I feel the show has a very concrete thematic arc to the season - namely, that it is folly to care too much about, as we will often fall short of, others' (frequently) unreasonable expectations of us; and that it is instead we who decide who we are, and what we can or can't do. Which I think is the Netflix show being somewhat self-aware, given the IMMENSE expectations placed on them by fans of the original animated series - expectations that were probably never possible to meet and at times even contradictory to one another.

Paku is a powerful master that has only seen war behing a ice wall and only has real experience fighting Firebenders, while Katara is a creative self-apprentice that has experience on a multitude of combat scenarios and has experience fighting all kinds of oponents...
