t was 1945. I was sixteen. A “friend” took me to the Stuyvesant
Casino to hear some “authentic New Orleans Jazz.” I think it was
in Brooklyn. The leader was Bunk Johnson on Trumpet. Jim Robinson was
on trombone, Baby Dodds on drums, George Lewis on clarinet and Don
Ewell on piano. Ewell was the only Caucasian in the group. The
previous year, George Lewis had recorded Burgundy Street Blues. The
correct pronunciation places the accent on “gun”.
I fell in love with
the music and for the next couple of weeks I was there every night
until the group returned to New Orleans. The closest I ever came to
similar enjoyment was about 30 years later when Kid Ory was at the
Beverly Caverns in Los Angeles playing Muskrat Ramble. Teddy Buckner
was with him. I went there so often that Ory often say at my table
and we exchanged anecdotes.
I’m now 90 years
old and almost deaf but I have wonderful memories of my introduction
to New Orleans Jazz.
that’s a great story old cat, thanks!
Ed, I'm a few years younger than you. I, too, was taken to the Casino in the Forties when I was young, It was was in Manhattan not Brooklyn. What I was remember most was that a pitcher of beer was $1 and my best friend's bohemian parents insisted I drink with them, a habit I resisted, but, I'm happy to say, no longer do. I had an entirely different impression. The evening ended with a lot of white guys playing WHEN THE SAINTS GO WATCHING IN as loudly as they good while a lot of drunken Ivy League guys and their dates screamed and shouted. This put me off Dixieland for years, and it wasn't until twenty years later when a pal played me one of Jack Teagarden's 1960s Roulette recordings that I finally came to appreciate what wonderful music it could be. Still do.
Your life is beautiful poetry.
that's a beautiful story. Thank You.
Ed Rose Thank you for sharing your story! I would love to experience something like that in the future
The originals got me into liking jazz
That's awesome, Klaus!
Right! Tvd and the original forever
OMG SAAAAAME!
same!!!
I've been into jazz, especially New Orleans Jazz but when I saw the originals and they were in New Orleans with flashbacks and Jazz playing I was in loveee
Growing up in New Orleans it's hard to not hear live music. It's everywhere. At home, at festivals, even walking the streets it's everywhere.
That is just awesome.
Can’t wait to move there when I get older and move out of my parents house😂
Preach it, tell that story like it is and always will be.

@@TheJeraldmcclain that's a stereotype of new orleans (just because a lot of blacks live there)
@@nobakwaas5161 Actually its not a stereotype. Its bound to happen if you spend enough time here. Believe me, it has nothing to do with race! lmao 😂 & that's how you can tell someone has never been here & is still trying to give advice on it! But by all means come experience it, theres no words to explain....everything you've heard is true and its absolutely beautiful in its entirety
I live in new Orleans and I had a friend ask me if I ever got tired of hearing jazz. So I took him down here and now he cant get enough jazz.
That's really nice of you to do that, Christian.
One can get burnt out from listening to too much jazz, so I switch to strings.
Ah it takes me back to being a small child walking through the French quarter with my family. The jazz ringing through the air, the sugar of beignets all over my shirt wearing a little cafe dumonde hat. Sweet memories.
Wonderful memories.
That sounds great

I'll be there in January--for the 11th time. I could never live in NOLA but it's a great long weekend getaway.
Bobby Banshee That's great, you're lucky for being able to go there so much. If you don't mind me prying, why are you unable to live there, if I may ask? Is NOLA expensive to live in?
My grandmother was from New Orleans and she would listen to this all the time and got me addicted. It’s great for when I’m studying because it’s just upbeat enough to keep me awake without distracting me.
That's way awesome!
I'm getting those Princess and the Frog vibes listening to this.

No stop all forever
The first visit to New Orleans, I saw Al Hirt and Pete Fountain. Then I went on active duty with the army. I kept hearing the music while crawling in the dirt.
The first song just makes me want to be in a 20's jazz restaurant in new Orleans reading, studying, drinking and just dancing away into the music (Thank you my Sweet Love 🌞🌹🌹💃💃💎👏😘🤫)

I agree "the originals" also got into jazz
Miss this so much, grew up in New Orleans, right by the river,we’d take the ferry to the aquarium and the French quarter, eat real amazing food, like ground patty, the most amazing burgers you ever had, listen to all the live music, and then go home at the end of the day, stupid hurricane took all that away and now we’re stuck in Texas, which is nice, but it’s not home. Sadly most of the stuff I grew up with is long gone now, like Ground Patty.
Thank you for sharing these great memories.
New Orleans is one of those awesome cities that has its "soundtrack" playing 24/7/365, rain or shine. Wherever you go in the area, you're gonna hear people expressing themselves thru music.
Yes indeed.
I live 15 min from New Orleans and this just plays in the streets of the French Quarter with chariots driving by and the smell of Cajun cooking in the air and relxing at Café Du Monde. Mardi Gras is an excellent time as well, weather beautiful during Nov and December on a good day.
Hi +james frazier , I am glad that you liked this New Orleans jazz collection.

