
😂 religion makes you talk like an idiot.
Well, christ means anointed one, anointing somebody is to smear (holy) oils on them, so christmas "obviously" means "more oil smears".
I like this and I’m stealing it
Watching this doesn’t change my faith just shows how important it is to look at whole context of things not stuff that just sounds good this a perfect example of leaning on your own understanding of things instead of examining the entire picture not just parts you “think” are what you believe plus you shouldn’t look at the followers of Christ as the example that’s just ignorant were humans and as shown here their definitely miss interpreting what the Bible says the Lord should be your only example of Christianity not your neighbor who you don’t really know
Failing so utterly in such a holistic way about both simple biology _and_ what the Bible says _and_ at making any meaningful observation about both surely must be some sort of performance art?
now imaging these two in the studio, but you zoom out and its behind glass in a pseudo-science museum. And the little id tag simply says my new favorite word, "Apophenia"

Wait, do our stupid English Bibles leave out biological information about how fish and birds work that was found in the Hebrew and Aramaic portions of the Bible? Is Big Bible conning us all?
Seriously though what is he talking about? If taken at his word he is suggesting that he gained this knowledge of how these animals are born by reading the Hebrew manuscripts. Either that’s not what he meant to say, or he’s just trying to make himself sound more authoritative by using what sounds to your run of the mill default-Christian to be scholarly language, like just blurting at any point in your comment that you’ve read the Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts and just leaving it at that
yup it was an insane line!

With the US election today, I can't help but connect this Christian pseudo-wisdom to the multitude of politicians who also think this way, both Republican and Democrat. I seem to be in the minority of people who has been and still is very concerned about the faith and superstition of politicians. These are people who, in many ways, have our wellbeing and lives in their hands. How refreshing would it be to see a candidate who hears stuff like this and says, "Although I respect their faith, we have gotta grow up and move away from this stuff. This is obviously not true" When social media influencers make these wide connections, I laugh. When politicians do it, I can't help but feel a pit in my stomach.
So well said! agreed.

@@fcchannel6162 You're right, we don't know what happened before the big bang. But introducing a god doesn't solve the issue, it only anthropomorphizes it.
@@pmcate2 best explanation to me, how can something come from nothing.
Also regarding the big bang; you will never hear top notch physicists say that the big bang came from nothing. Pop science has created that myth.

Appreciate the effort you put into proving the dumb Christian jokes correct. BTW, do you believe, as so many Christians do, that believing in Jesus is important for uniting families? Well, Matthew 10: 34-39 has something to say about that:
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s enemies will be those of his household. Starting in the 80s, homeschooling took over evangelical households so you have millennials and younger who have essentially never had a decent science lesson, nor have they had any instruction on how to think critically. They are taught to NOT think too much, that it's sinful to ask questions.
Wow, that's terrifying. No wonder we got a second Trump term. I'm trying to understand how the other side thinks and it's worse than I thought.

The “Bible” has been add to, and taken away from, since before it’s inception. 🤷
Not to mention the bajillion different translations of the Bible, in many languages and from many eras. Translations are interpretations. And then there are the books that get left out or left in, depending on the religio-political zeitgeist of the times...
@@sundayoliver3147 exactly!

The first thing we get into is birds lay eggs and fish lay eggs too, gotta understand the original Hebrew to know that though. I literally don’t even understand what my man is trying to say.
but dont forget its why his bible studies are filling up, he says.
But it’s deep man! It’s not like almost every other goddamn animal that lays eggs pairs off bc that’s just how sexual reproduction happened to evolve in the majority of species; no, clearly that’s just the birds and fish! /j
In all seriousness though, I’m barely a few minutes in and already getting an aneurysm
When a Christian says, "if you read it in the original Hebrew/Aramaic...", it's just their pretentious way of saying, "you have to believe me because I'm smarter than you are." They don't actually speak any ancient language, they just got it from a study guide that says someone said somebody else said that's what it says. The will never cite a reliable scholastic (i.e., non-fundamentalist) source.
As a Christian, I make sure it’s essential not to reach for connections.
I heard some believers say that evolution matches with genesis pretty well because the apes or common ancestors we come from are adam and eve....🤦🤦🤦
it truly is amazing that once the science became unavoidable, many christians said it was so obvious and evolution fits perfectly into the bible the whole time.
Lol! I had a friend who said that too xD it's wild for sure

I'll laughing because they are funny but I'm saddened in that some ways they are true. I honestly dis not understand at all what they were saying in that video and I believe for reasons much greater as do others that I know.
I'm only half way through the video: wtf is he saying that birds come from water?! And only birds and fish come from eggs?! Does he not know about turtles?! Or frogs?! This really hurts.n