Yep. Only NY could even compete
Do you though? That's what makes New Orleans unique. New York has plenty unique things going for it. The hustle and bustle of one of the biggest metropolis' on Earth being on of them
People who disliked this should be tested for Covid. They've lost their taste.
:-)
Amen to that!!
I absolutely LOVE New Orleans and EVERYTHING about it. What a magical place! I never even liked jazz until visiting New Orleans and now it warms my heart.
What's just so wonderful, Michele.
This is the best thing to put on a good morning, or night, sitting in your desk writing or drawing, you put up a candle and listen to these good Jazz
I have visited New Orleans a few times and Disneyland 30 something times, this music puts a smile on my face every time. im from ireland been to New Orleans once but that was enough for me to get a taste or the big easy and now i want to go back
Ireland is steeped in a history and culture of its own. i reccomend coming here plus we have some absolutely stunning scenery
OMG I LITERALLY ADORE NEW ORLEANS AND WHOLE IRELAND YOU GUYS ARE SO LUCKY. I LIVE HERE IN GERMANY AND WE HAVE ACTUALLY NO OTHER CULTURE THAN 'KARNEVAL' AND THE OKTOBERFEST
Mr. Magoo Really? And Miami is also one of the places I want to visit. Idk but everything is better than Germany. Germany is also great but there are so many trees. I cannot see trees anymore haha. Where do you want to live exactly? I would recommend you either Hamburg or Cologne. Berlin is not as great as many ppl think and Munich is such a great city but there are a lot of people who discriminate foreigners. Mannheim is also great. I live in Mannheim and this is where a lot of foreign ppl and refugees are. We also have one American quarter it is fron the 2nd world war where the americans were here. :)

There is absolutely no reason this place and its culture should be so beautiful and magnificent, and yet it is, and me and my family are blessed enough to be a part of this wonderful community 🙏

Bend a New Orleans twice for 3 days 4 nights. Jazz, there's no words to explain how truly great it is. I'm getting ready to set up another trip with my wife. This time we're going to get on the paddle boat. We've taken tours of the homes haunted and unhaunted, on and on. But honestly out of all the places I've ever eaten in the world, they can't be beaten in New Orleans no way no how ❣️ love you but you can't beat New Orleans food and jazz 🤗
Well put!
My old dad used to play jazz and blues piano by ear. He 'acquired' radio from a Sunderland flying boat at the end of the war and when I was born in '53, he still had it. This thing was so powerful it picked up the entire eastern seaboard of the US. I was raised on jazz, blues, country, bluegrass and folk! I did my pilgrimage to the US as a callow youth in 1975 and worked for a few months in a fairground in Myrtle Beach before buying a rover ticket on the Greyhound and going to, you guessed it, New Orleans and Nashville. Nashville was a disappointment, but New Orleans was most certainly not and I remember to this day just sitting cross legged on the floor in Preservation Hall, enraptured by these old guys tearing my heart out with every precious note!

Hello Deborah you have quite a gorgeous smile.
I live in Pensacola Fl and for 12 years made the trip to the Big Easy. My reserve unit was on the Westbank, so many weekends in the quarter and beyond. It's another world with the jazz and the smell of Gumbo and cajun food. Nothing like a trip through the French market. Good times.

Whiskey on the rocks is an outrage, it's messing up the original taste. It would be a shame to drink some vintage expensive bottle with anything, even ice mixed into it. For that party mixing, get red label and coke ^_^.
Maybe we need to get together sometimes. I do that exact same thing on a regular basis, however, I sip a Sazorac cocktail. Its main ingredient is rye whiskey. Listen all night long then hop on the streetcar and go home.
Every little while, I hear this kind of jazz in a movie or as a ringtone or alarm, and I like it.

Just to listen, it's fabulous, I have the impression of walking in this town where you can hear playing jazz between the bars in the passages ; imagine the twilight, and the evening starting to slowly fall, and I love that feeling, that would be fantastic. Don't worry no da city is always waiting for ya. Come on over she's alive and kicking to the music. Best place on Earth.
This music started out as a thing called "cacophony" . The brothers would bring their instruments to a funeral and just blast away, the idea was to ward off evil spirits. And over time it became more coherent and morphed into what you hear today.
Thank you for sharing this insight, Mike.

It’s music like this that makes Jazz in general one of my favorite genres in music. I always feel so chill regardless of where it comes from.
